The Victor Open-Dev might be over, but the fun times with HUMANKIND gameplay are not! In this miniseries let's play we'll be attempting to win with our focus primarily on playing as merchants, expanding out from one central city. War can be expected, as we compete for resources, and as our network grows, we're likely to find competitors in the market. Money is a powerful tool in HUMANKIND, but is it enough to be the most famed people in history? HUMANKIND is being marketed and pitched as a civ-competitor, and it definitely isn't pulling any punches. As far as turn-based 4x empire building games are concerned, HUMANKIND is a viable challenger!

hi, coming from endless space 2, the peaceful victory is quiet a difficulty design mission, afterall not only needs there be more interesting gamplay then just sitting back and turtling, but for MP balance: should a guy sitting in a corner "doing nothing" win the session?, in ES 2 the final meta is that there is no real peaceful playstyle that is competitive if you dont go to war and expand you will be outgrown and the others will just win through economy/science/conquest the closest thing is being part of an allience and roleplay as UN though trading and diplomacy boils down to throwing enough resources at the AI to keep it happy and take your deals, for roleplaying the AIs lack faction based character, they dont make any interesting plans/demands
@Fallenangel_85
@Fallenangel_85 3 жыл бұрын
Since I already played with this exact premise I can say it's totally viable and even really OP. Trade with everyone, buy all resources, have a megacity. Being peaceful is also highly beneficial with this build, since you get more out of it. (because "number of trade routes to capital" modifiers. Btw, terrible starting position for the city, no river and bad FIDS.

I've been watching this develop quite a bit but there's a theme that seems a bit concerning. Making it all about fame turns it into a sort of boardgame where score is more important than telling a story or living in the world. The great writing for events gets overshadowed by this constant need for fame points. And unlike all of the other Amplitude 4X, cooperative play seems non-existent. It doesn't appear allied victories are a thing, so being an asshole is almost always the correct way to play. It's very offputting for someone usually a fan of this genre and this developer.
@Fallenangel_85
@Fallenangel_85 3 жыл бұрын
@@FriendlyFrienby You don't really need to hunt fame, you get it by default if you play decent and to your strengths. And there is a ranking system, so you can still play cooperative. It's really not that bad to be 2nd place. In fact, being nice and peaceful is any easy way to victory, because of how wars and trading works.

16:10 - One of the things a lot of people don't yet know but, if you complete the 10 knowledge curiosities, you get this special legacy perk that persists throughout your entire playthrough. You do NOT get this event unless you have 10 knowledge curiosities. I often stay extremely long in the tribal phase because you can actually grow pops faster than you would after settling, provided that you know what you're doing. There comes a time when there's no more animal sanctuaries nearby to ransack for +1 pop. You can of course disband the hunters when you settle a city so you get a big city immediately or multiple cities even if you do that.

When you choose a culture and advance to the ancient era, your tribes become scouts and can no longer self replicate by finding food. What happens to the excess food that each army is holding? 5/20, 10/20, or even 15/20 food to create the next tribe. Is this food wasted? Does it automatically transfer to the first city founded? Either way, I think micromanaging the food gathering in the Neolithic era to avoid waste and maximize the number of scouts will be incredibly important. Especially because the scouts can be disbanded into population. I believe each population generated by the city costs more food than the last, whereas each tribe in the Neolithic era is a flat 20. I predict that the best strategy would be to avoid waste and be sure to enter the ancient era with 8-10 tribes, then immediately disband all of them into the city except 1 or 2 to keep scouting and building outposts. And since you'd immediately be filling up all your early game worker slots there'd be no need to focus on food growth for some time. All building, culture, tech, and dilemma choices could go to either production or gold and make you an economic powerhouse.

Getting your city up to 4 pop to start a religion is important, but don't underestimate the value of keeping a handful (certainly more than 1 or 2) of units out and about to harass neighbors and claim more territory. It's a delicate balance, for sure.

Do the outposts grant any kind of bonus beyond claiming/controlling regions and exploiting resources? I like the mechanic and feel like it expands options for later decisions. Can't wait for more thorough breakdowns of the mechanics as the game gets closer to release. The gameplay feels much more relaxed than Civilization while still maintaining emphasis on exploration and expansion. Can't wait for this game to release.
@PartyElite
@PartyElite 3 жыл бұрын
It all boils down to 'exploitation' until you attach it to a city (at least as far as I've seen). For example, not only can you exploit resources on land, but you can eventually build harbours when you unlock them. Those harbours can collect production/food for the outpost, but once you attach the outpost to a city, you'll also be able to use that harbour as a spot to recruit units at. I'll definitely be doing some deep dives - the game is upto some cool stuff and I can't wait to explore the full version!

not great imo, they seem to just to stuff "because" a lot of time. Ex: from early in this vid, when they started to ransack. What was the plan there, beside being annoying? Lock up a unite for 7 turns to maybe be able to take that territory, when there's a lot of open land around...

If you are not in a hurry to pick one specific civ you should aim for the scientific star cause it unlocks a event that will give you a civilisation trait for extra food/industry/science per population for the neolithic ear!
@marcuscassin27
@marcuscassin27 3 жыл бұрын
Strategy note for anyone who os reading this: get that 10 science in the super early game, and for your best return, pick the bonus to food. The extra population can be used for, well, almost anything, and there are plenty of districts which get bonuses for population. And also certain relgious bonuses give bonises for population. With that said, to be clear, nothing wrong with mixing it up for RP purposes, or a challenge, or because you have a very specific build in mind. But I just can't imagine anything being more helpful right from the start than food, in the early game and beyond.

Was slightly sad that the OpenDev was over, so happy to see you starting this. I was a little confused by the decision to disband the scouts since they're zero upkeep, unless I misunderstood something? You could always stick them in the center of your city and hit the "station" button so that you don't keep getting prompted to move them. A little extra defense if it becomes necessary, and you still have them if there's a way to upgrade them later on, or a need for some reinforcements later on.

And there are multiple ways to.achieve that. This opens ways for roleplaying or creating your own story of the humanity Still its true that these games are similar in genre and is still in development so we will see what else new can it bring to us

Agreed. It's a common complain and has been voiced several times already. Knowing how close and in-touch Amplitude are with their fanbase (heck, all this OpenDev approach and their Games2gether concept), I am almost sure they will change it if not on launch (since it doesn't affect gameplay mechanics per se, but an important presentation issue nonetheless) then at least in one of the first updates.

This is a very very valid point, and one I'll personally look to bring up to them! I've quite appreciated the way Amplitude has approached these topics a *lot*, and I think they'd be more likely than not to make this tweak as long as they've seen it be brought up. Do they know the name of the Olmecs biggest city though? I thought even Olmec wasn't the name the civilization gave themselves it was something assigned to them in the modern era. Or am I mixing that up late at night?

@guywithdacap4713
@guywithdacap4713 3 жыл бұрын
@@amossutandi Because China never invented an alphabet and used picture style characters instead. The name of this dynasty is originally also written in this character. It´s this one (周朝). Impossible to read for the not chinese speaking world. So, in 1956 chinese scholars invented an latin alphabet based transcription system to ease this problem and build specific rules to read it because in different countries eg. England, France and Germany the latin characters are read differently. But to read and speak chinese in an understandable and correct way these rules were necessary. It´s these rules that make the transcripted zhou into an american "Joe".

Is there a way to change a city's focus in this game? In Civ 5 for example, you can focus your city/citizens more on production or science for example which would give a boost towards the related types of buildings later on in the game.

I feel like the "knowledge star" in the neolithic should be made easier to achieve. In every single gameplay I have seen so far, the player did achieve the other Era stars, while not even coming close to the "knowledge star". 10 curiosities just seems like a really tall order, especially, when hunting and growing kinda go hand in hand and also boost your military strength, while running around collecting science kind of does very little. Maybe 5-7 is a more reasonable number.
@NCanastro
@NCanastro 3 жыл бұрын
I thought the same in the beginning but you can super easily get them, they spawn in unexplored territory so if you have a couple of scouts going circles around your outposts you get plenty. You can easily reach turn 12~15 (when AI starts picking cultures) with 7 to 10 scouts, 2 to 3 outposts (each mammoth gives 20 influence and 20 food) and between 10 to 20 knowledge points. Also another important to notice is that you don't need to find 10 curiosities, each curiosity can give between 1 and 3 knowledge points (check video at 12:10), with 1 curiosity his knowledge went up 3 points.
@noneofyourbusiness3288
@noneofyourbusiness3288 3 жыл бұрын
@@NCanastro ah one curiosity giving multiple points makes a lot more sense. I have not yet played the game, but it does feel like you always want to rush as much growth as possible, which also makes exploration easier (as you said more scouts), but seeing as the neolithic is not as complex yet I can hardly fault the devs for not enabling multiple play-style when you dont even have a culture yet. Especially since it gets rather complex later on. ^^

Does anyone else feel like tech trees are rather pointless in Civ-style games? Why wouldn't you go for every tech in the tree? There's really no benefit to NOT getting everything. I think it's much more interesting to guide your civ through philosophies, civics, and religion rather than researching the wheel or pottery or carpentry over and over again in each game/playthrough? Why not have automatic/random tech advances that happen in the background as you progress through the ages. These advances could be helped along by investing in science, artisans, and crafts.
@valacarno
@valacarno 3 жыл бұрын
I agree that current tech-tree concept feels very stale and out-dated. I liked the base idea of Eurekas in Civ 6 (where play-style in eras determines some of the scientific progress further on), but we can argue on implementation. Let's hope that some great devs (who knows, maybe even Amplitude) will come up with an interesting take on tech-tree and a great realisation of it.
@PartyElite
@PartyElite 3 жыл бұрын
I definitely would like to see gameplay-based tech advances or something in these kinds of games. I wholeheartedly agree about that "why wouldn't I just grab every tech?" mentality. And if not something that reinvents the wheel (hah!) I feel like they could've pushed the culture designations a bit further - militarist cultures can research military tech significantly faster, builder cultures can research building techs significantly faster, for example.
