The states that agree with them signed the UDHR and the ones that didn't agree didn't sign it. Leaders of countries who disregard human rights and go on to commit any of the four gravest crimes go on to have warrants for arrest by the international criminal court.. but then thats where the issue is.. cause no one can actually arrest them in their own country!! Frustrating, really.

@Digdigs2 Easements are a balance of one party's property rights with the freedoms of another (e.g. access to a public road). Only one party "owns" the easement. The other parties just have free licence to "use" it as allowed by law. All the easements I've run across were just part of someone's property with a driveway on it that lead to a property that did not adjoin a public road. The owner of the property not by the road had access to the road w/o "trespassing" on his neighbor's property.

@MerlinYoda ... simply put, the original owner has the right to the book and you have the right to get your money back (since the thief kinda "stole" from you as well when you were sold the book). @Digdigs2 I wouldn't completely disagree about the "waterbording" point ( though I can think of forms of "tourture" that are much worse than "waterbording") and have had some I have some serious concerns about some of the stuff that been passed in the name of "national security" ("Those who trade liberty for security deserve neither..." - Ben Franklin), but I have just as many concerns about people who push what will essentially be government mandated services in the name of "human rights".

Article 2 is heavily damaging for class-based societies, and Article 15 would rapidly generate chaos within geopolitical hegemonies. The rights by themselves are great, but it's very difficult to apply them outside of western culture or the first world overall.

@Digdigs2 Shades of grey of grey do crop up depending on the sub-topic (e.g. Ethics), while something like Metaphysics is going to tend to be more absolute in tone (especially if you're trying to put forth a model of what exists). One thing that should avoid "shades of grey" however are the definition of terms when defining a debate. If there is no line (not even a vague one?) between "right" and "entitlement" then w.r.t. Leibniz's law they're the same thing yet they aren't.
@Butcheredspirit14 жыл бұрын
@bajaninthesun They can draw up rights all they like because these rights only apply to countries who agree to abied by them. They are suggestions for goverments, who can either write it up as national law, (making it a right for all people in that country), or they can ignore it and it doesn't apply. It's your government that (usually) the majority of the people have voted into power, who are deciding your rights.
@MerlinYoda14 жыл бұрын
@Digdigs2 If easements aren't merely lawful license, all involved in them would be subject to any land-based taxation (they aren't to my knowledge, only the *owner* is). Life estate is nothing more than a contract to transfer ownership rights at time of death (specifically to named remainderman). Also "fee simple" does not negate the existence of property rights, just instances in which said rights are infringed on by government in the name of the "common good" (sometimes justly, others not).

A lovely video of the United Nations' Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948, just three years after the end of World War II). Now we in the U.S. struggle with our involvement or lack thereof in Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq, and etc. The UDHR isn't perfect, but what if all the world's governments acknowledged these basic human rights? However, in the preamble, it is put forth as a "common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations" more a goal than a statement of reality.
@Psyckomaster11 жыл бұрын
It's imposes many western values on other people - Democracy, for instance. Engaging in democracy is a choice of the people, and many people feel perfectly fine with the system of government they have at the moment. Things like "everyone has a right to raise a family" prevent people from managing overpopulation, while the right to own property is hopeless for societies that don't utilise it or distribute property among multiple sub-groups (soviet-style communal housing, etc).
@Jayte3215 жыл бұрын
We should strive to achieve the goals set out in the UDHR. We should not stand for any wrong doing by people.

I would have liked to see the emphasis on forming Unions brought out in this video - it's a BIG subject right now and it should be made CLEAR that this Universal Declaration PROHIBITS the denial of Collective Bargaining - ie UNIONS. Article 23 of the Declaration states: " (4) EVERYONE HAS THE RIGHT TO FORM AND JOIN TRADE UNIONS FOR THE PROTECTION OF HIS INTERESTS."
@shamgar00113 жыл бұрын
I have the right to a fair salary? Who get's to decide what's "fair"? What if I am willing to work for less than what someone else considers "fair"? I can expect a decent standard of living? Paid for by whom? Are we going to violate people's right to own property if they don't provide one for me voluntarily? How quickly this switched from "you have the right" to "you must". "You have a right" is freedom of action. "You must" is forcing people to act against their will.

@ArcaneInquisitor Its funny since right now I am reading Dostoyevsky's "The devils" which is largely about the young nihilists and anarchists of the mid 19th century Russia. They had the same ideas of each citizen working with solidarity and independence to create a eutopia of purely free people. They also felt the government only acted to protect the wealthy elite and the people ought to run themselves.

Above all I am doing something I strongly believe in: to help secure safe, clean, reliable and abundant energy for the coming century. What are you doing for future generations?
@NovaWasp14 жыл бұрын
@Nykstukas9 The answer to your question, What is a decent standard of living? and what is a good reason to be jailed? They're found in the individual articles within the declaration of human rights. you can go and look them up if you want just to clarify that they are not illusionary. As for the right to possessions, it prevents anyone taking what belongs to you arbitrarily because the possession has intrinsic worth and value to you. 'No one person should take from another without just cause'.

@Ste0wnz huh? Not making sense here... the bill of rights is no different from any normal law. Also, the US bill of rights is far older than the Human Rights document. Another thing you also seem to miss is that the Human Rights is not a worldwide legally binding document. It's something that each country can choose to follow (which most developed countries have). With that said, I can't see how this relates to your previous statements about seeking refuge in other countries if your persecuted?
