I'm a bit late to the party with Humble pie. I've been a Small Faces fan for over 40 years and ignorantly never bothered to check out Steve's later work and only came to this song and others a few years ago after reading Paolo Hewitt's incredible biography All Too Beautiful which I thoroughly recommend. Achingly beautiful simple song with Steve's voice so mellow and soulful. Boy could he sing and play , the Ukelele never sounder sweeter. What a voice, what a talent , what a loss to music. Brings a tear to the eye. RIP gone but your music endures

It's glaringly apparent that Stevie snorted the Swiss Alps right before he walked on stage. He's fussing with his nose, sweaty, fidgety. Then out comes this gorgeous vocal, and a small, stunning moment in music history. But the second it's over, Steve practically sprints off stage to do another big, fat rail! I wish he was still here, and the way he passed on was so horrific and sad. What a special, unique, musician he was, and an absolute knock-out performer.

Marriott never tried to hide his drug use and this song even mentions it ("What I laid down up my snout". I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if he was high when the fire killed him.

It's a sad ending to a great talent, my dad was fan and he met him a couple of times when he was working near his local when he was in his prime, my dad then saw that he was doing small pub shows around wembley in the 80's to a tiny crowd of people who weren't interested, sad end to a journey of a life.

Beautiful song. Steve still had a great singing voice and was still a great musician. A legend, but so sad seeing him like this. He was always a happy guy, with a beautiful smile. Also this song brings tears to my eyes knowing that he sung Autumn Stone for Jenny Rylance, at the beginning of their beautiful relationship, then this song for her at the end of their marriage. I've been reading "All Too Beautiful", (an excellent read by the way. I don't want it to end). It's sad too that his mom stated that everyone admired her and thought she was so lucky, but she said she was just worried sick about Steve. She remembered seeing him so thin and his face broken out and him being so unhappy. So heartbreaking. I still love Steve Marriott and wish he were still here with us. Gone far too soon.
@cindyfalstrom72314 жыл бұрын
I agree Sandy. What is it about Steve that touches us so deeply. I've noticed that a lot of men feel the same way, too. I believe he was a very complex man, beautiful, talented and troubled. From what I've read, even those he hurt forgave him and still loved him. In his book, Jerry Shirley says it well "he was a handful to love". I wish he had been given more time to get himself together. By the way, a new biography "All or Nothing- The Story of Steve Marriott" will be released in March 2021. You can preorder it on Amazon.

@@cindyfalstrom7231 Oh Cindy, don't even get me started! I could go on and on about Steve Marriott. Even after all this time, I still love the man. I don't know either, what it is or was about him. He sure had alot of charm and was very easy on the eyes and needless to say very talented. I'm happy I found someone who feels the same. And yesss! I just found out a few days ago about the new book. You know I'll be reading it. I can't wait!. I really enjoyed "It's All Too Beautiful". I didn't want it to end. Thanks for letting me know it can be pre-ordered. I'll have to look into it. Even after all this time, I still have to get my Steve Marriott fix. At least once a day, I have to hear him singing or watch a video. @@sandypompilii6901 Wish we could sit down over a cup of tea and have a Marriott talk! Surprisingly, I never heard of Steve until the Covid shutdown in March. Surfing on KZbin, watched a documentary on Sid Barrett (Pink Floyd) and noticed another vid "What ever happened to Steve Marriott" Who? I thought. Then down the rabbit hole !! I was a Humble Pie fan in high school - owned "Smokin", but in those pre MTV days couldn't tell you who the band members were. Here in the US, we weren't familiar with Small Faces and I'm finding no one i know is familiar with H.P. either. Been trying to tell people, but their first reaction is Who? ,Then their eyes glaze over cause they don't care and probably think I'm and obsessed nutjob, LOL! Maybe, being forced into isolation will do that. The only people who share my feelings are these lovely people on YT. I know this isn't the proper place for LONG comments, sorry folks... Sandy, I have read 8 books and countless articles & interviews on this subject. If you would like some recommendations, let me know. Cheers!

@@cindyfalstrom7231 Hi Cindy, , Actually I know I'm obsessed with SM. Yes, I'd appreciate the recommendations. I was going to ask you if you were in the UK or US, but you said, "here in the US". I'm in the US too, PA. You're right alot don't know the Small Faces. They were only here once and the only song that got any air time here was Itchycoo Park. And yes, yes....a cup of tea and some Marriott talk. Are you on Facebook? If so, we could talk on there, instead of boring everyone else on You Tube. One person got really nasty with me one time on You Tube because she was tired of hearing how much I liked him.

I laid all my cards on the table I can give you what you need, now I'm able to Now I tell you how I feel, I hope you come through 'Cause if you're the sea then I'm your rock And if I'm a key then you're my lock Well if you're a foot then I'm your sock, so wear me well Oh go away all alone Don't leave me here, babe, with just this one-way telephone Without you I ain't no big shot Even now looks like I hit the jackpot I just need you, babe, that's my long shot I can sing no more.
