I am allergic to coconut and it’s derivatives. Do you have a suggestion for products to use in makeup.
@HumblebeeAndMe7 ай бұрын
Gosh, that's a bummer, but not impossible to work around! Thankfully the pigments and powders we use and make up are not derived from coconut, so that is very important piece of the puzzle is fine. Silicones and isododecane would also be ok, as well as non-coconut carrier oils. Behenyl alcohol and brassica glycerides could be good alternatives to cetyl/stearic/cetearyl. You could make most of the powder formulations in my book (Make it Up: The Essential Guide to DIY Makeup and Skin Care) without any coconut derived ingredients :)

Hi Marie, I have been interested in formulating for around 10 years now, but am still very much a beginner and only now stumbled upon your channel. Thank you for your blog and these informative videos!! Over the years, I have accumulated many formulating ingredients but lacked the knowledge to actually use them to formulate a cream/lotion. I am wondering if it is possible to create a lotion with all the following ingredients: - vegetable glycerine - sweet almond oil and hemp seed oil - beeswax - xantham gum - a bunch of essential oils I really want to use up the ingredients I currently own and hope to make minimal purchases on the missing ingredients. I am wondering if cetyl alcohol is the missing link? Will I be able to make a lotion with the above ingredients + cetyl alcohol? Or will I require an emulsifying wax as well? (I am also aware I lack a preservative, and am considering Phenoxyethanol or Liquid Germall Plus which are available in my country.) Looking forward to your response, Regards Genevieve
@HumblebeeAndMe2 жыл бұрын
Hi Genevieve! If you want to make lotion, I've shared several different basic beginner formulations. I'm actually in the middle of a series all about natural lotion formulation-I'd start there. kzbin.info/aero/PL4cZgaY9j7fMXbuFZvAv_rL83f23YJjer You will need an emulsifier and a preservative, and for the base formulation the series uses. I also recommend a different humectant so the pH of the product works out every time (though you'll get plenty of use out of glycerin eventually and it has a very long shelf life). You can use the almond oil stead of the Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCT/Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride) I use. As you progress through the series you'll find uses for the gum, essential oils, and other ingredients you might have. Cetyl alcohol is not the missing link, but it is lovely. And as you're watching the series, please please PLEASE always read the partner blog posts as well. There is TONS of extra info in those posts and you will not get the full benefit of the free series if you don't read *and* watch ❤️ Happy making!

If you put cetyl alcohol in you formulation, do you skip the btms 50 or can you use both ?
@HumblebeeAndMe Жыл бұрын
Hi Tony! Cetyl alcohol is a thickener/hardener. BTMS-50 is a conditioning ingredient and emulsifier that will also thicken, but that's not really *why* you'd use it-it's more of an incidental thing. If you use a thickener instead of an emulsifier, your formulation will fail. If you use a thickener instead of a conditioning ingredient, your formulation will suffer. You can definitely use them together; BTMS-50 actually contains cetyl alcohol, so you're technically always using them together :) I highly recommend looking up both ingredients in the free Humblebee & Me DIY Encyclopedia (www.humblebeeandme.com/diy-encyclopedia/) to learn more. Happy making!
