I am coming back to this video now that I have put in some customization. Spent 2 years updating and restoring my 04" Passat 1.8T 5-Speed Wagon. I still have more to do, but I now have the confidence to invest in non-mechanical upgrades. This last year, I've replaced the Non-Monsoon system as it's a GL Model and installed a 7 inch Maxspeedingrods Android Head unit because it has everything a audiophile needs as well as plays movies. With the extra Yellowtop Optima battery and a battery isolator in the rear running true zero and double zero gauge power wire, I am running an Orion XTR750.4 to my current stock components (sounds amazing but it's still 18 y.o.) and I have a CT-SOUNDS 1000.1D ran to a single 10" CT Tropo 2ohm wired to 1 ohm in a proper sized sealed box. I have a dual 12" box as I've learned from the car show scene last year that two 12s look more esthetically pleasing than the single 10" currently. Not to mention, I can take it to stereo competitions since I'm technically pushing a total of 2000 watts RMS and nothing rattles outside at all because of their awesome sound deadening. So now it's time 2 finalise the setup and upgrade/rewire the factory hookups. After all, the wiring is a good 18-19 years old (living in Wisconsin). It's been a fun project. Thankfully, that is the last upgrade I have planned for the interior as I don't wish to shake it to pieces. After that comes uv blocking tint, front mount intercooler, 4 bar fuel reg, catback exhaust, and a tune. Then I will be a happy camper. LoL

Good video! One other thing you can do with the extra circle of sound deadening material: cut it out intact (a full circle) and stick it directly to the outer door skin behind the speaker. It'll help absorb the back wave of the speaker and deaden that panel a little bit. $.02

I just replaced my NB1 Miata door speakers with the M800's from 3rd Millenium. HUGE, MASSIVE improvement in sound quality over the old POS stock Bose speaker units with their weird inverted cones and 0.5-ohm impedance. I used their Miata-specific mounting rings and also their baffles to help keep moisture away from the speakers.

@@HumbleMechanic 13:45 those styrofoam baffles are exactly what 3rd Millenium sells for the Miata. They have you cut out half of the "cup" part so that the back of the speaker cone isn't sealed up but still keeps the rain out, and it won't interfere with the Miata windows.

There is an alternative to using rivnuts or rivets; that would be a HI-LOK fastener. This is a blind bolt with an internal hex on the end of the shank, allowing you to install the nut and counterhold the bolt from the same side. These are used very commonly in commercial aviation, so commonly that sometimes they fall on the floor of the hangar and roll, roll away, they roll so far some of them end up securing the wheel house liners on my Cabrio.

In addition to a foam gasket for the backside of the speaker, I also highly recommend a thick foam ring for the front side of the speaker to fit against the backside of the door panel grill. This really helps direct sound through the grill instead of it bouncing and reverberating in between the door frame and door panel. This made a surprising difference on my Honda Fit, before it got totaled in a hit-and-run.

Great video, but you missed one thing. Your new speaker sits flush against the door carrier but the factory speaker assembly raises the woofer cone 1-2" off of the surface. The factory speaker also comes with that plastic/rubber trumpet ring that bridges the gap between the speaker and door panel. It is important that speakers are not mounted deep inside the door panel so that all of your sound gets into the cabin and not trapped inside the door panel. A popular solution in the car audio world is making spacer rings using MDF. There may also be an off the shelf solution as well.

The sound comes out the front & only a small portion of lower mid frequencies escape into the door , that mid frequencie isnt much sought after lol. Baffles wont project a noticable increase in volume forward, just slightly lesss volume backwards if that makes any sense. Baffles are great imo for anti rattle properties for sure,.

Tweeter install spot on, but there are some issues with the woofer. The OEM speaker has a raised section to push the speaker closer to the door grille - mounting it straight to the panel leaves a big gap, for sound energy will be lost between inner door and door card - better mounting on a ring of MDF or plastic speaker rings Next to the mount points, is there an inner set of mount holes that look to be open to the rear? Water gets everywhere inside VAG doors, The foam splash guard is good, but I would have cut off everything at the bottom that could collect water.

TheRandomMan - Hi you could print them, but you want to add mass and be as stiff as possible plus you won’t see them behind the door card - off the shelf MDF or with less mass plastic rings are really cheap I would just go for them - how about printing a grille for the tweeters? I'd definitely recommend getting a speaker woofer adapter extenders (I don't know the exact term) so that the new aftermarket speakers in the door are extended into the grill openings on the door panels like the OEM speakers did (not sitting flush in the speaker openings). Otherwise the sound is not focused into the door panel grills, but ends up spilling into the door panel cavity and muddles up the sound a little.

Not a bad guide, but a couple of things would make it better. Try to use screws with a lower profile head like countersunk or panhead. Those hex head machine screws might foul on the door trim panel in some cars. Also if the new speakers have screw mounting tabs that are open on the end like those Kickers, try to use larger washers to distribute the tightening force onto the speaker frame, instead of focusing the torque on those tabs. Lastly, even if you don't know how to solder, the stock tweeter harness transplant makes a great starting point for learning how to solder. You can't really mess up catastrophically with just 2 wires which you have plenty of excess to trim off if you screw up the first few tries.

hey, Charles. I just want to add a bit info about coaxial speaker. the tweeter itself won't be distorted since they have built in high pass filter. even if the amp give full spectrum signal, the coax tweeter won't sounds as good either since the position would be much lower compared to the OEM position. the axis itself would result high attenuation since high frequency doesn't spread like low frequency. their dispersion is more narrower hence they should be pointed to the listener's ears (though, a slight off axis might be prefered) so, yeah. if you wanna upgrade, use component speakers whenever it's possible. they're a lot more flexible to install and you're most likely able to achieve better sound stage compared to coax on car application.
@HumbleMechanic
@HumbleMechanic 4 жыл бұрын
100% on the position! For the distortion, maybe I used the wrong word? This am has a built in crossover, so it's only sending low tone to that OEM woofer. I hooked up the 2way speaker and the tweeter worked, but it was AWFUL.
@n.shiina8798
@n.shiina8798 4 жыл бұрын
@@HumbleMechanic it would sounds awful indeed. your amp might output some of the tweeter range. let's say your woofer amp give 20-2k and the coax tweeter works from 1k to 20k, the tweeter output got limited range from 1k to 2k. that's the reason why it sounds awful. you can't hear everything since the signal was limited

Charles, speaker adapter rings are a godsend for aftermarket speakers. They nail two immediate issues you faced, they offer a channel for wiring to come through to the interior and the extra clearance offered means the speakers are offset from the door carrier by around the same degree as the factory units. It also means your foam speaker protectors won’t foul on the window mechanism. I bought a set years ago for an old Merc C220 and they’ve been a perfect fit front and rear in a mk4. And finally while rivnuts are fantastic if you want a different flavour of sound you’re simply unscrewing speakers from the adapter rings rather than the carrier itself. The end result is a bit more OE and some will appreciate that 😉

I have a 2004 VW Passat GL Wagon 1.8T 5-Speed that is now leaving its stock class for the shows I take it to. I plan on replacing the interior Non-Monsoon front and rear components even tho they sound very well still 18 years later being ran by a Orion XTR 750.4. I also have at the moment a single CT Sounds 10" Tropo 2ohm dvc ran down to 1ohm being powered by CT Sounds 1000.1d monoblock amplifier. Because VW takes those extra steps of caution (like riveting the speakers in) I needed to purchase a 500-700amp battery isolator so i have a battery(s) in the back which doesn't affect the front and freak out. It sounds fantastic because VW had done such a tremendous job sound deadening the vehicle i dont have to do much on those terms for when i get a couple of 4ohm dvc 12s to use only when going to competitions. Leaving the 10" in there in between times. Ive still got to upgrade the alternator and purchase 2 AGM batteries to run in parallel in the back but it will be mostly complete for a fantastic summer this year. So really appreciate the walkthru. This here is one of the last big projects of my stereo setup. I also replaced the head unit with a Maxspeedingrods Q96 Android head unit and it is unbelievably helpful in a vehicle like this. Front and rear cameras be installed soon as well. Thanks again for the video.

Good morning my friend, I am a humble engineer from Corinth Greece. I watch you and admire you for the perfection of your knowledge and for your successful diagnoses. Well done, well done, well done. My question is a question that I have been looking for an answer for years now and no one and no bibliography has the answer. Why the impellers on the fans of some cars, have different distances from each other ??. This is the question, I can not give a substantiated answer. Please, if you know the answer, give me at least your opinion. I admire you, George engineer from Corinth Greece. Thanks for being well.

Please note your new speakers are not the correct replacements as the original speakers had raised mounts. since your new ones are mounted flat on the door panel, sound will resonate into your door pad causing cancellation and lower sound reproduction. best raise the new speakers closest to the door pad and finish with foam lining.

I too use my rolly chair for that. I used it to support the sliding door on an Odessey as well. I was going to do speakers in my truck but A) I dont plan to keep it very long. Its a 4x4 w/AT and V6, I'm looking for a 2WD w/MT and I4 that I can lower. This truck is the opposite of what I want. B) I replaced my radio, and wow what a different that made. My next truck will get a speaker upgrade, though, along with the new radio.

So, you probably won't read this comment, I'm planning on upgrading front speakers on my mk4 and I found out that there are actually speaker adapters for mk4, so speakers come a bit out, just like oem speakers, so if anyone is planing on doing this, be careful that your speakers are not too deep or buy adapters which are not really expensive, like 12 dollars. But great video, love your work

great video man! ...not sure if ur miata has the horrible & very much hated 8" door speaker bose amplifier factory stereo system or not, but i would love to see u address the awful "nb" bose system issues... (also, may i highly reccomend hushmatts "wavebreaker" backing pad to go behind any mid bass speakers, helps asorb the 180 outta phase backwave) enjoyed the video, thanx

@@HumbleMechanic ...from my understanding, & i may be wrong, but from what ive learned & read on the forums, if uve got a 8" hole in the door for a speaker & a seperate tweeter (ie; a component set up) up high on the door pannel u probably have the factory bose system... to be 100% sure ud haveta look in behind the radio/hvac center stack, at the very bottom, & see if u spot a very small lil amplifier... pray u dont have that set up if u plan in putting an aftermarket system in it cause it stinks, operates at some wierd ohm, like 0.5 or somethin?, & its a p.i.t.a. to bypass it, so ud be talkin repinning or rewiring ...unfortunately thats what my wife & i's 99 has & it sounds worse than the old am radio in my vintage chevy (haha) ...really enjoy ur videos man, thanx & god bless bro

Put some sound deadener behind the speaker, too. Also, use a FastRing or SoundRings from SoundSkins to direct the sound into the cabin, since the speaker is recessed.

Very nice explanation on the type of speakers to get. I've made a mistake by getting a speaker with an inbuilt tweeter and as you've said, sound will not improve. My car comes with 6 speakers. 2 tweeter at the front dash and 4 door speakers. If I wanted more bass but still want to keep mid and high range sound from for the rear, which speaker type and setup sound I go for?

the way i used to install speakers in VW when working at a shop. more destructive but we used to rip out the OEm speaker leaving the basket, then cut out the back of the basket. then mount the new speaks to the basket using i think it was 3" long screws. The reasoning for this was some speakers would not fit to deep, and customers didnt want to pay for adapters. We would tell them the OEM are trash are you ok and if they agreed, then great if not then we would go you way with a ring to push out the speaker. I did try your way in the past and found the sound travels more in the door i guess because its not pushed up to the grill.

The speakers that come in the R are better that the ones you installed. They just need an amp and a better source unit. They have good potential.

I used this video to fix leaky rear speaker on mk7 golf. Thanks. The slim boom mat worked fine. Things i learned: drilling out rivets was tough, double check the speaker before you reinstall. I just put back in a broken speaker! 😅 Also totally lame VW, there was no caulking left on bottom of speaker.

You can install component speakers on mk4 Golfs and related cars without using the crossover that comes with them? Does it sound good? Also, there are plastic ring adapters you can use to "pull" the speaker away from the door. That way the window won't hit the speaker magnet, and you wont need to pinch the speaker wires between the speaker and the window regulator carrier, since they have a hole on top for the wires to go through. You just need to add some sealant, like you did in the video.

So when speaking on the component speakers that came in the vw monsoon is phenomenal, but you don't need to replace them with components, the Kenwood you have right there is perfectly fine because you can either run another tweeter or just use the mid-range driver tweeter combo by itself.
