Hey Charles I have a question for you. I have a 1996 Toyota Tacoma and has a transfer case seat which is like a tapered peice of rubber that supports the ball of the shifter I tried putting it in without and it seemed fine. Do you think it would be ok to run it like that for a few weeks till the seat comes?

Hey there Charles thanks for the video. I noticed the Sigma SIx kit at DG via your link looks different to the kit you installed. Specifically, the 2 cable ends on yours, versus only 1 on their advertised kit. Plus the design is different. Can you clarify?

That pivot bushing was completely seized in my passat, causing the plastic bracket to snap off. Had to remove selector shaft so I could drill out plastic pin.. was a little intimidating, but everything worked out just fine. Dieselgeek has a video on “shimming the ball socket” inside car, that removed all play on knob after sigma 5 install.

Charles, it looks like you pull the slack on the side to side cable forward towards the end link. Am I seeing things? I thought DG says to push the slack back towards the rear of the car. Am I doing it wrong?

A year late but I'm also confused as it's the opposite of what Dieselgeek says. I keep having problems myself on my OEM Euro shifter as I broke the plastic alignment hole tab inside the cabin like an idiot, so I'm never 100% sure whether I can get it just right. I'll have to test this out myself (both pulling toward the end link and pushing away).

This is the only shifter kit to get for an R32 or really any VW. I had a few others on my R32 before going with the DG. Only pro tip I didn't notice is you don't want to tighten the cable clamps too much. I think DG has in their instructions it should be tight enough where the slot in the clamp will lightly grip a playing card. All these R32 videos are making me want one again!

I've got one of these in my car, Great bit of kit. Agree with you when you say it makes the gear change totally different . It feels much chunkier , quite a bit heavier, and possibly slower to change gears with this in. People often don't comment that although the travel is shorter, the actual effort to change gear is much higher and it to me feels slower. It makes the car feel more mechanical and takes more concentration to engage . It's almost like there's a gated shift feeling , whereas the factory shifter is light and it has that big end weight so the gears self glide into place. Whereas with the diesel geek you have to man handle the gears into each slot . It's different, I wouldn't say it's for everyone like you mentioned in your video, but as I don't drive my car everyday it's nice to have . It did take a lot of fine adjustment over a few weeks to get to a good feel. The adjuster nearest the battery has an incredibly massive effect on the smoothness of the set up. Literally one thread difference (eg 1-2mm) can make the difference between good and undriveable. Also the gearbox feel differs once it's warmed up, so adjusting the diesel geek to perfection takes me hell of a lot of trial and error.

I agree, For me it's perfect. I did want to mention that it will take more effort and remove a little softness of the shift. And you are dead right on the adjustment. Its sensitive as crap AHHA

Ja son - I’m glad you posted this comment. I installed a Sigma 5 on my O2J and thought I had done something wrong. But it looks like I did everything right based on your comment as I’m feeling the same things. I may go back in and try to shorten up the vertical throw a bit more. It’s not much less then stock so I probably need to readjust it. Hopefully if I can find the time at my next service interval (new job, new marriage, etc) to mess with it.

My car is nothing at all special. In fact, most people call it a crap POS. It is a 2003 Peugeot 307 20.HDi, and I love it. It is not standard, as in I have replaced the interior for leather, and replaced the wheels, complete suspension, steering wheel, all bushings (PowerFlex) and had it remapped. It was only a 90Bhp previously, but it is now 125 so a nice increase. I have done things very slowly over 4 years since I bought the car for £350. It is not worth any more than that despite what I have done to it, but it is a forever car for me. It is mechanically sound and very reliable. There was never a sporty version of the 307 (the XSi was not sporty, just a trim level. No extra power or anything over any other trim level) so "performance! bits are few and far between. I am on an extremely tight budget due to health issues, and this car has got to last me a long time as I cannot afford to replace it. I have not spent a lot on it really. One thing I would love is a short shift kit. I am UK based, and there are none that I can find. So, I will pretend that the one you have fitted to your VW is fitted to my lowly Pug, and I ask that you enjoy it for me as well as for yourself :) Love love love your vids, and I am still buzzed about you messaging me on Insta.

More R32 flybys! Kill more dead dinosaurs and turn them into glorious noises. I can listen to that all-day-long. When upgrading my GTI's shifter, I chose to go the 42DD bushing route in the cable ends; no, not a short shifter, but those bushing along w/a stage 1 dogbone mount, really added positive, crisp engagement and removed 'most' (a lot) of the slop; still not racecar, but better. Keep up the good work and I will eagerly await future vidoes where you removed all the nasty paint/clearcoat the PO put on all the plastic pieces (engine cover, airbox, etc) under the hood. Did I mention more flybys at WOT!

Hey I know this video is a little old but I am in dire need of help. I ordered this very kit and installed it, which went extremely well thanks to your video. I have a mk4 vr6 and I enjoy it very much. However, right after I took all of the slack out of the shift cables, and I ran through all the gears while the car was still off-or so I thought. I put everything back together and went out for a test drive. I immediately noticed I didn’t have a 1st or 2nd gear, just 3rd-6th and reverse. So today I tinkered with it some more and now I don’t have reverse, but the rest of the gears. So if you see my sob story by any chance, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks-Aaron

I have heard that some short shift kits need a precise adjustment for cable slack. Too little slack, and the forks are almost shifting the gear and that would cause transmission wear. I have heard it is a common problem among cheap short shift kits in Ford Mustangs. That is why many Ford guys are prepared to pay a much higher price to get a Hurst short shift kit, rather than some generic unit. I'm sure that although the companies that make VW shift kits might not be the same as those who make Ford shift kits, the "You get what you pay for" rule applies to whatever brand you buy.

I bought one of these Dieselgeek short shifter kit for my 2016 GTI (S) and felt it was not as perfect as it could be. IMO the standard one from VW is not very well designed and, of course, the "throw" was ridiculously long. I have never been in a car that has such long distances just to shift. GTI is supposed to be a "sports" car, not a farm tractor. So, I knew I had to make a change. Watching the many videos about short shifter kits, I went with the Dieselgeek unit. As above, I felt it wasn't quite as good as it should be. I had continuing issues with shifting from 2nd to 3rd, into reverse and many times from 3rd to 4th. Dieselgeek said that the issue was probably due to the rubber "rod" that is on the inside of the shifter. However, the video showing the extensive removal off all the parts inside the cabin just to access a $12 part was just too complicated for me to even contemplate. Then I saw how the Deutche Auto Parts completely redesigned the short shifter units from other suppliers. DAP removes the rubber bushings and eliminates the springs attached to the left- and right-hand rods, thus making it far firmer that units which retain those parts. It is important to torque the center bolt correctly. If you overtighten, you risk snapping off the bolt and have to spend $400 just for the part. Labor is difficult as you must get under the car to replace. Second, put the car in reverse before torquing the bolt. Last, you absolutely must use a 5 mm round rod to make the final adjustment (on the inside of the gear shift after you have locked the transmission in neutral. Using a 4 mm drill bit will not do a good job of aligning the gears. After going thru 3 short shifter kits, the DAP is, in my opinion, the best kit of them all. The cost is the same as with the Dieselgeek unit.

A bit off topic, Charles, but I need some advice from a VW Technician. General question about weighted shift knob. First, I hope you are well. I wanted to check with you to see to see your expert opinion. Would a 500 gram (~1.2lb) shift knob be too heavy for a MK5 VW with push down for reverse? I am curious to know if the bushings and spring for reverse could handle that weight without excess wear, or a soon to happen failure. I see stock knob is ~90 grams, and a bfi knob is 200 grams. I’ve seen some full aluminum knobs that I really like, but the weight is double the weight of a bfi knob. Billetworkz sells a 700 gram knob, so there are heavier out there supposedly for VW, but I’m really concerned about excess wear, or if a 500 gram knob would cause the push down to sag automatically. Any thoughts or information is helpful, thank you and I hope you have a good rest of your day.

Hey, great video. Just one quick question, I have a VW Passat b5.5, AVF engine code with a 6 speed manual, i was wandering how hard would it be to put a short shifter kit on mine. I love the drive, and I think it'd be even better with a shorter shift. Also, slightly unrelated, I have this weird problem where it won't go into first unless I'm pretty much stopped, and often I need first even though I'm moving because I live in a city on a hill, so if the traffic is going let's say 10 mph I'd really need first as in second it'd be at around 1k rpm, so not really ideal. Do you have any idea if it's supposed to lock me out of first at that speed and if so, can I modify it so it wouldn't lock me out? Thanks

I cannot for the life of me find a Short shifter kit for my 02J 5 Speed gearbox. I put a MK4 Dashboard in my Mk2 Golf, but because the dashboard isn't as shallow as a MK2 dashboard the shifter hits the dash/center console in 1st, 3rd & 5th. I desperately need a 1.8t GTI 5 speed short shifter.

HumbleMechanic Oh, you're correct, I was under the impression that they didn't fit the early model 1.8t GTIs but it appears that they do. But damn, $180 for a short shifter, it probably would have been cheaper to buy a new Mk2 dashboard haha.

What's the difference between this kind of short shifter install versus shortening the length of the shifter itself, which seems like that's what all "short throw shifter kits" say?

I currently have a B&M short shifter on my VR6 and I'm about to install an APR SS Kit + the cable bracket they offer, as well as new bushings on each end. I'm debating if I should replace the cables themselves. They are 16 years old and this would be the perfect opportunity to do so. Also, is there a torque spec for the bracket bolts? I see the bushings have have been upgraded.

Charles, great vid as ususal, love the channel-- hoping you might be able to provide some expert advice. I'm looking to put a short shifter in my '19 R, and am thinking about the OEM short shifter that your friends at DAP carry. I just checked out their install video and they don't mention having to 'lock' the transmission during the install process. Is that because the shifter cable ends are OEM? By the way I took your advice and got the spare tire kit, which gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling on longer drives; and will be going APR+ stage 1 in the spring. Thanks!

It might not be that easy to demonstrate. The Volkswagen T5 was never sold in the USA because the VW T4/Eurovan wasn't a big seller in the USA. In addition, the T5 might not have been equipped with the same engine(s) found in other Volkswagen models that were sold in the USA. From what I have read, many T5 vans had a 5-cylinder TDI engine, and no VW in the USA ever had a 5-cylinder TDI.

I have this same shirt shifter on my built mk4 VR6 GTI. Im pushing almost 400hp. I have aftermarket motor mounts and it's been about 2 years since I installed the mounts (they are still in great condition) but recently I had the bolts that mount to the transmission housing rip out (literally ripped out the threads) so I beefed up the bolts to 1/2 inch with helicoils after beefing them up once and having them immediately rip out again. now everything is good and holding well. but since I reinstalled everything a few days ago, I can no longer shift into 3rd gear. it worked before I took it apart. now it's like something blocking it. all other gears shift smooth and I tried re adjusting the short throw but it still won't go to 3rd. what do you recommend I try to get that back. I still have my trans lock, and made my own shifter pin that holds tight. am I just not doing it right or could there be internal damage? I feel like I'm not adjusting it properly. my trans lock pin doesn't like to stay locked pushed in. how important is it that it stays in the locked position? I didn't have this much trouble installing it originally a couple years ago. it was easy peasy. I'm praying I'm just an idiot and need to be more persistent. I've only got 112k miles on my car and would hate to have to rebuild the trans already.

Hi Charles I have asked questions in the past you have been so fast at answering much appreciated love all your videos. 1. I to am and installing a diesel geek short throw shifter kit I just wanted to ask about your video because I watched the install video from diesel geek and it appears exactly opposit of what you installed.. your side to side was opposit of his. I need to know who's correct. Or can it work either way? 2. Which cable goes to which one there is a longer and a shorter cable I need to know which of the 2 is the side to side. Thank you in advance I appreciate your time and effort.

I would like to get a DieselGeeks short throw for my MK7 GTI, but for right now, my Forge short throw with billet bushings are working great. Great feel, little notchy, which I like, and great throw length. Only thing I wish it was better at was the side to side movement. For the money though, it’s a great short throw shifter.

Did this mod today and it goes into every gear but when I put it in reverse it acts like I’m in first gear (goes forward) the only thing I wasn’t able to do is lock the trans because I desperately looked for the trans lock under the car and I swear I don’t have one at all.. any insight would be much appreciated!

I have been given another piece of advice. If you have a 1998 or 1999 Beetle or Cabrio, you might have MKIII transmission linkages, but you can replace them with OEM MKIV linkages. There were several other weird mixtures of parts with the 1998, 1999, or 2000 Beetle or Cabrio.

How was the break in/wear in?
@siralexu
@siralexu 6 жыл бұрын
There isnt much to a break in or wear in period since its made out of metal bushings but for the first week it was from what i remember a bit more notchi and unforgiving if you try to shift it fast but soon smoothed out, one thing to keep in mind from my experience its that you have re-adjust the cables after a while i gues from the extra stress put on the from not having dampening of the rubber bushings in the linkage and like yours the shifter braket metal bushings. On a side note as a part of my regular maintanance i clean and re-lube the spherical bearings every 10 or so thousand miles since they are metal on metal from i can see
