Very good point on having a conversation with the customer. Most service writers don't take the time to ask enough questions that can really help a technician with direction.

Documentation=make sure you are punched on the job make sure it is clear you checked for TSB's. Really important, look over the service history of the car. Has the car been in for the same problem before, who worked on it? This getting your own customers can be a problem because it can interfere with a fair dispatch process. Sometimes the degree of difficulty in doing a job method "a" as opposed to method"B" is so small you just have to try both and see what fits you best. Do not give in to the :ribbing" from other guys that insist you do it "their way" By the way. I am the only tech I have ever known to keep a journal, now Charles is the second. About fixing problems that are not problems. Back in about 1986 a bunch of us (including the owner of the Dealership Bib Stillwell) were beating ourselves up because we could not identify and cure what I call a "pulsing hesitation. In other words when cruising you could barely feel the car slightly speed up and slow down. This was on a very expensive 5 series BMW. Turns out the condition is normal,per BMW as they set the mixture this lean.

Man this was good! First, as a consumer, now know not to even think of those general shops. Even more, probably applies to era. For example, you be hard pressed to find a dealer mechanic that can diagnose D-Jetronic. Second, as one that knows more than the average and does everything but transmission rebuilds, learned so much. Now wish had kept a journal since the beginning. Or listened better to those before. Or had an understanding of how a vehical should act when in tip top shape.
