Ashley is a soil scientist who has had a passion for plants since she was a small child. In the long summers as a child, she would garden alongside her grandmother and it was then that she realized her love for greenery. With years of great studying, Ashley had begun her post-secondary education at the University of Saskatchewan.
At first, her second love, animals, was the career path she chose but while doing her undergrad she realized that her education would take her elsewhere. And with that, four years later she graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a bachelor’s degree in science and a major in Soil Science.
Some of Ashley’s interests are KZbin, in which she posts informative videos about plants and gardening. The focus of Ashley’s KZbin channel is to bring science to gardening in a way that is informative but also helpful to others learning to garden. She also talks about the importance of having your own garden and the joys of gardening indoors. Ashley continues to study plants in her free time and hopes to expand her KZbin channel as well as her reach to up-and-coming gardeners.

I now have a theory that a 3 story greenhouse will permit greater circulation. Especially if you have a Walipini base, causing high air flow both in air but more importantly soil. I wish we could start a patron campaign to test new design. I like that humidifier. I also have a personal face mister I use on seedlings.

ghetto tip ....if you have radiators or heating vents ...pots of water placed next to them makes a slight difference too . Its so hard to maintain humidity in winter what with the heat running so much . Very cool vid ! Plants are stupid amazing . I think they actually grow us , not vice versa lol . Stay Bright!

Couldn't you go a step further and place plants growing in water near your heaters? Like a lucky bamboo. Might as well grow another plant in the process, also gives you an excuse to have a pot of water laying around lol

In the Netherlands we used to have those kind of water baskets hanging on the radiators. Seemed to be great spots for legionella.

Most of them are food production plants, tomatoes, a jalapeno plant, a lemon tree and many herbs that I brought in from the greenhouse. I have decorator house plants also which have to be very hardy around me. I love your tropical room, by the way.

I just experienced exactly what you just discussed. I live in S FL and we just had 2 days of mid 40s. I brought in some favorite anthurium for a few days...leaves crumbled up into a tight fist🤢 Roots are fine and leaves grow back but does make it any easier to watch

I am bingeing your channel! Thank you for all the great info. I find my humidifier just shoots the mist up and it doesn't really get around much, so even though it says it will cover a 500 square foot room, it doesn't seem to reach plants two feet away, at least according to hygrometers. Is there a particular humidifier that does this better than most, or what would you recommend?

They are all the same to be honest. Just get one appropriate to the room size so it is not running non stop

Your hair looks lovely here! Lambs Ear is fuzzy. I was fascinated, as a child, when I first touched one. Great info! I know 2 people who could use the information, especially that warmer air holds more water, and they should heat the humid plant rooms. One of them wound up with mold in her brand new bathroom, where she thought it was a good idea to have started plants that needed humidity. Her husband was furious.

How long do you keep your humidifier on for? Do you group your plants together based on humidity or do you just place them anywhere

It will have a setting to adjust it to that humidity and then shut off

you’ll need more air circulation for example by running a (ceiling) fan on low setting. its also important not to overwater your plants. mold usually indicates there has been too much water for too long in the soil.

Man… I’ve only used a humidifier when my kids were sick. I’m in the south and hate hot humid days where you walk outside and the moisture in the air is so thick it just sticks to your body and makes you sweat instantly. I’m really hoping adding a humidifier will help my plants that have basically stopped growing.

Ashley, I tried using a humidifier but quickly run into bacterial and hard water issues. Although the humidifier has a filter and I cleaned it every week, o decided to stop using it because of the hard water deposits. I have budget and environmental concerns about purchasing filters and bottled water for the humidifier. Do you have a better solution?

Unfortunately the only real solution is bottled water or a filter. you maybe able to use snow and see how it works.

It is definitely a balance. But ideally a higher temp hold high humidity which is why people will use cabinets or greenhouses indoors.

60% isn't abnormal and people often have terrariums, indoors grow tents, china cabinets dedicated to plants that need those higher levels.
