Hi Ashley, I love your videos because I have a science degree but it was heavy with chemistry, physics and math at UBC. I started gardening three years ago and have watched dozens of gardening videos but I’m finally learning the soil science and biology that is so woefully lacking in my background. I have high school biology and what I’ve learned from teaching science 8,9, and 10 science courses, but not what I need to grow healthy plants. I’ve made so many mistakes like using container soil to start seedlings that all damped off, fertilizing everything with 10-10-10 fertilizer, planting hostas in full sun. I am very lucky to live in North Delta in the Pacific Northwest in zone 8b where we normally get 93 inches of rain annually. I grew up in Vancouver with a mother who loved to garden but watering was just something we did in summer if it didn’t rain for a few days in a row. I have pages of notes and diagrams now and a much better understanding of plant systems and what they need. Your videos are so very interesting and I particularly appreciate the peer reviewed articles you show on the screen that provides even more detail. You are doing an awesome job, thanks again!!!

Hey, this was so interesting ! I added urea to my compost this year, 1 spoon to 15 liters of water. I had half cardboard, half green material. It did speed up composting. I am demolishing a shed next year and want to grow legumes there. It's about 15sq meters. I'll have about 1 cubic meter of compost. I'm thinking of digging it all into the soil. I loved this so much the geek in me had a real blast. As per usual I have a question. I got really intrigued by converting nitrogen to non bio available form by water logging. Is this the reason why when you overwater a houseplant its old leaves turn yellow? Because it becomes nitrogen deficient?
@GardeningInCanada3 жыл бұрын
That is likely the case. Especially if it’s under prolonged periods of high moisture for more than 2 to 3 days

Love your videos. So much information. I am going to be planting dozens of berry bushes and fruit trees on my property thus spring. I was told about cation exchange in relation to the amount of organic material in the soil. If there is a high level of organic material the more the soil can hold onto nutrients. So by adding lots of organic material to the soil at planting and adding tonnes of nutrient rich compost like soybean meal. You wouldn't have to fertilize again for years in a closed loop system with the leaves fall and breaking down fertilizing its self. Is this the case and could the organic material added be peat moss? Would love to see a video on that science. If there is already one could i get a link please.
@GardeningInCanada3 жыл бұрын
I haven’t done a video on this. However it could work the only issue is peat moss takes a really long time to break down. So you don’t wanna add like a compost or manure

So, do purple plants not contain chlorophyl? We keep hearing chlorophyl is what "makes plants green". So how do pigmented plants process sunlight?
@GardeningInCanada2 жыл бұрын
They do it’s a trick of the light basically
@Runboy74262 жыл бұрын
@@GardeningInCanada What do you mean by "trick of the light"? All of the grow bros claim it is because chlorophyll reflects green wavelengths. I am no scientist but colored plants must also contain chlorophyll so it would be interesting to know where that bro science originated ✌🏻

When are you going to talk about carbohydrates for plants or are you going to talk about that or maybe I missed it I don't know but that's something I want to know about it does that accelerate the rate of growth I don't know I want to ask you that

I got the gist of what you said, but I did get an A in organic chem lab in college, decades ago. I think you would get some much more likes and viewership if you used more graphics while you explain, as it can be hard to hear what you saying, and for those who do not have a bit of chemistry, it would simply be a different language.

My biggest problem and the problem I see with new growers is the over application of nitrogen. You really have to watch it or you'll have dark green leaves and issues.

Is it wrong, that when I see a Mars Hydro Grow tent, I automatically think someone grows cannabis?

That’s really smart. I might actually do that over on the Etsy side. Unfortunately Jeff Bezos won’t let me bundle
