Then how to replace the starter without removing the entire top of the engine. Yes the starter with come out of the bottom. I'll show you how.
Disconnect the battery. Raise the vehicle. Remove the left front tire. Remove the left front wheelhouse.
Then unplug the left front wheel sensor. Remove the starter wires. Remove the knock sensor. Remove the ground cable from the block.
Then loosen the wire harness from the looms for access.
Unbolt the stater mounting bolts. Free the starter front the bell housing. Slide the starter toward the front of the vehicle.
Drop it vertically down in front of the motor mount. Then rotate it as needed, to tilt the starter and remove it backwards under the frame.
Reverse the process as shown in the video.

Thank you so much for this video. Worked like exactly as you stated. Managed to do it with the hummer on jackstands in the driveway. Took about 2 hours. $50 for starter on schamazon, and $0 labor costs. This same job at the dealership would have broken my bank.

100 %, this guy is spot on , it can absolutely be done, just did it to a 2006 h3. A couple things , I cut my metal fender well back to give my hands more room, why not? You have a huge plastic fender well liner that covers it all, a curved cut removing 4 inches of metal made life so much easier. Even though you get the starter bolts loose (2) actually a nut and a bolt, the starter nose fits snugly into the bell housing and mine needed some persuasion with a wedge and pry bar to get it free. The bolt hole bosses actually have a bevel that accepts a thin wedge or cold chisel, go gentle. I thought I could get away without removing the ground bolt and knock sensor, no can do, he is spot on, remove it first. Apply plenty of never seize to the nose of the new stater, bolts, nuts, and electrical connections. I almost considered cutting the fuel lines and adding a piece of hose, and removing the dipstick to go straight in with the new one, but his circle turn up and in route worked just fine. Great video, admits others who say you cant do it this way, yes you can, who wants to remove the whole top of the engine instead? Not me ! Thanks , I added the spare solenoid wire too! Thanks

Troy I cannot thank you enough for this video. You saved me so much time. I have the same color and package of the Hummer in your video. The nut on the backside was the interesting part. I went ahead and ran a test wire too. My dad ran an automotive shop for 42 years and retired about 10 years ago. He was my go to when I had questions and was always telling me how specialty tools from Snap On and Mac saved him time on jobs. It’s great to have guys on here that show instructional videos to help people.

I've done this job several times through the driver wheel well, on the 5 cylinder Hummers. It is hell on your arms and wrists, but I guess it beats hours of top end work just to clear a path. These are very doable from the wheel well. Just do whatever you can to move the wiring harness up and out of the way, maybe take a zip tie and cinch them up. That back starter bolt(nut actually) is a bear to get too, so take it out first, and put it back first, trust me. Most of all, take your time, work a few mins and take a breather, and if you start getting frustrated, stop for a minute. I've done this job 3 times on the same H3, because the aftermarket starters are junk, so be warned.

I have a Chevy Colorado with the 2.8L 4cyl version of this engine. Same engine as the H3, just shorter by one cylinder. I can ASSURE YOU, on the 2.8L 4cyl, the intake manifold has to come off. I tried removing the starter through the wheel well, and there is just no room to wiggle it out with too much non flexible fuel lines blocking the starter. It’s a shockingly horrible design! 😂😂

@@troykane The only info I found online to remove the Alpha starter is to unbolt the front of the driveshaft. I like the hummer H3 T Alpha

It's an 2006 had since 2007. No problems. Just normal stuff brakes, tires etc.

Is there a fix for the anti-theft system? It seems to think it's being stolen and this has led to my starter problems, debating if this can be fixed - if so then I will keep my H3.

It’s your key. If your key is worn out it won’t start correctly and triggers the anti-theft
