I love hummingbirds. I worked at a greenhouse one season after graduating from high school. Hummingbirds would always be comming in to visit their favorite flowers, one or the most asked quesstions by customers was what flowers to plant to attract more humminbirds to their garden. The house i live in now the previous owner was an expert gardner and of course there are plenty of their favorite perennials that will grow in our zone. Every spring and summer there are at least 4 hummingbirds that frequent my yard, there are also plenty of nesting options far enough away for there nests to not be bothered by other birds and wildlife that also frequent the garden spaces. I have been thinking about putting up a hummingbird feeder that was a buit in webcam. Its a good way to be able to enjoy the birds without being disruptive. I enjoyed your video and all the included footage.

I LOVED joining you for this wonderful miracle. We all love hummingbirds !! It is so interesting that they use spider 🕷 webs in the building supplies. She did a great job in building her nest. My friend who was filming a hummingbird nest and babies in her yard found heavy winds knocked the nest down . There were three babies. They had to stretch out the nest a bit because the babies weren’t fitting inside very well. They put in back on the bush and everything was fine and soon the babies flew away. 🦋

In the So Calif high desert, we had a mama hummer come back to build her nest for 4 seasons. Unfortunately she attached it to the chain of a swag lamp on our covered entry. People coming in and out the front door tended to disturb her, so when our activity level increased, we decided to take the lamp down for the subsequent seasons.

@@SheriWatson724 My guess is the mama didn't feel safe with close-up filming and chose not to rebuild close again. I say this from my current experience: I've been observing mama hummingbird from laying her eggs to hatching, now babies are trying to fly (still on nest, perhaps ~ 21 days.) She built it in front of kitchen window while I was out of town, so things were quiet. I approached her nest to see if there were eggs and then babies because of course curiosity got the nest of Me. She became very territorial, chirping and flying furiously outside after I checked her babies up close last time. I don't want her to stress her so I won't be approaching, but my guess is she doesn't trust me.

Where I am on the East coast, we have the ruby throated hummingbirds. Although I've looked but never have seen a nest, I guess I just have to look harder. I have always wanted to see a nest up close... Thank you for the update~I was thinking of correcting a couple of the comments (tongue, hair, ...) One more note, a bird does not have two places for waste to exit the body. They have one place where everything collects called the cloaca. When it is expelled everything in there goes out in one shot.

Those folks will not care, if they don't know that some of the information is not accurate. I would leave both of them up and just not worry about the people who haven't read the updates. @@kimharrington1764 Thank you so much for your feedback! I am not trying to build a following. I made the first video as a project of passion. It is my first film. I filmed for hours, then went to the apple store nearly every day for six weeks to learn to edit (back when they offered these workshops in their stores). I then narrated and added music from my own CD. I wanted to share it with friends, but the file was too large to email, so I posted it on youtube. I never advertised it; the film took off on its own merit. I have never monetized my films, so I don't get any money and I don't care to. That is not why I make these films. The first one was put up on youtube before it was bought out by google, so if you notice, there are no commercials or ads and I think if I were to monetize it, they would add commercials and I don't want that, so I never did. So, I'm not looking for following. I just want to decide if one film will take away from the other. Yesterday, someone who was quite angry at me for filming too close and said how could I not know, and she asked if I deleted all the bad comments because there had to be more (I never deleted any comments unless they were profane) wanted me to take the film (first one) down completely. I do have a concern I mention about her nest location, it is on a stretch of 2 strands of outside lights where the plugs connect and looks off center. Any advice if the nest falls or the babies perch in the cord and fall ? Their are cats that path through my back yard which I hate and I would hate to see the babies fall victim to the cats..

Thank you for this beautiful video! I’m currently filming and watching a Mommy on her nest with two eggs. I’m using a ring camera that is hidden in the bush, but my footage is grainy. How where you able to get such clear footage, and how did you not scare Mommy, or the babies? I’m too scared to film with my camera phone, because I don’t want to frighten her, or disturb her. Hello Lesa. Thank you for your comment. If you watch kzbin.info/www/bejne/nYbCoX1uhaaKrbM this is the original version. I got blasted by some people for filming too close. It is my first film and I didn't really know. I used a canon digital elph camera which was just a tiny consumer camera way back in 2012. It filmed high def. While most people didn't say anything, some "yelled" at me for filming too close because in the original version I actually say that I am filming from only a few inches away. That's why I made this updated version to correct these errors and add new information I learned after making the original version. Still, you should not film the way I did. Either use a long lens or set up a web cam. I hope you will watch the original version. Seems like most people like that one better anyway, even with my mistakes. They think this one is too "clinical" sounding. The first version is my first film and it just has enthusiastic spontaneity. I hope this helps you. Regards, Sheri

Every 2 years a hummingbird Makes it's nest in the same place outside my home but sadly only 2 pairs made it alive as the ones in 2019's Momma passed away and the baby birds fell out of the nest. Now in 2021 a new family of hummingbirds moved into the garden and created a nest in the same place as the old one, and now the hummingbirds are about 24 days old and are doing fine and no wonder I don't see their momma alot.

Thank you for this updated version. I was wondering about the clear liquid squirting from baby 1's mouth, especially as it squirted and, within moments, the baby 2 voided excrement (I had to think for a moment about the phrasing since it isn't what I'd usually say...). In this revised version the squirting is revealed to be the translucent tongue of the first bird. Is that correct? I assume it was a coincidence baby 2 did its business at the same time. I'm left wondering why they void so close to the nest. It seems like they're aware of their aim, so to speak. Maybe it has something to do with warding off predators... What do you think? Oh yes, thanks so much for the add'l information. I'd love to see a time-lapse of the nest being built. Where do you suppose adults sleep at night? I'm going to do some research now.

Hello Haricot. Thank you! I am glad you enjoyed the updated version. Yes, what I referred to as clear liquid is actually the bird's tongue. I think the babies are at least smart enough to do it on the outside of the nest rather than inside. I suppose that is some innate instinct. Hummingbirds go into some kind of hibernation every night and dropped their temperatures really low so they don't need to eat. As I am sure several others have pointed-out, the babies were not born. They hatched. Even though you mention 'hatched,' you also said they were born. Born is past tense for bear, as in carry. The bearing was done when the mother laid the egg, not when the chick hatched from it.

What happens to the daddy humming bird? He doesnt appear to be involved with nest building or sitting on the eggs or feeding the chicks. Are the parent birds around to observe the fledglings leave the nest and to teach them how to look for nectar and how to catch insects?

Hello, the daddy hummingbird is not involved with the nest building or sitting on the eggs or feeding the chicks. Only the Mama will observe the fledglings for a few weeks after and teach them how to find nectar and insects. I learned a lot about the hummingbirds from this website: www.worldofhummingbirds.com

Hi Once they fly they won’t return to Nest ..? I saw since 6 month before a mother bird was in the nest and it have 2 baby’s last 20 to 30 days.. Now they all flew ... They not comeback .. any reason?? How to attract them back to Nest ? Help me

So a hummingbird made a nest on my hibiscus plant. Layed 2 eggs. One morning i found one of the eggs had dropped out of the nest. did the Momma throw out the egg because it was no good? or maybe an accident?

Hello. The hummingbird film was the very first film I ever made, and I had no idea I would even be making a film when I first began photographing the birds. I had to learn to edit to make it, and spent six weeks going to the apple store nearly every day, for hours at a time, to learn to edit the project, add my own narration and music from my own CD. I posted it on youtube only because the file was too large to send to my friends. With no advertising or marketing, so only through its own momentum, my film has over 3 million views. Would you take down your first film if it had 3 million views? I should just take this one down. I had saved it for years; I made this version for a film festival and then only offered it to school teachers for many years. I described the errors below the video in the first version but people don't take the time to read these notes. Earlier this year, I decided to offer the updated version as it corrects the errors.

@@SheriWatson724 i can completely understand why you would keep it then. It was a wonderful first video. I was just curious, i hope that didn't come off as insulting. I showed them to my girlfriend and sent them to my dad who loves his little hummingbirds outside his house. Thanks for the reply.

@@anchorbait6662 Hello. Perfect example of how we cannot read the infection of people's tone when they write. I was not insulted, as it was a reasonable question to ask, but I had a very nasty comment yesterday from someone who told me I should take the first video off completely because I was stupid to film them so close and how could I not know better, etc. She also went on to ask if I deleted all the bad comments because she couldn't understand why there were so many people who praised this film. Now THAT insulted me and I told her so. So, I went to the assumption that your tone was not one of curiosity, but of something more chastising. I appreciate you sharing the film with your girlfriend and Dad. Do let me know your honest opinion of which film you preferred and why, if you are willing. According to the tenets of my religion, the first word revealed by God [if you believe in God] in His most recent and [He says] His Last Revelation to humanity. was the [Arabic language] اقرأ‎ or IQRA (meaning, "READ"). This word was SPOKEN to the man [we call] His Prophet, who was, by all accounts, ILLITERATE; and when he was commanded to "READ", terrified though he was, he naturally demurred, and said "But I can't read". Besides, what was he being commanded to read? There was no book on hand for him to read! Saints and scholars have long pondered that conundrum: when God commanded the Prophet to "READ" What was he bing asked to read: "READ WHAT? WHAT IS IT THAT THE PROPHET WAS BEING COMMANDED TO READ?" A few, more bold scholars have since postulated that the Book that we were being commanded to read, was and is the Universe, God's greatest, most definitive, and the most visible of all His books. I agree and this brief video of yours is, for me, one of the most lyrical and most beautiful anecdotes, passages and paragraphs from God's Great Book. Thank you.
