Same here, it was odd seeing hummers this chill. I'm guessing because it's not a food source and just a chill spot, it's not *quite* as competitive. There's one hummer sitting in the water near the top-left and he hardly moved the entire video 😅

While they’re territorial over their food source, they’re obviously very different with the abundant water source(which they only need for keeping clean), just like most territorial animals, will tolerate others, when they’re at salt licks and/or clay/earth patches which they rely upon for minerals and antitoxins……….

It's interesting that these all appear to be male Allen's Hummingbirds,, which are fiercely territorial and seldom number more than a few individuals in any given area. I'd guess that this location is on a migration route at a time of year when mostly males are migrating, perhaps ahead of the females so that they can establish a territories before the girls arrive... Anyway, it's nice to see them more-or-less getting along when they'd normally be fighting like mad dogs!
@wildwingsla6 жыл бұрын
You are correct, these are all male Allen’s Hummingbirds. When these group-bathing events take place, there seems to be a method to the madness. It always starts with male Allen’s, then at some point male Anna’s move-in and take over, then it’s female Allen’s turn and finally female Anna’s Hummingbirds have a wash. When hummingbirds in this area are bathing in smaller numbers, less segregation (sex and species) takes place. You are also correct that for the most part, Allen’s Hummingbirds are a migratory species of hummingbird. But there is one segment of the population that has always been a resident to the Channel Islands off the coast of Southern California. Now there is another non-migratory group of Allen’s Hummingbirds expanding in the Los Angeles Basin. It is not well understood if this “new” population (about 35 years old) started with the Channel Island birds or if some of the coastal migratory birds simply decided to stay put in the L.A. area. DNA testing is now taking place to determine which is the case. So, to comment to your comment directly, the birds you see in the video are part of the now resident Los Angeles population. They fight all day long around the feeders but apparently are fine with sharing a water resource with each other.
@metacomet20666 жыл бұрын
Really fascinating. Thanks for the information. Very interesting about the hierarchy between species and genders.
@jcmdistockfootage17936 жыл бұрын
Fascinating. I've been watching/feeding/filming/studying the birds here in the Santa Clarita valley (about 22 miles inland) for 20+ years and have noticed that there has been a resident population of Allen's Hummingbirds here for at least the past ten years. Certain identifiable females are here year-round while the population noticeably increases in early spring with new individuals either arriving or just passing through. Interestingly, the "new" males that appear in spring are usually more brown/tan (although they all still have some green) than the winter males. Those which remain in winter have a lot of green on their backs. Since Rufous and Allen's almost certainly interbreed where they overlap, it makes me wonder if the migratory instinct comes from the Rufous genes while the resident tendency comes from the Allen's. Some genetic data would be most interesting. I've also noticed that the birds tend to fight a lot less (even at nectar sources) when there are a LOT of birds present. It appears that when in large numbers it's simply overwhelming and a waste of effort to try and defend the feeder, so they just tolerate each other as best they can. The gender and species-specific grouping I've never observed or even heard of before, although we have nowhere near the number of males (or birds in general) as seen in these pool party videos. I will definitely have to put out a bathing facility and see what happens! Thanks for the great info!
@pcstar1236 жыл бұрын
The feeders probably make it possible for them to become resident population.
@melyndahancock1646 жыл бұрын
JCMegabyte , I saw a documentary once where this 1 species of humming bird was alive ONLY because somewhere deep in the middle of nowhere on their migratory trip someone in some random tiny country puts up tons of feeders. Thousands of birds stop there after a trip across open water. Without that place they would die of starvation. I always remembered that and it brought me joy to see their fragility and strength.

A Chickadee was flying around in my garage with a long string of lint caught in its foot, making it hard for it to fly and also making it exhausted. I carefully covered it with an old bed sheet and removed the lint from its foot. I lifted the bed sheet to release it and it seemed surprised and hesitated for a moment before flying off. It never came back to thank me and also crapped all over my car.

That thing is a perfect bird bath. I'm not shocked they love it. Not deep so they can't drown and it's constantly moving so it won't go stagnant and start growing bacteria.
@LetsDoMath7 жыл бұрын
That was delightful. True about the way they get on generally, so it was amazing to see them congregate at the water source. I plant loads of Monarda just for these little beauties and they can NOT STAND it if another one flies in to the drift. There is plenty to share but they are so territorial over a food source they peep at each other aggressively and there is always a chase-away. So much energy lost in this behaviour when there's so much to be had for all of them from the flowers if they could just get on with sharing.
@i-love-comountains38507 жыл бұрын

Hilarious idea. Love it. I get people knocking and asking for some and I share freely. I have never had any luck propagating by seed - the best way is to dig a bit and off it goes.
@PattyThomas19697 жыл бұрын
You have me Goggling to find the plant so my lil babes can have some! lol
@LetsDoMath7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Patty! I am excited to hear you want to plant it for the hummingbirds. Monarda is also known as bergamot, horsemint and bee balm. It has the square stem of all mint family plants. It's very fragrant, sometimes a bit musky. It comes in a range of colours from Red through dark fuchsia, bright pink all the way to mauve, which is just beautiful. And ALL of it attracts hummingbirds. Mine starts flowering in July and goes through till frost. If you have a local plant exchange or gardeners' group, I bet you can ask for a bit and someone will give it. Like I said, I always like to pass it on. It's a great plant because it clumps nicely, and it is easily controllable because the root system is surprisingly shallow. I'm in Ottawa, and it has never been killed off by the winter cold here. Verdict: tough as old boots! Monarda is beloved by bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. I believe in looking after ALL of them, and I NEVER spray any of my plants (it can get powdery mildew, but it won't affect the flowering, just the foliage), Anything feeding in my garden has to be safe from chemicals. Deadheading individual heads once the florets have gone will encourage more blooms, and if you can stand the look of it, once the killing frost has done its thing the seed heads will be a food source for birds in winter. Chickadees visit it frequently. It is pretty ugly then, but it helps the birds.
