The Tithonia in that location was self-seeded! I almost took it out, but now I'm really glad I didn't. 😀👍

The High Perch feeder is my favorite, too! It's the only one I use. Easy to clean and the hummers like to sit on it. Beautiful flowers! Vermillionaire, Bee Balm, Salvia, Crocosmia, Turtlehead, Zinnias and Lantana are some hummer favorites in our yard. We have a Chilean fire tree or firebush and they love the blooms in the spring. That would be amazing to have 50 plus hummers in your yard. Hello from western WA

Hello ... the Pacific NW is so beautiful! 🤩 We only get that high number of hummingbirds when the fall migration is in full swing. My neighbors also plant for hummingbirds and put out feeders too, so our small area is a great stopping off point for them.

Chrystal I so enjoy your videos and your knowledge of plants that attract and support our pollinators. I live in North East Georgia and I have a huge "Crossvine plant" for the hummingbirds it usually blooms during their Spring Migration and a little during the fall once these brutal humid temperatures drop. I've noticed that the hummingbirds are feeding more these past few days. I hang a feeder for them also, the sugar water is depleting faster and they are more fisty and in combat mode. I noticed that they feed on the Tithona Sunflower and Zinnias. My black&blue saliva & blue sude shoes saliva started to bloom again because the humidity dropped. I think the pollinators ascess different plants depending upon your region. I purchased two "Porter Weed plants" They are not planted in the ground yet. Can I over winter them in my sun room. Or will they be ok if I plant them now and mulch them heavy to protect the crowns of the plants? Please advise me. Thank you!!
@ButterfliesNBirds3 ай бұрын
We are now in Zone 9b, and porterweed will not return for us after a freeze when planted in the ground. Sometimes if we have a light freeze they will come back from the roots. That is why most of mine are in large containers so I can bring them into the garage before a freeze. You should be able to overwinter yours in your sun room. You could also plant them in the ground now and then take cuttings and bring those in for the winter.

I have hummingbirds going to the tips of my pine tree 🎄. Maybe there is a sticky sap. Enjoy your channel.

There very well could be. I also know they like to be in trees so they can observe their surroundings. They like to perch in my trees and swoop down to the flowers, bugs, and feeders. 😊👍🌞

Jealous again! This time it's that fire bush. That is so beautiful! It looks like agastache blooms on a bush. I really wish I could have that fire bush, lol. At least that pretty coral honeysuckle you talked me into is thriving here in 6a Indy!
@ButterfliesNBirds3 ай бұрын
I think it is fantastic the coral honeysuckle is thriving for you up there!!! 😍 You know, we had a very large firebush years ago and I didn't really care for it. (It was before I took gardening seriously). It attracted honey bees, so I didn't really go around it. I also didn't think it had very "pretty" blooms. What a difference a few years can make - lol! Now I absolutely love it because of what it attracts. (When we took out that large firebush years ago, it had hummingbird nests in it and then I regretted removing it.)

Good morning Chrystal🌷🪴I’m patiently waiting for the hummingbird migration. I have that feeder, and I have a purple and red one coming this week! My red Porter weed is hanging in there. My Tithonia seems to be a late bloomer. My first flower came out yesterday.🩷Have a blessed day🩷

Good morning Renae! I am patiently waiting like you are. I suspect you will see the hummingbirds sooner than I will. My red Porterweed (not the dwarf one) has not bloomed in the last couple of weeks either. But my dwarf red porterweed is blooming like crazy. You have a blessed day too! 😊🌼🌞

I love that firebush! I planted one last year, but it didn't make it through winter. I have 3 female hummers right now snacking on tithonia, partridge pea, zinnias, armenian cucumber flowers (its growing on an arch she loves to perch on), salvias, flame acanthus, hyacinth bean, and turks cap. Can't wait for migration!
@ButterfliesNBirds3 ай бұрын
You have a great list of flowering plants for nectar! 😍 The hummingbirds love your yard because of that. So far my firebushes have all come back from winter freezes from the roots each spring. They definitely emerge from the ground later in the spring, but they do come back and by this time are almost as tall or taller than my 6 foot fence.

@@ButterfliesNBirds I finally gave up on my firebush in June when nothing emerged. I always get a little sad when the hummers migrate on. Then I look forward to dark eyed juncos moving in for winter!
@ButterfliesNBirds3 ай бұрын
That is too bad about your firebush! 😢 I agree about being sad when the hummers move on. We have the big fall migration here in early Sept., but we still have hummingbirds come through in much smaller numbers until the beginning of November. (The juveniles are the last ones to migrate). I am just like you too ... I get so excited when we have the American Goldfinches arrive for a couple of months in the winter!

The firebush with the orange flowers and smaller leaves is usually Hamelia patens var Compacta a variety from... South America I think. The larger leaves with redder flowers is the native, at least here in Florida. There's a pretty big contention between using the two amongst Florida Native Plant advocates (not me, I have both). I think they're concerned with the two cross-breeding.
@ButterfliesNBirds2 ай бұрын
If I have a choice, I usually try to purchase native plants. I planted the smaller leaf Firebush early in my gardening journey and I picked it up from Lowe's. My other firebushes (larger leaf) I have purchased from two different local nurseries. Thank you for the additional information! 👍😊

How large are your large containers? And let plant or small tree type might entice the birds to hang out in in my yard. I am working with a small space and mostly very sunny. And everything is in containers.
@ButterfliesNBirds3 ай бұрын
The large containers are 19 inches in diameter across the top. They are a very good size for plants that need some space.

Thank you for sharing. I've been adding plants to hopefully attract hummingbirds. Is your Torenia in full sun? I am trying to find a heat loving plant for my window box that is in full east sun.
@ButterfliesNBirds3 ай бұрын
Yes, my torenia (wishbone flower) is in full morning sun. It doesn't get shade until around 2 in the afternoon from our house. Torenia would be a great plant for your east facing windowbox. It does well in the high heat and humidity. They do need regular watering though.
@slr41723 ай бұрын
@@ButterfliesNBirds Thank you for the reply. Anxious to try it. I had black footed daisy in my window box but it became too leggy.
@ButterfliesNBirds3 ай бұрын
That is the nice thing about torenia - it is both a spiller and a filler in a container. It doesn't get leggy like other plants can. (It trails, but it also grows into a small mound). 😊 The Proven Winners torenia grows better for me and they are a little hardier than the regular varieties that I have found in nurseries. I usually don't have much luck with Proven Winners plants in our high heat and high humidity, but I do prefer them for torenia!

@ButterfliesNBirds3 ай бұрын
All of my porterweed are in pots except for the dwarf red porterweed that I planted in my new garden bed. All are just huge (they love this climate). I was surprised with how large the dwarf one got though ... it loves its life in the full sun! lol.

@@ButterfliesNBirds do you cut them back before you move them into the garage for winter or do you leave it as is? I'm just starting out with my pollinator garden and I'm so excited to have found your channel (I'm on the northside of Houston)
@ButterfliesNBirds3 ай бұрын
Hello neighbor! I take my porterweed in "as is" because usually after the freezing event I will take them back out. When it warms up a little mine will usually flower. And the pollinators don't have many options after a freeze here. It is amazing that I will even see butterflies in January down here in mild winters.
