Time, time, what is time. The Swiss manufacture it. The French hoard? it. Italians squander it. Americans say it's money. Hindus say it does not exist. I say time is a crook. Bogart's films always have memorable lines even if he doesn't say them. Thanks for this. I love all Bogart's movies. This one has a really great cast. I remember adoring Gina when I was just a teenager even though she was already well into her 30's and double my age. 🥰

Peter Lorre held great respect in America. So great that when his daughter was kidnapped in Hollywood by gangsters for a ransom , on finding out who her father was , they released her immediately.... He's one of my most favourite actors.....

Released in the USA in 1954. A terrific classic film, it would have benefited by color film, but otherwise very entertaining. Great to see Bogie in fine form. A great cast in a very European style film by the great John Huston, who like Hitchcock makes a clever cameo appearance as a passerby waving to Bogie on a balcony. The film reminds me of Fellini in its flair and ambience.
@MsZeeZed4 ай бұрын
@@TheDejael that ambience is partly Ravello & the Villa Cimbrone renovated by Earnest Beckett 2nd Baron Lord Grimthorpe, inherited by his daughter the philosopher LC Beckett, part of which she later sold to Gore Vidal. Its C20th is entwined with the Bloomsbury Group and Hollywood as an Italian retreat.

Fun little movie for those who wanted more international capers like Maltese Falcon etc. There’s a small problem identifying a “hero” here, what the hell let’s say it’s Bogart as he’s not a cold blooded killer or complete maniac here unlike practically everyone else!

@DonaldPBorchersOG Saw this back in 1985, ended up becoming one of me & wife's all-time favorite films. A fantastic John Huston masterpiece that hardly ever gets the love it deserves. I feel it's right up there with THE MALTESE FALCON and NIGHT OF THE IGUANA, but it's subtler & more jaundiced than both those films combined 😂👏 Gina gets more radiant with every viewing & it's probably her best performance I can think of. The camera work is seemless. It's hard to believe this film WASN'T appreciated when it originally came out. The cast is PHENOMENAL & note-perfect for It's day. Kinda blows my mind that history considers it a flop... 🤯🤦♂️🤷♂️ ...but I LOVE it! 😎👍🎬

For those who are slitghtly dense, like me, and who need this said, this is very obviously a comedy, from the word go, so it's way over the top right from the start. So don't judge it harshly, like I did at first. The only problem is that I am sure I've seen it in color 2 or 3 times, probably technicolor! So where is the color? Maybe there are missing bits too. Television stations used to chop more and more out every time a movie was shown, to make room for more ads. It's well worth watching anyway though. Very funny.

Engaging plot. Well directed and acted. As for writing I have a few complaints. Too much of that ship captain's yelling; they should have cut 90% of that. And the scenes in Africa were weak. I think they could have cut that part out. All and all, a pretty good movie.
