I like investing in close-end funds that pay monthly dividends. The trick is to hold long term and reinvest the monthly dividends plus buy more shares on a monthly basis or when ever you can afford to. This can be easily done because close-end funds are bought and sold on the stock market just like regular stock. That’d be enough to create a portfolio that would pay you between $50k to $70k in dividend income

My advice to everyone is this : if you want to grow big this year especially in your finances. Be willing to make investments. Saving is great but investing puts you on a pedestal where you wouldnt have to worry about savings as you do now. Thanks to my FA, my portolio is doing really great and im proud of the decisions i made last year.

Nice. People often underestimate financial advisors' importance. Over 50 years of data reveal that those who work with advisors typically earn more than those who go it alone. I've been fortunate to work with one for 13 years, resulting in a $1 million portfolio, largely from early investments in AI and other growth stocks..

My portfolio for the past 30 years has always been self managed and I own 3 shares of Berkshire Hathaway Class A stock (BRK:A) which I bought in at about $17,000 during the mid 90s, I'm currently liquidating some of these positions to incoporate new Gen. Investing in a Roth IRA can be a good choice since they are funded with after-tax dollars, and your contributions can grow tax-free over time. Dividends are a great thing, but they’re only really effective for passive income when you either have somewheres over 20 to 25 thousand shares of a high yielding stock. Meaning you likely need to have a few hundred thousand if not more invested in it. Re-investing dividends back into the same stock certainly does snowball with compound interest, but you only really start seeing it after 20 years of never stopping and likely needing to add additional money of your own with it….so it’ll be time consuming and costly. The way I see it if you have a million dollars at some point, that’d be enough to create a portfolio that would pay you between 50 to 70 thousand in dividend income

Yeah they shouldn't have the average. The concept you are conveying is the percentile not the average. The median (50%ile) was given in the video, but even that is not expected, as the Midwest income is more like the 30-50%ile (with parts of the south at the bottom, and the northeast/cali at the top). Also people's experiences are not very generalizable as most people live in isolated income/wealth bubbles.

Time is another factor with dividend income and yields. I bought 1000 shares of BAC in 2008 during the Great Recession at $8/share. At the time, BAC stopped their dividend payouts. When they started the payouts again, it was only $0.01/share, then $0.05/share, and now $0.88/share/year for a 2.58% yield based on a price of $34.16/share. But because I bought 1000 shares at $8/share, my actual yield is $0.88/$8.00 = 11% My actual yield will increase over the years if/when BAC raises their dividend. And they will likely do so if the stock price increases. Point is, start dividend investing early by buying growth stocks that pays a dividend and let time grow your stock price and dividend yield.

People often don't realise this but since dividend yield grows yearly and so does stock value (in optimal scenario) you don't really need to save 1.5 million dollars to get that 5% yield to get 75000 dollars per year. It helps to start investing early though. However since the dividend yield can also go backwards (and the stock value), there's no guarantee in any case this plan works.

Why no mention of covered call ETFs? Or MLPs? JEPI pays 8% while still growing with reduced volatility and has still been reliable during a bear market. I wouldn't use QYLD because of the return of capital issue, but JEPI pays out a combination of ROC, qualified and unqualified dividends. I wouldn't put my entire net worth into it, but I would feel pretty confident putting a chunk in it.

Humphrey I am a new subscriber to your channel and very happy to have come across your 2nd posting. Excellent topics covered. I have a large percentage of SCHD and other dividend ETFs in my IRA (rather than individual stocks as you mentioned in your video since my job requires stock clearance etc.), to avoid any taxes until RMD kicks in at a lower tax rate, also doing the same maximizing my 401 to the limit to take advantage of the amount one can contribute to a ROTH as well as enrolling in a HSA (triple tax) again to further add to my ROTH portfolio. In my taxable I have over 100 lots of BRK.B since it doesn’t payout any dividends or capital gains until one sells, while building on growth as a value stock and mitigating taxes at year end.

I have challenged myself to put away 50% of my monthly income into stock options which is quite easy since I live frugal without debt. I work as an account executive, and make over $20000. $10000 goes into dividends, and the other $10000 covers my my food plus living expenses. I am seeing improvements in my portfolio, dividends look certain, but I have to attribute this to only to guidance of a licensed fund manager who allocates funds to a plethora of assets. I have to stay disciplined, and remember that I’m in it for the long term. Good luck to everyone and thanks for the great video.

One thing not mentioned about Roth IRAs is that contribution limits kick in if your MAGI exceeds $139.5K as a single filer or $219K for joint filers. This likely only applies to a smaller slice of income earners, but something that isn’t mentioned often about Roths.

@@EDDYWARDOftw Yes, that is true, however you will pay taxes on withdrawals during the conversion/rollover to a Roth, whether it’s done incrementally over a span of years or all at once. I think it really depends. The best time to buy dividend stocks is when there is a market downturn. I’ve seen some stocks pay 20% yields. Now there is a risk they will pause the dividend if there is a recession but if you can hold it for the long it might pay off when they start paying dividends again to historic distributions.

The one thing to add is that what's probably more important than the dividend yield at any point in time is your personal yield _on cost_, which is the yield for the average cost you bought a stock at. If your average cost doesn't change too much, that number will only go up if the company keeps raising their dividend.

I need to look into why taxes have flat barriers and they aren’t on a gradual scale. I feel like we could easily do that now a days so if you make a bit over 40,000 you instantly get 15% taxed and make less than you did if you just made under 40,000 seems like a silly. I feel like it should begin small and scale up to 15% over 25% of the previous number. So it would slowly scale up across 40k-50k from 0-15% then 445k-556k from 15-20%. It would incentivize people to put more towards their capital gains even if it’s over 40k in returns. Idk it just seem like the bump to 15 from 0 is a lot.

I find this annoying that it’s not even brought up in the video but it’s immensely important. An example is I bought Abbie vie for about 70 a share and it was yielding 6%. A few years later that initial investment is now yielding 7.5% not including the money I made in dividend reinvestment. He’s treating the initial investment yield as static, which is very wrong. Investing in a diversified dividend ETF is great. What starts out as an initial say 3.25% yield could grow in let’s say in ten years you’re now reaping 7 or 8% yield l, which is INSANE. You basically are getting a great guaranteed return without ever touching your growing principle. I would argue that dividend investing needs to be a greater share of a young persons portfolio along with growth stocks.

Roth IRA you pay taxes beforehand. Traditional IRA you pay taxes after. I think it all depends on what tax bracket you expect to be in after retirement. So I am because I would like an answer from someone who understands these things without thought of personal gain. Thanks.

Love the video, I am moving into dividends now, but I noticed you stated one can only contribute $6k to a Roth. For 2023, it is $6500 for those under 50

As an investing enthusiast, I often wonder how top level investors are able to become millionaires off investing. I do have about $70k amount of capital to start up but I have no idea what strategies and direction I need to approach to help me make decent returns

15K shares Altria (MO) today -> 45-50K shares in 14 years. $3.76 dividend today-> $6.50-$7 in 14 years. That’s a range of $300-$350K with current assumptions that mirror the past 2-3 year performance. I should be able to live off just my Altria dividends by then.

Thoughts on higher risk dividends? USOI has a 25% return rate. I also have some call option dividend stock with an 8-10% return. it won't last forever so I'm minimizing drip and reinvesting the dividend in a index fund

There are a lot of dividend companies in the SP 500, Dow and Nasdaq. In other countries you don't have that much option. US has the biggest financial market.

Wouldn't it be ideal to aim for higher dividend portfolio that yields let's say 11 to 15% then later and slowly move them over to less riskier dividend stocks as you get older? :-)

Isn't the median number more important than the average number which takes into account all the young and old billionaires and multi multi millionaires which make up the tiny 1% and below? We think "average" would be the focus, but really shouldn't be. Most Americans are broke living paycheck to paycheck with little savings, and a reliance on loans, financing and credit cards to get through life paying off debt. The percentages of networth across the country by majority, taking into the considerations of any and all liabilities, is more more important I would think.

It really doesn't make sense to say "how much do you want to live off of" unless it's like a 5, 10 year max time frame. Retirement is potentially 30+ years and with 3% inflation that's going to decimate the standard of living for a fixed income. All your calculations should be inflation adjusted

when you say "it is better to hold growth equity when young, and better to hold consistent dividends when you are older", do you think this implies that dividend stocks will see a crash, or at least a downturn, as the wealthier boomers age and pass on? as in, if boomers hold a disproportionate amount of overall wealth, and their money is held disproportionately in dividend stocks, will we see a huge shift where younger generations inherit those portfolios of their older parents and we see a large liquidation of dividend stocks which would disproportionately be reinvested into growth equities because that wealth would now be held by younger people who will still want the benefits of longer growth over time with more volatile growth stocks.

just sold a property in Portland and I'm thinking to put the cash in stocks, I know everyone is saying its ripe enough, but Is this a good time to buy stocks? How long until a full recovery? How are other people in the same market raking in over $200k gains with months, I'm really just confused at this point.
