Canadian here - car components travel between Canada, US and Mexico multiple times during a build and each time could incur a tariff. 9:25 Ford produces a lot of vehicles in Mexico. Many auto supply chains also extend outside the US. Tesla has the most American made vehicles and would be the least impacted and even their vehicles are 70-75% US based supply chains, leaving some portion of costs that would be increased by tariffs.

I'm about your age Humphrey. Crypto, Apple, Microsoft, and Tesla stock really took off for me recently. I took some "just in case of a down turn/crash" profits and am going to use those to DCA into stuff that will help give me passive income. So i've been studying ETFs that do weekly or monthly dividends. My career is freelance so having some passive income will be helpful for me during times when i don't have work (i make a lot when i am working but once a gig is over i don't know if i'll be unemployed for a week or a year 💀). So it's been a goal of mine to build up a position in things that can effectively cut my rent in half (or cover it entirely), passively. So i can weather those non-working months without worry, or drastically less worry.

It certainly will. No one knows what Trumps angle ever is, that's his tactic. It's all egotistical posturing as he's always done. Threatening the tariff on Canada and Mexico is all smoke and mirrors from some other ridiculous idea he has. Good luck trying to figure it out. Sticking to your fundamentals that you've developed over the years of investing is all you really have control over. I understand the need to rely less on China for manufacturing just like when he was in office last time, but it's not an overnight flick of the switch solution. Just like the whole electric cars phenomenon. Sounds good in theory but it's not feasible in short term for transitioning into.

Curious what everyone’s thoughts on AMD’s stock and poor return for 2024? I just bought some at it’s recent low and think it’ll do much better next year but curious what other people have to say.
@PeterLowe17 күн бұрын
AMD just doesn't have a large market share of consumer CPUs or server CPUs, and is eclipsed by Nvidia for GPUs, so people speculate slow growth. If they capitalize on Intel's problems, they are likely to gain more market share, but even though Intel has problems, they dominate in consumer and server computers which doesn't seem likely to change next year. AI growth will likely slow next year, and overall, AMD just doesn't have disruptive tech on the horizon that could send their stock surging. So I think it'll have some gains, but not explosive growth like Nvidia.

@EtamirTheDemiDeer we currently have tarrifs under the current administration, but to me more importantly than prices is bringing back jobs to this country. Relying on a country that has a very bad relationship with us to give us many of our goods isn't a smart idea.

Unless something has changed recently, Ford Motors imports most of their parts from Mexico and assembles the car in the USA. All of those individual parts like your alternator would be hit by the 25% tariff unless there was some kind of exclusion made for them. That means a $80,000 truck may cost $100,000 after the tariffs.

Good - ford needs to go under. No one wants their recall laden over priced junk trucks.
@joshledford46157 күн бұрын
The amount the tariff is paid by the company or the consumer will be dependent on each individual good's elasticity of demand. If the particular good has a high elasticity of demand (e.g. insulin) the consumer will pay most or all of the tariff in the form of higher price. If the good has low price elasticity (e.g. chewing gum) the company will have to pay it. Each individual good has an elasticity along a spectrum that determines how much is paid by the consumer or company.

@HarfelJ6 күн бұрын
@jonathanjoestar176 I know about capital gain taxes. However, other than selling assets at a loss to offset gains, I don't know of a way to avoid paying them. Assuming that I'm right, what I'm wondering is if there is a more advantageous result of selling assets than coming out of it with capital gains.

A simple rubric: The capture of the government by the billionaire class means that assets will be bid up massively by deficit spending. Deficit spending is the extortion of capital from the people by the wealthy. They don't pay taxes on their wealth but lend it back to us. Meanwhile snapping up assets from the middle class who now have to layer on debt. IOW more money paid to billionaires to be able to just stay afloat.

Looking at how the market does DURING a President's administration is not accurate... when most of the effects happen over the next 1-10 years after they leave office. For example, Biden is very anti-oil but energy stocks have done well under his term. Why ? Because these oil companies signed 10 year land leases under Trump. Democrats would bankrupt these companies if they could but during Trump's first term, he insured that couldnt happen.
