My hard-won-over 84 year old mother watched this lecture today, and she nodded the whole time! She finally faced facts, and realized that the food I cook is the right food for her;) Last October when she had her TIA, she buckled down and got with the program, and she sees with the benefit of hindsight that the McDougall way is the right way.

I've experienced hyperphagia. It was when I had been eating a junk food diet, and switched to starchy whole foods. I could eat a pound (1600 calories) of pasta four times a day! And I did! After a couple weeks, that extreme hunger went away, after I assume my body had absorbed from the nutrient dense plant foods, the nutrients it was being denied on my previous way of eating.

This was an amazing presentation. Losing weight without hunger is the holy grail. I did a weigh and measure program, which worked for a while, but then when I got off it my hunger was insatiable. I’m sticking with this from now on (already started and lost a couple pounds!)

Aaah i fell asleep and missed the live. When i first heard him said we should eat starch+fruits & veggies to be healthy, i’m in his camp straight away. I never weighed above 55kg when i ate a whole lot of rice with some veggies & a small piece of meat. When my mom put me on a diet and cut my rice consumption by 70% but increase my meat intake, it left me hungry and i could never bring my weight down.

GREAT presentation. However I think there was one misrepresentation. Doug (who was on Chef AJ's show a couple of months ago) did not participate in the olympics as an athlete, he was "only" a volunteer helping the organisers. Furthermore his diet was more "refined" than just being starch based; he took calorie density in to full account (as per Chef AJ learns us) AND HE COUNTED CALORIES in a rather extreme way to achieve his huge success!!!

When I switched from a Keto/Paleo diet (which caused a 25 pound weight gain in 2023) to Dr. McDougall’s , I overate on his diet for about two weeks. Then my hunger dropped significantly. So hang on. Btw, I wasted 19 years in a restrictive 12 step food plan program and was food obsessed and hungry the whole time. Turns out it was the food all along.

Unfortunately, for so many of us food addicts-our hunger is not physiological. We have an emptiness we try to fill or medicate our emotional/mental emptiness and/or physical pain with food. As long as we have no alternative coping mechanisms and self-medicate with food, we will struggle with our weight (even if we are vegans). I’m much healthier physically binging on beans, veggies and fruits than salt/sugar/oils, but I’m still overweight.

Thanks. I found out on the internet that I can get omega 3 fatty acids from nori and wakame. I gave up bread and feel so much better. I used to retain water eating wheat bread. Thinking of adding steel cut oatmeal to my food. I will be willing to do an experiment with starch and see.No dairy including butter and no added sugar. No dried fruit or fruit juice. I have trouble sustaining a low carb diet with olive fat and eggs/ fish bc although I was satiated. I would be hungry 4-5 hours later but I could not bare to eat more fiber as non starchy salad vegetables and eat protein again. I'm concerned about taxing kidney with more animal protein again. I grabbed hummus with. crackers so I need some starch.

There is an ‘all in’ movement and this study is often talked about. Many are ending the diet cycle and eating whatever they want. Going through extreme hunger but many’s experience is it levels out after time. Different for everyone and then they become a normal eater and person. Not so obsessed w food etc. but they have to let go and trust the process. Gain the weight and let it go. They aren’t doing it with the starch solution way but that would be interesting.

Chad, try giving up butter and oil, but replace it with avocado and walnuts. You'll 1) eat the food, 2) not feel deprived, 3) be healthier since butter and oil are terrible for you, and 4) be able to more easily moderate yourself towards a lower fat diet since whole fatty plants are not nearly as addictive as pure fats are.
