What stands out to me is how Joe is continuing to enable and actually harm Hunter. Addiction is never "cured" or "beat" - it's a lifelong process of doing the steps of recovery daily. Joe's letting Hunter skate and avoid consequences is an invitation for him to just keep using. He might stay straight for awhile... but skipping the key step of making tangible amends and doing the time means it won't last. The easy way out isn't sustainable for an addict.
