At least with the Winchester, it preformed as printed on the box. This is marketed as a self defense round against human threats. The penetration and expansion was just right. The velocity was perfect for this projectile, any faster and you increase the chances of pass through. If you're hunting large animals, you need something else.

@@randyduncan795 I probably worded that wrong. Not that I have anything against 10mm, but I just don’t see the need to buy one when I’ve got the other two calibers. I'm sure there's probably reasons for ithe 10 mm underperforming , one some projectiles probably can't hold up to 10 mm speeds and two some pistols probably won't be able to hold up to that velocity either just like the 45 Long Colt or 45-70 those two have the potential to be chambered in weaker firearms

Be good for defense against 2 legged critters. The Hunter may not do well against a bear or large hog - shield on shoulder is tough - so I think it's misnamed. Hornady also had a very different approach to bullets and cartridges compared to someone like Buffalo Bore. Buffalo Bore sets out to make the most powerful cartridge they can in a given caliber. Hornady, on the other hand, sets out with a specific performance envelope they want for a line and then develop each cartridge to match said envelope. If you use their critical duty, it will have almost identical penetration depth and expansion percentages regardless of if you shoot 9mm, .40S&W, 10mm, .357 mag, et al. The same is true of their Critical Defense line. I wouldn’t be surprised if they purposefully designed that 10mm to provide the same performance that their .40S&W, 9mm, and .357 mag loads provide.

These copper expanding projectiles are becoming harder and harder to overlook! Great expansion every time and even against bone in actual shootings. Love me some lead HST's but copper expanding projectiles may be the better choice from a terminal performance perspective. The Winchester didn't do too bad either. When I shoot my Glock 20/ 10mm I expect a 180 gr. Bullet to move at 1450 fps, not .40 cal. Volicity speeds. The same as shooting a .38 spl. And a .357 mag. Power is the difference in performance.
@upperroomtoo
@upperroomtoo Жыл бұрын
I know you always get frustrated with the light weight copper bullets in every caliber because of poor velocity, but you have to remember they generate much higher pressures. Look at the length of the bearing surface on that 135gr and then realize it doesn't compress in the barrel as easy as lead. The Hornady handloading manual shows most handgun copper projectiles with powder loads 20-30% lighter than JHP bullets that are significantly heavier.

A terrific test, as always, from Tools !! I would have no hesitation about carrying either of these with summer weather being here, and the average two legged predator not wearing a heavy jacket and shirts. But I'm extra impressed with that Hornady copper projectile. I'm sure that it's going to be very painful for an attacker, when the surgeon tries to remove 2 or possibly 3 of those massive, gnarly edged things ! (Assuming that the guy that tried to murder you actually survives those giant holes.) Since it would have been terrific performance for a 40, it's going to be devastating whether considered a powerful 40, or slightly less powerful 10mm. Personal opinion, of course. I'd much rather carry a 40 or 10mm for defense than anything else. A very wide going deep! To me the ideal option compared to 9mm or even 45, as I'd be using a compact rather than full size. I might try alternating the Hornady with the Winchester Ready in my magazines.

Interesting test Tools. While the gel performance was decent, I'm disappointed in the velocity for a 10mm. When you consider some will try to carry a 10mm for self-defense while hiking in the wilderness, I'm not sure they could protect you when it comes to 4 legged predators. They are just a glorified 40S&W. Need more speed, but then this has been the problem with the 10mm, under performance for what it was designed to be. Be vigilant and always be safe my friend.

If your desired 10mm performance is directed towards defense from large carnivores many of the current offerings do fall short of the typical 41 (or 44?) Magnum levels. In this regard the specialty 10mm loads (Underwood, Buffalo Bore, etc.) OR possibly some hardcast handloads can fit the bill... But, for any 2 legged predators the performance of these two tested loads is hard to fault, IMHO. P.S. When compared to some quality 40 S&W ammo (that's often equally as effective?) they might even be termed as "overkill"?

Given a choice between ANY 9 Minimal and a decent pistol chambered in .40S&W launching a 135 to 165grn JHP I'll take the 40S&W every time. As for the 10mm I can't think of a good reason for the .357 Sig to even exist. But then I do tend to prefer my defensive handgun calibers to start with a "4" because they don't HAVE to expand much, if at all, to be effective on the receiving end. Folks tend to forget that JHP bullets are a relatively new, in terms of firearms and ammunition development history, thing. Large caliber lead projectiles won a lot of gunfights in their day, and still can here in 2023. Folks also forget that the third most popular, and effective, 19th century handgun and carbine round was the .38-40 which was actually a .40 caliber as are its decendents the .40S&W and the 10mm with the .40S&W being its very close ballistic twin. Excellent video as usual! I look for to them all!!!

I was thinking about getting a Springfield XDM Elite 3.8. I'm not a hunter or hiker that might run into a bear. I might like this slightly lower powered Winchester Ready, if it made for faster follow up shots. If it punches a little wider hole than 40, that's a plus. I simply want a 10mm in a very compact size for self defense. I think this Ready ammunition would be a good option for the XDM. So for me, this would be a "Glass Half Full" deal, rather than a "Glass Half Empty".

The trend of most ammo manufacturers offering neutered 10mm is very disappointing - seems like you need something like Buffalo Bore or Underwood if you want the "real deal". That being said, I thought the USA Ready got reasonably close, compared to most - I'd have liked to see about 70+fps more out if it, but it isn't as pitiful as most. Looking forward to more of your quest adventures to discover true 10mm!

546ft/lbs for the hornady and 589ft/lbs for the USA ready good power just not for a 10mm I'm with you on this one I want to see preferably over 700ft/lbs of energy at the muzzle and with a projectile that can handle those speeds not just a 40cal projectile that just disintegrates when it hits something, because of you and others like you these discrepancies are getting around and ammo manufacturers cant fool people as easily as they used to so if they want to be the best they have to make the best consistently ,Thanks Tools you are a big reason ammo is getting better

In defense of the hornady monoflex, its a solid copper projectile, with a deep hollowpoint at that. Copper is MUCH less dense than lead. That prpjectile likely takes up MORE case capacity than the 180gr that underwood uses.

Just make your own ammo line already for 10mm !!! The first handgun I ever shot was a buddies Kimber Custom Target Stainless II and it was a dream to shoot in 10mm. He ordered a 9mm and somehow got shipped the 10 when he couldn't get a 92fs. If I get my own 10mm ever, it has high standards for me and I will probably just make handloads. There are a few companies who can make you a custom ammo line, Black Rambo is the most well known customer of that kind of product with his signature ammo.

When the 10 mm first came out I purchased a smith 1006 and shot some of the first 10 mm loads. The loading was heavy a 200 grain bullet at 1300 fps. That was a heavy load approximating 41 mag. I was hooter of 44 mag and 41 mag and 45 colt heavy load, I could see why the fbi had problems with agents controlling it in a 1076 which had a 4 plus inch barre;.

I absolutely would have no qualms about either of these. We are talking of course about human predators, not bears or feral hogs. These actually seem like very good choices. I especially like that Handgun Hunter ! Definitely plan to try getting some. That expanded round is going to hurt really bad when a surgeon digs them out !

The Hunter looks like a flower that bloomed out just perfectly! Too bad about the penatration, but it had a nice energy dump! Today, I shot the Ammo Inc. 45 into water jugs and was surprised, point blank and only made it through two and into the third. Expansion was on point, but the penatration was lacking! I thought it would have made it through all four jugs and never to be found at point blank range!

V50 for the Handgun Hunter ammo was 1084.2. Rounding down to 1084, that means that the 50-yard energy for it was 352 energy foot pounds. V50 for the USA Ready ammo was 1099.8. Technically, that should be rounded up to 1100, but even rounding it down to 1099, it has a 50-yard energy of 456 energy foot pounds. Given that Colonel Cooper's design goal was a 200-grain FMJ bullet having a striking velocity of 1,000 feet per second at 50 meters, and that would result in a 50-meter energy of 444 energy foot pounds, I'd say that the USA Ready qualifies as "real" 10mm ammo based on its 50-yard energy. Yes, more powerful 10mm ammo exists. But the USA Ready at least reaches the minimum threshold to be in the "real 10mm" category, in my opinion. The Handgun Hunter ammo, on the other hand, qualifies as a joke.

Im kinda new to the 10mm camp (XDM 3.8 Elite) but i agree about the compared energy between calibers. 10mm should be around 600 pounds as a range ammo and 700 pounds(and up) for some of the hotter/edc loads. Otherwise one should just shoot/carry a .40 and or a 9mm with hot loads and greater capacity. I will not buy anything thats is not moving at least 1400 fps. I will use the weaker "junk rounds" for training mag swaps, misfires and jams only. These rounds are like if ya own a Ferrari and put Kelly tires on it. Thanks for you testing and great job !

I can't talk to 10mm but a FFL friend thru me 2 boxes of UAS Ready ammo to try, 270 Win and 6.5 Creedmoor. I hand load all my ammo so I saved them for foulers. I have shot a lot of factory ammo with ho-him results to just downright terrible accuracy. Was I surprised when the 270 shot to 3/4moa and the 6.5Cm showed op with a 1/2moa group both in Savage rifles. IMHO I can heartedly recommend the Winchester USA Ready ammo as opposed to the Winchester Super X which IMHO was the biggest waste of money I ever put down a rifle barrel. To bad lawyer's keep ammo company's from loading rounds to their full potential.

Your test did a GREAT job of showing the limitations of these particular loads. I have owned a Glock 20 for years and use it for woods defense when I am hunting or backpacking in Grizzly country out here in the West. I am a little under-whelmed at the penetration of both of these that were tested in this video. I am not sure how safe I would feel against an apex predator in the Rocky Mountains with either one of these that were tested today. Very impressed with the video but not too impressed with the performance of the projectiles. I will stick with my Underwood 200g hardcast, Underwood Xtreme Penetrator, and Underwood 180g XTP. Just my opinion. Great video by the way...

Thanks for testing these out! Handgun hunter in 10mm always looked like a gimicky round to me, probably meant to trick the newer 10mm owners, not entirely useless if you use them against thin skinned/small to medium game. But then why not make it competitively cheaper than the other options? In my area these go for $42, which puts these right next to the better federal premium options. Want better expansion? Go with the 200 grain HST hollow point for $45. Want a hunting specific round? Get the 200 grain Fusion soft point for $39. Hell even Hornady sells their superior 180grain & 155grain XTP rounds for $28. Why they don't take advantage of the extra tolerances of the 10mm is beyond me, but I'm willing to bet they just recycle their unsold 9mm Handgun Hunter rounds, empty the contents in 10mm shells just so they can cycle in 10mm firearms and call it a day.

Another great video! I agree, most folks would be just fine with a 40 rather than a 10mm. Properly loads the 10mm is a very formidable round, more than many need or can handle. An interesting experiment would be the T series that stumbles when shot through cloth. Take those T series and fill the cavity with either melted gel or just stuff a pea sized blob of solid gel into the cavity. If that fixes the T series for cloth issues, maybe Winchester would take a hint and correct their otherwise good T series. Gotta love the way you do these tests, a great deal of good info in the time it takes me to drink a Miller long neck.

I guarantee the speed has to do with penetration issues. MAC showed that in some of his 45 Super tests. If you sling those hollow points fast enough, they perform almost like a varmint round penetrating only 6-8 inches before they completely mushroom out and loose all energy. When you slow it down some, it actually has a much more controlled expansion and penetrates significantly deeper.

@@ToolsandTargets Nope…you can watch the test yourself where the .45 Super did significantly worse than the .45 ACP, and it wasn’t Hornady ammo. I’ve never met anyone from Hornady, and I’m far from a brand loyalist to them, although my .300 WM really likes their GX copper bullets and ELD-X bullets. I just think it’s stupid to say that a particular ammo isn’t performing to your standards when you purchase an ammo that is specifically designed, tested, and expected to perform within an envelope determined by the manufacturer. I only say that because I have watched a few hours of their podcasts where they have their ballisticians and engineers explain how/why they develop certain lines and how they expect them to work. I still run more federal and Speer than anything.

@@TackJorrance You’re more than welcome to be your own ballistician and develop the next greatest round out there. They specifically taylor their bullets to perform with a specific range they set out: X penetration at Y velocity with Z expansion and weight retention. All of their bullets for that line fall into that frame work. It saves massive time in manufacturing and provides consistent performance across an entire product line. It’s one reason they’re so large and why Buffalo Bore is just a boutique manufacturer. BB makes amazing products, but it’s very hard to scale their methods and make profit.
