16:02 The manga panel that this scene corresponds to is one of my favorite panels in the entire manga, and probably in my top 50 manga panels of all time. I feel like, as a result of the manga being in black & white, the jarring contrast between the light and shadows in the panel really highlights Mike in a way the anime couldn't able to capture visually. Not to say the anime didn't make Mike absolutely terrifying! I think the build-up + the soundtrack was able to capture the foreboding air pretty well. Different media face different solutions to different challenges, of course.

One fact I always love about this part is how Gon, a character we know have a strong affinity with animals and grew in the wild, is afraid of Mike, showing that even if Gon is very talented, there are still limits to the things he can do.

@@Ashewyn or is he? The animals of Whale Island never frightened him like Mike, a guard wolf trained by the Zoldycks, who are in fact higher on the food chain. The human name of Mike is also a good contrast to Killua, named after the Japanese verb to kill- showing the purpose and set path his family had in mind for him which he told Gon from the start he wanted to decide for himself as he was sick of killing/working and wanted more from life- like Gon’s father, Killua wants to be free of familial obligations to become what he finds personally fulfilling, in this case being a kid with friends, not an emotionless killer (=assassin workaholic) like his brother.
