I would say that Togashi is actually one of the best writers (manga, prose, graphic novels) at writing intelligent characters, maybe THE best at having multiple intelligent characters realistically interact with one another. The fact that they are often working off of different knowledge bases is really just an unnecessary flex on Togashi's part, but a welcome one. Dumbing characters down out of an inability to write genuine intelligence is admittedly rampant in fiction in general and anime/manga in particular, but is not something Togashi can ever credibly be accused of. As for having Basho be the plant instead of Squala in this instance, it certainly could have been done if that's what Togashi wanted, but didn't really make sense when Parker put it forward. At that point, both Kurapika and Melody had independently confirmed Squala as the plant. We, as the audience, know Kurapika is not the plant and it is very unlikely Melody is either (we see her interact with the same recruiter as Kurapika moments after he initially finds the job). For Squala to not be the plant, both Kurapika and Melody would need to either be incompetent or lying for an organization they have yet to join. There could be narrative reasons for this, but to what end? especially considering that the purpose of this entire scene is to formally introduce the abilities of Kurapika and this new cast of characters to the audience. What you end up with is a twist for the sake of a twist with no real narrative purpose. If this seems like a lot to write for such a small comment, it's because it is.

Only if you've never read Berserk/Miura, Vagabond/Slam Dunk/Inoue or Akira/Otomo you could think that Togashi is one of the best writers, let alone THE best at having "multiple intelligent characters". Makes sense if you're 16 years old but even then, Togashi has never written brilliant characters even if his life depended on it. There's very few, maybe 2 or 3, barely intelligent characters he ever wrote and Kurapika would be up there. Togashi is the same guy who wrote Yu Yu Hakusho, which CONSTANTLY insults the intelligence of the reader/viewer with terrible writing and incredibly bland characters that require the lowest IQ possible to be understood. Togashi is creative and imaginative but one thing he's not is some kind of "intelligent writer", let alone character writer. There's some clever adventure stuff in HXH and some of the most clever shonen stuff but overall he's the typical guy who thinks he's way more intelligent than he actually is.

@@Guy_Dude ive read all of these, and while their are certainly is intelligent writing in some of these mangas, id 100p argue that they are especially ovverrated, and if anything much of the granduer surroudning these mangas is due to the pretentiousness and the elitist perspective that the readers want to hold. Dont get me wrong, Berserk is a masterpiece (though, like everything, there is some narrative flaws, and relative weakness in character writing, such as the fact that their is literally no strong female characters, they only seem like narrative devices) but its strength is not even in intelligence in characters, its thematic presentation. HXH is actually way better than that, and fundementally does a better jojb exploring intellectual themes in many different avenues, such as geopoltics.

It's not a genius thing. Dowsing is just literally supernatural and Kurapika doesn't have time for games. It makes more sense as time goes on. He's a very serious person, bordering on self-serious at times, and it kind falls in line with that. Also, I'd say out of a lot of mangaka, Togashi is pretty up there with his storytelling. And I think sometimes Parker's expectations get the better of him. On a different note, Gon's default fit is practical and iconic.

When Kurapika analyzes the situation and comes to a conclusion, his conclusion is obvious and his explanation is unecessary. But when things are not explained it is not noticed or understood at all! Like for example, reasoning spoiler, Kurapika being misscategorized as manipulator because he porposefully leaves his chains on the open to misslead people;

@@Guy_Dude Do you have a personal grudge against Togashi or something? I can understand that you may like topics and style of writing that other mangaka have and even not liking Togashis' style of writing, but denying that he's good at what he does is being willfully ignorant. Clearly he can write smart characters if he wants to, but he also keeps in mind the ages of the characters and what information those characters are actually working with; and he keeps it constant. Kurapika is clever for a teen, but clearly not as clever as an adult with similar intelligence but more experience. I'd like to argue more but I'm not exactly sure what you mean by childish exactly, since a lot of different people have a different interpretation of what being childish is.

Something you need to know about togashi is that he thought out and planned everything. This isnt one piece where most of your shit is made up on the spot so that they can keep making more money from the series. Togashi writes like hes devine. His stories have so many layers and with so much detail that you can start unraveling that shit and never run out. You can rewatch this series a dozen times and find out new thing's that you never realized or new before. The critcal breakdowm analysis some youtubers make about the show are some of the best videos ive ever seen flat out. Their world is living and breathing. Even some of the biggest facts and symbolism you can discover arent spoon fed to you. People love how souls games give you lore and story and togashi does something similar. You look for beauty in meaning in his show and you never run out. He doesnt even bring any attention at all to some of the most important things in their universe. You can learn more about each character that youre never going to be told about just by playing close attention. Take the hinduism, Buddhism, Christianity, Judaism, and muslim symbolism. Bet you never knew killua and his family are jewish. The only time they made something like this more apparent is with chrollo but thats his whole motif along with the troupe. Theres more but i dont want to spoil it and there are videos on it if you want to learn more. Togashi is one of the only writers ever to write genius characters well while also being a genius. The only other auther that could ever compare to togashi is j.r.r. Tolkien. Thats it.
