That is a mechanical diesel no knock sensor. A knock sensor can not control the violent explosions of gasoline in a diesel engine! The engine will be severely damaged and eventually destroyed! I recommend automatic transmission fluid to restore the viscosity of the fuel, so the pump can develop enough pressure to overcome the pop pressure of the injector nozzles. If there's room, adding some diesel fuel will help lower the ignition temperature of the gasoline enough, to auto ignite by the compression of the engine. I recommend running out that fuel, as low as you dare, then, fill up with diesel fuel. That will hopefully protect the injection pump, and the engine will run perfectly normal. You will find, that the engine will run exceptionally clean, have a lot of power, but the fuel consumption will be higher, because the BTU content of gasoline is lower than diesel fuel.
@johnpowers12753 жыл бұрын
@@vincentrobinette1507 could be wrong, trying to maybe learn. How could diesel lower the ignition temp? Isnt diesel ignited by high heat? (Via high compression, why no ignition needed)
@vincentrobinette15073 жыл бұрын
@@johnpowers1275 Diesel has Cetane. It has an autoignition temperature of~360°F. Gasoline has Octane, which has a much higher autoignition temperature, closer to~490°F, or even higher. Premium gasoline can be above 650°F. The compression in a diesel engine may not be high enough, to touch off gasoline, which is formulated to resist pre-ignition due to compression, or hot spots in the combustion chamber. A small amount of diesel, just to touch off the gasoline should allow it to run, and allow combustion using glow plugs in a cold engine. The transmission fluid is only to increase viscosity, to prevent blow-back in the plungers in the injection pump, and, to lubricate the pump to avoid damage.

Starting on gasoline was always going to be tough since it has a poor cetane rating. Gasoline is refined for a high octane rating, or resistance to destination, which is the opposite of what you want in a diesel. I ran the 4bt Cummins in my truck on 50/50 gas/oil once to get me 5 miles down the road in a pinch. It ran great with plenty of lube for the injection system. Motor oil has a good cetane rating, so starting wasn't an issue either. If he would have added like 10-15% oil, it probably would have started on the mostly gas mix.

A direct injection compression ignition engine can theoretically burn anything combustible as long as its warmed up enough or has enough compression. Btu per gallon difference will determine max power without turning the screw. But lack of lubrication will quickly destroy the fuel pump. 2 stroke oil and low octane gas should be perfectly fine in a mechanical diesel. How about doing an ammonia conversion on a gas or diesel truck? Reading about it , it's like a propane conversion. Ammonia is used in jet and rocket fuel. And land speed record was achieved in a straight ammonia rocket car. Ammonia is cheap and more stable , safer as a green fuel than hydrogen, and viable unlike electric cars.
@ericlotze7724 Жыл бұрын
Ammonia is neat, although as any farmer who applied Anhydrous (or just anyone with a bottle of Aqueous in their Laundry Room) knows, that shit can mess you up! If done safely it’s okay though. Look into Dimethyl Ether (DME) though! It *physically cannot make soot*, and has a higher Cetane value than diesel! Volvo and some others made some big rigs that ran off of it. It had some issues with Seals if i remember correctly but if they can make rotary and methanol race cars work, i bet with enough dev work one could get it working reliably. Stores like propane too, unlike CNG.

During this time you can get up to 70-75 mph. As soon as it catches back up it'll slow you back down to 65. @@jamessimmons4770 I think you are correct, I heard in 1984 that the 6.9 was a Ford engine. I drove a Ford with the 6.9 and other than being noisy, wasn't impressed. The 7.3 is diffantly an International engine. I could be wrong and both were International. One thing I don't like about the Ford power stroke is it uses high oil pressure to operate the fuel injectors. If you don't keep the oil changed it can stop the engine, seen that a few times

I accidently filled my diesel truck with gas one time and drove it 20 miles before it started sputtering. I realized what I did because my other truck I drive daily is gas so I thot wth I will just drive it on home 20 more miles. It sputtered occasionally and I drained the tank and refilled with diesel and it has ran fine ever since. I was told which I am not sure I believe that it actually cleans the motor up. It was mixed because the tank was about 1/4 full btw.

injection system needs lube lol. it usually gets it from diesel. if you put about a quart of atf in about 5 gallons of gas youll get your lubricity you need

As long as it’s old style MECHANICAL injection you will be ok… i used to have an 89 f250 that literally ran on anything it loved used engine oil and new fry oil.. never ran used fry oil because the water content in it would kill the expensive injection pump..

Probably 1/2 the reason it ran so good on straight gas is b/c its an idi. Unlike a normal direct injected engine where the combustion takes place in the cylinder on top of the piston. Where pre detination can occur kinda like a normal gas engine. In the idi, all the combustion happens in the pre cup then a kinda flame thrower goes through the hole into the cylinder pushing the piston down with the expanding games. So it was safer to do so since it never would pre detonate on valuable moving parts. And it also helped that he used 93 octane instead of 87. I kinda want to see him do it again but with 87 octane. I also want to know how much nitrous he was injecting, it would help in my case to get on the interstate faster with my 6.9idi😅

You have to legit try to destory those old idi Ford diesels! They were gutless as sin and cold blooded as hell but man what a bullet proof engine and transmission! The synchros in that old trans were known for going out after a few hundred thousand miles but if you know how to double clutch worth a damn they'd keep going forever too. My buddy's grandpa had one he bought new in 1983 that he ran for almost 500k miles on more or less OEM equipment before giving to my buddy as his first rig. Granted his grandpa was the king of maintenance. Then it survived my buddy's teenage driving years as well as college. To this day it still lives on as a snow plow/sanding truck and his big homemade dumpster/garbage trailer he hauls to the dump about once a month. To my knowledge all that my buddy has ever done to it mechanically is brakes, the clutch, a couple glow plugs, a starter, a water pump, an alternator and rebuilt the front hubs. It won't cold start if it's much under 40 degrees without a shot if starting fluid but that's almost normal for those old idi's. It won't stay in fifth gear anymore but it rarely sees speeds needing fifth gear. If it does need fifth he holds it in gear with a bungee cord and a couple eyelets he screwed into the dash. When it's cold it smokes like crazy but hey, with God only knows how many miles what can you expect. Once it warms up it runs pretty clean unless you hammer on it. The speedometer and odometer quit working a long time ago but the tach still works, most of the time. When it quits working a good snack on the dash always brings it back. My buddy had surgery a couple years ago and was pretty much off his feet for a couple months. I was one of three who would go out, plow and sand his property during the winter. One of the other guys just used his own plow and refused to drive ol' Rusty. I was the only one he trusted to take the truck off of his property to haul his dumpster. I gotta say, that old truck is quite a handful to operate but it's a lot of fun. Its name is Rusty and for good reason. He's been talking about retiring Rusty for years but just can't bring himself to do it. Its use is so limited he just can't justify it as Rusty never lets him down. It's a true beater with a (killer) heater. The end lol.
