I’ve spent 5 hour full detailing and he wanted hand wax so I did it I went as low as $350 he offered $ 100 we went back and forth and he ended up giving $150 I took it because I was just staring and he was a one of the first customers I was afraid because he was related to a customer that had 3 cars so from now on I negotiate the price before I start I recommend any extra work and if they agree I do it sometimes I do a little extra but it’s on my own! Thanks for sharing your experience with us

This is why I got Zippity and started using the Multi Point Inspection tool. I’m not leaving anything to chance anymore. I’ve have plenty of experiences where It’s my word versus the client’s, where I’ve had to forfeit time and money. I love detailing and my business wouldn’t survive if I let people walk all over me. Most pro detailers I know would not release the car to the owner until they pay. I have seen that happen at my buddies shop here in Florida. The guy said he wasn’t paying so he kept his car until the full payment was rendered. You have enough great ratings where taken this guy to court would have been worth it but I get why you didn’t.

Great advice, always keep your cool because you never know who's recording you these days. Having some sort of contract in place, whether digital or hard copy, could be a good thing to have in place for those customers who don't want to pay.

Yeah, that's a mechanic's lien plain and simple. Here at our shop we've never had a payment issue. We would hold the vehicle against payment and file a lien against the property. Depending upon how long ago it's been, and your local laws you might still be able to put a lien against the title.

I am a detailer in south Florida. I feel the struggle on this , definitely frustrating expecting the person to be able to pay the price and they don't even give you a fraction of it and disrespect you while doing it. My main thing is ceramic coatings and paint correction. I like to make it clear as day the price before business starts especially since all the jobs are 500-1000$+ jobs I don't want to have a disagreement on a number like that after the work is done. Because im so clear on it ive never had an issue so far. if the work was more than you expected you should have probably stopped the job completly and been like look sir this is going to be an upcharge etc. keep up the good work brotha

Taking them to court would have been a waste of your $$ time...if you win, you still have to go after them for payment because the court won't make them pay the judgement. You have the experience to look at a detailing job and know how much time and product you will need to complete the job. Unless, you just had pictures to go by. Whatever the case, this should have never happened to you or anyone with sufficient experience. I think that the idea of a "blank check" was too good for you to pass up. Next time, quote your price before you begin, and ask for a text confirmation.

My worst customer when I was selling new cars, I would regularly go above and beyond. I had one guy come in and test drive 4 cars over like 2 or 3 days, I took each car to his home to see how it fit in garage and a heap of stuff, not just a quick lap around the block. I gave him my price and he went home and called another dealer, told them my price and the other dealer gave him an extra $100 off a $30,000 car and he bought it off them. I asked him what I could have done better, or what set them apart, he said nothing, I just called them and they said they would do it $100 less so I bought it. He then came in to give me a bottle of $10 wine to say thank you for a great experience and it was so hard not to lose my shit and be like, man, that doesn't put food on my table, why would you put me through all that and not at least ask if I can match the price why have someone give you all that service and go elsewhere over $100 on a $30,000 purchase with someone you've never spoke to. I did all the work for the other dealer.

I would absolutely record ANY verbal agreements like that first story! Also, I would have hit him with the "We are not a car washing service: we are detailers and your looking at a cost of around $1100-?? dollars...are you prepared for a bill like that"? That would have softened the blow on his end a bit, and warned him what to expect. Also, get it in writing wherever possible. Can detailers do "Mechanics Liens" on non-payers? I could see a jerk like that calling the cops and them making you give him the keys with minimal payment. Cant sell or trade the car if there is a mechanics lien on it. One way or the other....you get paid!

Those customers are the worst, but you can sniff em out from a mile though. Thats why i always tell big jobs over 250USD to pay in a way where its reserved.. idk if you guys have that option. But we do.. We can reserve a certain fixed amount until the job is done, then if its lower then that fixed amount..then that amount is the only thing that gets withrawed.. Else they will need to pay over the fixed price, and the reservation will be canceled. If they refuse to pay, i just keep the reservation. The reservation is fixed at 150, which is whatever i do..is my cost at break even unless its super big job.. Then i have contracts signed first. Even at 300 i have a contract, which they easily sign off on whenever they make a booking. Id search for something like that.
