Air Rifle Hunting Dirty Pigeons have To Go

I was asked by a farmer friend to help with a problem he has with feral pigeons and jackdaws coming into his sheds and as well as scrounging not only through the silage but also the feed bins for meal that's given to the cattle they were dunging all over the shed and his machinery. This can cause not only a health and safety issue for the livestock but also those who work in the sheds as the birds dung over everything, the silage, water troughs, bars, gates, walls and even the cattle.
This is all done on farm land that i have permission to do so on with legally held air rifles and is done in a legal and humane manner as not to prolong or glorify the death of the birds.
This can legally be done through the Department Of Agriculture, Environment And Rural Affairs Wildlife (Northern Ireland) Order 1985 (As Amended) Licence.
This Licence hereby authorises for the purpose of preventing the spread of disease and preventing serious damage to livestock, foodstuffs for livestock, crops, vegetables, fruit, growing timber and fisheries ANY AUTHORISED PERSON to kill or take any of the following birds:-
Crow, Jackdaw, Magpie, Pigeon (Wood), Pigeon (Feral), Rook, Sparrow (House), Starling.
Range Finder Bushnell Scout 1000
Equifix Dutch Bay
Tactacam 5.0 and FTS unit
Rifle BSA Super10 John Bowkett Blueprinted .22cal 15ft/lb
Scope Nikko Stirling Targetmaster 4-16x44 LRX
Pellets JSB Diabolo Exact 15.9 Grain

Hi Dave great video, bet that issue with the super 10s safety is a bit of a pain. Fortunately mine on my 25 yr old Super 10 seems ok but will keep an eye on it. Spent £600 on a new Ixia had to send it back twice before I had my money back and put the money towards an FX Maverick.... and my 25 year old Super 10 just keep plodding on 😎👍

Good video David. Pigeons make a hell of a mess of everything. First time on one of my perms I went out at night using Nitesite and had 70 pigeons in a night then went out the following night and took another 70! Nowadays I only get half a dozen or so at a time .

Asking out of pure ignorance - does taking out a dozen or so birds put much of a dent in the amount of bird crap getting dumped in the barn? I might have guessed it would take a lot more to make much of a difference!

Well every bird helps and i've been back since and took out even more and intend to go again but i've found that a lot of the dung is due to a good number of starlings roosting in the shed at night as well.

It was really a happy accident as the rifle started as a 12ft/lb gun which i used to shoot rats and corvids in the cattle sheds until i sent it to Sandwell Fieldsports for a service were Tony phoned me to say that after the service the rifle produced 15ft/lb but since its on my FAC i said that would be fine and i've kept at that ever since.

It does take patience but if you keep looking and asking the farmers in your area you'll get somewhere in the end and if you do a good job there you might get recommended to other farmers like i have in the past.

I'm sorry but these are not someone's pet birds they are feral and they not only roost and nest in these sheds but also take the meal set out for the livestock and dung over everything feed bins, water troughs, machinery and even the livestock which can spread diseases like paratuberculosis, salmonella and cryptosporidiosis, replacing their eggs might stop them from nesting but it wont stop them from eating the meal or roosting.

Hi Lara, I don’t think u have any idea about farming and the expensive damage that these pests cause! Yes you could destroy nests but the nests could be many miles from that farm and many of them are not easily accessible! You could put poison food out for them but then other species like song birds could be at risk! Shooting is selective and only the legal pests get eliminated ! They carry many diseases which can harm livestock and humans as well! Food for thought (excuse the pun)!
