Sometimes I just don't feel like shooting. They are beautiful animals and sometimes I just enjoy their presence. I think it makes you a hunter instead of a killer...

There is a distinct possibility that you, Randy, are almost as unlucky as me. Being unlucky while hunting in Alaska, can have a bad outcome. Good video, and you stuck with the trail till you found the bear. Well done.

Randy Newberg, Hunter - well it's been 32 years now, but I won't EVER forget my experience with a black bear up close. I was 16 yo & hunting deer on opening day of N.Y. northern tier rifle season, carrying a .270 win with 130gr Nosler's when about 20 minutes before dark, I heard a noise behind me, when I turned to look it was a bear at (4') four feet from me, I instinctively shoved the barrel at him and fired, he barrel rolled & went down, I got to me feet, chambered another round as he got up - aimed & put two more in him, before he took a step towards me, I fired my last round & started running for my dad who was about 400 yds from me, he hearing me scream for help, came running, when he seen me - he said the bear was about 50 yds behind me as I ran up the hill he was on, he told me to drop - I did & he fired 3 rounds from his .308. The bear turned and ran into Black Swamp (that's actual name of swap) - we left the woods & returned next day with DEC (Department of Environmental Conservation) - the two officers refused to enter swap stating it was to dangerous, & forbid us to follow bear in, we had only found minimal blood (couple drops literally in 400-500yds), I was fortunate enough to receive a plaster casting of the bears front & rear PAW imprints, with a letter from Conservation stating that it is the LARGEST recorded track in N.Y. history - with a estimated live weight 700+ pounds. I still have letter and castings to this day. My mistake was trying to shoot a bear with deer bullets, ONLY explanation I ever got on bullet performance was, they were to light for heavy bone & @ such close range with the speed of the bullets they more than likely fragmented upon impact, so what this ALL boils down to is I KNOW WHAT TYPE OF ""PUCKER"" FACTOR, you had going on in them undershorts. Great video's & stories and educational content you produce, please keep them coming and stay healthy so you can continue to persue your hunting passion. Thanks for sharing, & reading my (100% TRUE) story.

As a hunter in the South Carolina mountains where visibility is like those woods, I ALWAYS have a round in the chamber. I understand people wanting to be safe, but not being able to get a quick shot off because it’s not ready to shoot is very unwise. Every time I see a video where the hunter misses a good opportunity to get a big critter because he’s not got the rifle ready..

I always keep my gun locked and loaded even if I know for a fact the animal is down. I have tracked big central pa bears into a thicket and I was the only one with a loaded gun and they were happy I had it loaded to finish the bear off

If you’re tracking a wounded animal you put a round in the chamber. If you think it’s too crowded with friends around you leave them behind and put a round in the chamber. You especially put a round in the chamber when you’re tracking an animal that can kill you. Sooo......someone forgot to put a round in the chamber :) And Randy, it’s better to shoot a big bear the first day of the hunt than not shooting a bear at all. And put a round in the chamber ;)

You guys are having a hell of a time there!! You never go looking for a bear in thick brush like that without a bullet in the chamber, even though black bears are usually always more scared of you than you are of them, when they are wounded & they are in thick brush, you just go slow & quiet & pay attention!! But whoever the front guy is needs a bullet in the chamber because a Bear can charge you when they're wounded! You're just lucky that wasn't a grizzly than things can get ugly fast!! I've also been hunting Bears since I was 11 years old too, Montana

So I am moving to Alaska soon and I was wondering what a good all around caliber would be for up there I can take recoil but I can’t am on a budget of like $500 what caliber and rifle would you guys recommend where I am going to be at has caribou moose brown bear
@Fresh_Tracks
@Fresh_Tracks 6 жыл бұрын
With all of those species in mind, I would go with a .30 caliber. Probably a .308 or .30-06 on the low end, but with moose and brown bears I would probably look more toward a .300 Win Mag, .300 WSM, or even a step larger with a .338.

And they are all checked daily. P.S Why don’t you have a handgun, Randy? Just curious. When I go with my dad and uncles they all carry a pistol of some type. Like my dad carries a Glock 20SF with Buffalo Bore +P 190g Hard cast bullets. Uncles have the same, except Tell carries a 1911 in .357 Magnum. Heck even I carry a Glock 35Xz and yes guessed it Buffalo Bore +P .40 S&W.
