Hunting Alaska black bear with Randy Newberg. Episode 1 from Season 4 of On Your Own Adventures (OYOA) is the most difficult hunting experience of Randy's life. If you hunt long enough, it will happen. In spite of his best efforts, Randy cannot find an Alaska black bear he hit hard. Search as he may, the bear has disappeared.

what was the caliber? it looked like a 24 inch barrel ---which would rule out the 308? tough to be sure? 270? or the 300 win? looks like you hit the shoulder and did not penetrate ---he was angled a little-- right when you shot---I would have waited until he was at a perfect side view---that would give you the lung shot.

It happens if you hunt long enough. But that was 100% avoidable. Ive killed a lot of big animals and having said that, a 7-08 shooting 140 grain bullets will kill a bear with good shots every time. The problem is that caliber leaves zero margin on a marginal shot. A 7/08/6.5 Crede etc, shoulder shot on a big bear will break the shoulder but seldom break both or penetrate far enough to break the off shoulder and/or spine. If you hunt big black bears, moose or elk you should shoot as much gun as you can handle, not some petite deer caliber or marginal bullet. 300 win mag is a minimum. 300PRC, 300UM, 375 HH or Ruger. Remember, it’s hydrostatic shock that puts an animal down if you don’t break a spine and a 140 bullet from a 7-08 just doesn’t make any.

Thanks for sharing Randy. I have only begun to resume hunting after 15 ish years because of something like this. It is devastating to realize that there is no hope in finding the animal that you shot. Thanks for publicizing this unfortunate situation that you had no control over once the bullet went down range.

This has happened to me once in my life, on a mule deer. I felt good about the shot, but I rushed the follow up and pushed him into thick brush. My brother and I looked for hours, but I never saw him again. I still feel terrible about that, still replay the shot trying to figure out where I went wrong or what I could have done differently.

Thanks for sharing this experience honestly. There is another big budget series I have watched that is very good but features nothing but one shot kills as if this never happens. That's good I guess from the viewpoint of not displaying the ugly side of hunting but it's not real.

Ive always heard to shoot center mass on a black bear. Looking at a picture of the anatomy of the bear will confirm this, the vitals are not in the same spot as ruminant game species.

Sucks man.. i know exactly how you feel. Last season i spotted a nice buck off to my right, and i didnt have enough time to get a range on him so i guessed at 240yards. Shot. He dropped and kicked. Then all of a sudden he was up and running into the bush with no chance of a second shot.. searched for 2 hours into dark that night then came back the next morning with more people to help look and we couldnt find him. Thankfully, we didnt find any sign of blood or hair so im pretty sher he got off clean. After re-analyzing the shot, he was only 140yards away not the 240 we guessed(elevation drop messed us up) so the only explanation i could think of was i ended up shooting him high probably hitting his antler(which would explain why he dropped but no blood or fur). The feeling you get afterwards is hard to explain, but i saw it in your eyes this video. Thank you for being such an ethical and responsible hunter! You are an inspiration.

Yes it happened to me september of 2010 northern Ontario black bear hunt, we even left him for a night and next day never find him .I do know how its feel brother.

Thank you for sharing this hunt Randy. I had the same thing happen to me when I first started hunting. I shot a bear in Ontario, Canada while archery hunting and thought I made a good shot. We followed the blood trail into the night and continued on the next day but eventually the blood trail disappeared. I felt awful. I never want to wound any animal with a bad shot. It was definitely a humbling learning experience.

Having lived in Alaska for 38 years, the black bear is the only animal on the top of my list, I would like to hunt. Most people I know do not want to hunt them. They want to hunt everything else, the moose being on that list, then the caribou. Well, the next two years for me, it's school. I may do a black bear through Alaska"s Healing Hearts, I'm a disable veteran. Have Fun!

Thank you for sharing this story so openly and honestly. I can relate very much, it is devastating to know that your actions caused the suffering of an animal and there's little you can do about it. I am glad that here in Germany it is legal to use dogs for blood tracking, it increases the chances of getting an animal and ending the suffering dramatically. Yet I've recebtly partaken in a blood tracking of a wild boar (shot at by someone else) with similar signs - loads of blood at the beginning, medium-to-dark red and liquid, slight dripping with bigger bursts every now and then when movement reopened the wound, and no blood after a last bed - likely a muscle shot wounding some medium but no big arteries, and not necessarily lethal. The dog could trace the boar for another 4km and we still didn't get it. So even a very experienced blood tracking dog doesn't guarantee to get to the wounded animal.

It is gut wrenching when it happens. I am thankful that in my 40 years of hunting, it has happened very few times. Yet, I still struggle with it. In most states here in America, dogs are not allowed, though it seems it would be a helpful idea. Thanks for watching.
