You’d like it. I saw this movie in the early 1980’s and I specifically remember two clues that tell you it was Michael Gambon’s character. The most important clue was that he tried to flee as soon as he learned that he was being hunted - before any evidence of there even being a werewolf. He was the only ‘guest’ that didn’t need evidence since he KNEW there was a werewolf present… himself. So he was immediately aware that HE was the one being hunted. This part was left out of Mark’s review. The second clue came when Gambon’s character tried passing around the silver candlestick, knowing that it was actually harmless due to the lack of wolfbane pollen present. As a werewolf, he would likely know this. There is another more subtle clue when they are discussing their backstories. His behavior was different from the others. While the others were defiantly defending their past behavior, or even bragging about it; Gambon’s character is more cagey and elusive. It’s worth a watch and clever at times.

Murder By Death (1976) and Clue (1985) are two of my favorite spoofs of this genre. On a side note, I love that Mr. Hammer Alumnus Himself, Peter Cushing, starred in The Beast Must Die (1974) and Sir Alec Guinness was in Murder By Death. If there’s even a slight nod to a Star Wars “Degrees of Separation,” my brain will find it! 💚🤣🤣💚

In my last year of high school I had a girlfriend who was part of a clique who were really eccentric. They were a mix of goth and hipster with steampunk thrown in for bizarre measure lol. Anyway they would get together to do those murder mystery dinner party games like two or three times a week. They also did Live Action Roleplaying. Both much more fun than they ought to be. Would love to do this again.

Tom is apparently a big game hunter, but I'm guessing he went to college for botany, had a side-gig as a Leather Dom to pay his tuition, and eventually made his fortune in silversmithing. He then looked for a career where he could use all his skills, and the only match was werewolf hunter.

I have this movie on a DVD released by Dark Sky. There's a pretty informative commentary track by the director, Paul Annett. There are two nuggets that have stuck with me: Peter Cushing and Charles Gray did not know how to play chess. Annett relays anecdote of one of the actors asking Peter Cushing for advice on acting. Cushing simply replied, "When you are done with your line, close your mouth."

You know - the game Werewolf (or Mafia) has been around for quite some time and entertained millions of people at home (even Among Us and Secret Hitler are variations on it), but no movie has really been able to successfully capture the same thing. I unironically love this movie. It's just so unselfconsciously "out there" in a way that films don't seem able to do anymore, but then I'm a fan of that kind of movie - stuff like "Psychomania" - that's just batshit crazy and runs with it. The whole "detective" / "werewolf break" thing feels tacked-on, though, as if the producer decided to add a marketing gimmick in post, but there's a certain William Castle type schlocky charm to it. For some reason I can never seem to remember who the werewolf actually is - presumably because of the fake-out with there being two of them - but that helps a lot with the re-watchability. Anyway, you've got to love all the 70s "wakka wakka" music and blaxploitation vibes - and it has one of those wonderfully downbeat endings that were seemingly a requirement in 1970s genre flicks, with (SPOILER ALERT) a nice bit of karma for Mr Big Game Hunter: his final kill being himself. Sheer poetry :)

I've actually seen this movie before watching the review, and I like it. The cast is really good (Hammer legend Peter Cushing, Anton Driffing, Charles Gray, Calvin Lockhart) and if you keep attention from the get-go, you can actually pinpoint who's the werewolf: couldn't be the professor and Tom's GF because they bot made an appearance when the werewolf had its dinner with the pilot; Davina appeared soon after so she couldn't be either (she was also very pissed when they served her blooded raw meat); the Cannibal was always quite happy with touching silver and he also kisses it, so he's excluded; the old man and the mustaches guy were the only ones remaining the but the former was killed. Also Mustaches was the one suggesting holding silver to prove they're not werewolf because he had his hands covered. So, as I said, everything stack up.

The funniest part is that I never see the werewolf doing something bad lmao, like they didnt even say or show why the werewolf is such a big problem or why the rich guy want it dead. They never show a flashback where the werewolf kill his parents or kill some villagers or 'something'. And its never explained why or how the rich guy got all those people in there against their will and how/why he suspect the werewolf was among them. And I mean, yea, it killed the security guy, but he shot it first, so it was self defense tbh. And the old guy in his room was probably killed by the werewolf wife, who btw got infected completely by accident, so it wasnt it either. And the dog, well, the dog attacked first too.

There used to be choose your own ending movies. Some theaters had these clunky remotes on the arms of the chairs. The audience would vote for what they wanted to see next. I'm assuming this movie was shown in those types of theaters. And you know he's done this whole dinner party/werewolf thing a lot, bc you can tell his wife has had enough after he says, "Someone here is a werewolf."

I actually liked The Beast Must Die when I watched it, especially the werewolf break and the lead character being Black and not a stereotype. Stupid and ineffective, but not a stereotype.

What makes this film interesting is the alternate endings. There are eight in total, so you the viewer would have to pick one; right before ARGs connecting to movies exist, whodunit cinema most likely has multiple endings, leaving up to the audience themselves to solve the mystery, rather than the final scene and reveal ending up in the same level as a Scooby-Doo episode(before the DTV movie Zombie Island subverted the scumbag in a mask shtick the series held for so long during the 90s).

I watched this on Svengoolie, and was thoroughly entertained. Also, getting pollen in your drink is how you get spontaneous fermentation going, and as we all know, spontaneous fermentation, (or "SPON FERM" as I call it) creates some very delicious happy accidents. Alright, I've gotta go take a werewolf break... oh, I mean, a totally regular, normal, non-werewolf related break.

Okay, so I don't know if anyone has said it yet, but here it is. The easiest mythological creature to go hunting for is the Loch Ness Monster. All you need is about $3.50 unless the monster tries asking for more, but you might be able to talk him down to $2.50

I think it’s cheaper ($0.85) if you are wearing traditional Scottish garb while standing close to the loch with Goldfish crackers.

I agree with a lot of your opinions. I saw this as a kid and one of the things that I LOVED was that it was a Black man who wielded all this power and influence. But yeah he blew his money on some stupid shit. I’d almost love to see a remake.

2 things, but I'll bring up #2 at an undetermined date. First thing is that the way you describe this movie would be a decent KZbin show(Edit: KZbinshow by the director or writer on a channel like Omelet). OK. I can't wait for #2. I love your bits when you talk within the still you cut out. I wish you did more of them... it's probably my favorite parts of watching your show(I have fallen asleep to playlists of your show just to listen to your snarkiness knowing that I have seen most of your episodes(I watched you and Brendon Tenold for 2×30ish hour solo trips from TX to CT and CT back to TX this past Thanksgiving 2021.) and they are the moments I look forward to most). You could incorporate them into more of your episodes but you would probably need to hire an editor just for those jokes. The plus side is that you can do more of the jokes, while still leaving the outro for outtakes. 😁
