To expand on the "G-Man isn't supposed to be this omniscient" point from a better informed angle: If you look past his cryptic wording and behaviour, G-Man is a pretty straightforward employer in the official games. When he defrosts Gordon for HL2, his plan amounts to "Hey, Gordon? I need you kill Dr. Breen by the end of the week. Here's a few contacts to hit up if you need more weapons." Simple as that. Furthermore, we know he can't account for everything, otherwise he would've been able to see the Vortigaunts overpowering him and freeing Gordon coming and made countermeasures. He's clever, but he isn't Tzeentch.

@L A Alyx certainly does take him in a new direction that shows him to be a lot more powerful than what we assumed, but it's still not to the point of what we see here. His actions are still pretty straightforward ("Hey, Alyx. I have a job opening since Gordon's underperforming. Name your price."), and he's still fallible since the Combine were able to imprison him. What his newfound time-altering shenanigans means is up in the air (and given that this is Valve it might stay that way) but it seems like this is just Episode 2 G-Man taking a backwards leap in time to try a Plan B after deciding Gordon isn't worth the effort anymore, whereas by HDTF's rules it'd be pre-HL2 G-Man making sweeping predictions of Gordon somehow going off the rails.

@@LA-be8fuHe totally has outer powers like time manipulation, but his powers seem to be limited to having to use an “employee” to do the work, he simply guides them in the direction he needs for things to be “nudged” as he puts it, like a game of domino where you are permitted to use a single piece at a time to make everything else fall. He could totally make the combine leave earth if he wanted, but said nudge goes against the interests of whoever is “employing” G-Man.

The dumbest part is that he could've easily just sworn revenge on him for killing his comrades which is a helluva lot more realistic and understandable than getting the shit kicked out of and getting scarred. And then the whole revenge thing gets turned on its head when Mitchell flat-out gives up on it halfway through only for Gman to twist his arm into doing it because of a convoluted scheme that doesn't even make any sense within the context of HL2's story. Case in point: Gman spent 20 years orchestrating events just so Mitchell can provide a distraction for Freeman to escape City 17...even though at that exact time he should be stuck in limbo for a week after escaping Nova Prospect with Alyx...and the game itself acknowledges this! To say that they didn't give a shit would be a major understatement.

@@TheMasterUnity Because the "epic twist" is that G-Man didn't want Gordon killed but rather it was a whole conspiracy to frame Mitchell for killing that guy's daughter so the Combine would be distracted fighting his forces and make things easier for Gordon. Note that this could've been achieved by having someone, anyone (not necessarily Mitchell) form a private army and then just telling them to fight the Combine. Also why the Combine would care so much about the death of the daughter of one of their human minions is never answered.

This whole game is just an example of poor communication. The level designers had little to go on, the people that set up the gunplay weren't told the types of enemies the player was going to fight, the people setting up the enemies weren't told what kind of gunplay there was going to be, the voice actors weren't given instructions on how to deliver their lines... It's like Sonic Forces. There is a good story idea at it's core, but the problems, bad writing and incompetence butchered things so badly that it makes the core idea look bad too. Except, y'know, Forces's story is actually salvagable with some thought, but to save HDTF you'd have to rip out the entire story, progression and characters, then establish new ones and redevelop the whole thing based on the same core premise.

Here's how you fix the HDTF story; Mitchell initially believes that Gordon Freeman intentionally Unleashed hell and doomed the world for no obvious reason. Mitchell slowly but surely pieces together that Gordon is guilty of nothing more than being late to work and by the time he's fully realized that, the G-Man calls in the favor and points out that his crew will certainly die if he does not risk them in war hunting down the Freeman. It will at least be a little bit less stupid, if not fix pretty much everything.

I’ve decided to write a better story for HDTF cuz why not: Mitchell is still part of HECU, however Adam and Nick are both are HECU too instead of black ops or national guard. The story opens the same way opposing force does, with their osprey being shot down from the sky before they can receive their orders. Mitchell wakes up at around the time of “On a rail” separated from Nick and Adam. Mitchell wanders around for a bit before finding HECU and Scientist corpses killed by the aliens, and finally joins back with Adam and Nick. None of them received their orders, so they all agree to look for survivors and get info on what happened. Unfortunately the first person they find is Gordon. Nick begins to ask Gordon about what happened, but Gordon guns him down, with Mitchell and Adam just barely escaping. Both of them recover and mourn Nick. Adam incorrectly deduces that they’re here to save scientists from the aliens, and wonders why Gordon would kill Nick. Mitchell thinks that the scientists are trying to cover something up, so Adam suggests that they capture and interrogate Gordon. Mitchell disagrees saying they should kill Gordon but goes along with it anyways. Adam tracks Gordon through his HEV suit, and hides out in a room with a charger and medical station. Gordon walks into the room and Mitchell and Adam knock him unconscious(Cutscene from “Apprehension”). Adam wants to take Gordon to the surface to question him, but Mitchell insists that they just kill him. Mitchell eventually convinces Adam that Gordon is a threat and needs to be disposed of, so the two of them throw Gordon into the trash compactor. However before they can ensure Gordon is going to die, more aliens show up and Adam and Mitchell are separated again. Mitchell begins looking for Adam, and finds HECU corpses with bullet wounds, increasing his anger towards Gordon. Mitchell fights through Black Mesa and finds fellow HECU soldiers talking about how Gordon is killing marines. The amount of aliens they begin seeing increases slowly before they start being overrun. Mitchell and his team receive orders to forget about freeman and leave the facility. Mitchell and co begin moving to a evacuation site before being attacked by Gordon again, and kills everyone one by one. As Mitchell lays dying on the ground he does his usual speech of swearing revenge on Gordon, before being knocked out. Mitchell wakes up barely alive and alone, being abandoned. He hears a nuclear siren going off and begins desperately trying to escape Black Mesa. As he finds an exit, the PA system counts down from 10. Mitchell lies down and accepts his fate, but then time stops. G-Man appears and informs him that he is interested in Mitchell’s tenacity and will to survive. G-Man then offers Mitchell a job, saying that he will get to hunt down Freeman. Seeing this as a better alternative to being obliterated in a nuclear explosion, Mitchell accepts and is placed in stasis.

I can't remember where, but isn't there developer commentary in one of the half life 2 episodes where developers talk about newbie designers throwing everything and the kitchen sink into the levels? This game is the definition of that issue. We can't have a pit with a few headcrabs, no, it's gotta be a pit with 30 headcrabs. We can' t have a few combine soldiers blocking your way. It's gotta be a dozen or so, so tightly packed like the designer put them there with a single brush stroke. A few Zombies? Boring! How about 50? There is almost no proper design in the encounters, so the developers just throws in more and more enemies. It reeks of hobbyists first mod to boot. How did this get published? What I really dislike about G-Man's speeches in HDTF, aside of how poorly written they are, is that they're too on the nose. What makes the G-Man terrifying is that he masks any sort of dishonesty and secrecy with various appraisals. He will congratulate you on something without ever elaborating. This speech, on the other hand, is G-Man speech more or less boils down to "your edgy speech was so cool, I just had to approach you after today's debate club." I'm not gonna claim my alternate G-Man monologue is superior in terms of writing, but I feel like this better captures G-Man's character and what makes him such a sinister figure. "Sergeant Mitchell Shepherd... t-teetering on the line between life and death. I would like to congratulate you on surviving such a... cataclysm. Of course, I also mourn the loss of your, heh, brothers... Such tragedy was unavoidable. Your... tenacity was most impressive, even in the face of... e-eradication. It did not go unnoticed by those in... higher places. Though your c-conviction cannot be fulfilled, yet... you will be compensated for your services. Should you accept the position, we will allow you time that otherwise would have been... cut short. Consider it an upfront payment. Otherwise, well... I will leave without much fuss. What bothers me is that G-Man has never really struck me as a planner. He's not some future-predicting chess player who can guess everything that will happen in 20 years time. He's more of an opportunist. He picks up Gordon Freeman and Adrian Shepherd because he sees them survive against the odds and tucks them away for later use. At most, he steps in and tweaks things to make sure Freeman's limited role plays out optimally.
