Would love if DR5 (if it would happen) started with the DR4 ending and zooms out to show Frank West watching it, complaining how Hollywood always ruins the original story just for actions and explosions and all that kind of shit. Ook so my comment was apparently really similar to MarioGMan25’s comment, this is purely a coincidence, i did not see MarioGMan25’s comment before commenting this.

Here, we have Frank West. In Dead Rising, he tried to help any Survivor he came across - injured, drunk, or even maniacal in a few cases. At the very end, after Carlito had died, he wasn't angry at him for releasing the zombie outbreak on Willamette. He was angry because Carlito involved Isabela Keyes, his young sister, in all this. In Dead Rising 4, he ignores people, insults people, and uses people. And some people really have the gall to act like these two versions of Frank West are the same person.

Jesus, Vick may be one of the most poorly written video game characters I've ever seen. So she tricked Frank into breaking into the research facility in the beginning so that she could have good photos for her story, only to then do a complete 180 on Frank for taking pictures and doing nothing about the atrocities - which was PRECISELY what she tricked him into going there for in the first place. Then she abandons his ass at the facility after failing miserably to 'make a difference' and, for no explicable reason, does _yet another 180_ (which makes it a 360, thus bringing her back to her original position) so that her motivation is once again her rivalry with Frank. Not to mention, she straight up backstabs Frank on multiple occasions, makes numerous morally dubious choices and displays characteristics (like just generally being unpleasant and stuffy to the point of obnoxiousness) which should delineate her as a clear-as-day villain in any other story. Do we get any payoff at the end, like seeing her suffer for all the trouble she's caused Frank? Nope, she survives and Frank unfathomably forgives her and they share the glory. She's such a poorly written character that Frank's character actually seems weaker just by being in proximity to her.
@jor41144 жыл бұрын
She reads like she was written by someone who's only passively talked to a self-righteous journalism student, and thought it would be funny if they cranked that person up to 11.
@ejm12254 жыл бұрын
She probably could have been an antagonist in this game. Update: She definitely should have been an antagonist in the game. Update: She really should have been the main antagonist of the game. Just imagine if she were the cause of the Willamette outbreak in order to make a story out of it, and then frame it on Obscuris so that she could expose them and their crimes. And later in the game, she becomes more unhinged to the point of believing in her own lies, and it's up to you, the player, to stop her from spreading her own truth while also stopping the outbreak from spreading across the world. Honestly, the writers really should have explored this part, how corrupt journalists would often twist their lies in their articles to garner more fame, and how delusional they become with their newfound fame and credibility. I mean, Dead Rising focused on consumerism, Dead Rising 2 focused on the drug industry, and Dead Rising 3 focused on corporate involvement in the government. This also would have been a great sendoff to the franchise, exploring the one thing the first game included. But then again, we've already seen what these writers really were.

Frank tries to talk to the guy, asks him what happened while he searches through his toy sack. Pulls out a toy; it's a Frank West Action Figure. I think my idea for a Mall Santa boss fight would be more of a slow burn, kinda like the Cult Leader from DR1 or the deranged singer from DR2. Like, maybe he'd be in charge of a safehouse that's basically the walled off Christmas Village within the mall, with his elves as guards and maybe rescuing other survivors. And maybe at first, he keeps up the Santa persona as both a coping mechanism for himself, but also to boost morale of the other survivors. But then overtime he starts to loose himself in the role and becomes more tyrannical, being judge, jury and executioner to the "naughty" survivors, and the Christmas Village goes full "Lord of the Flies" mode until Frank can take out the delusional Santa.

One way I'd describe this is, "Wasted potential." The Christmas setting had lots of potential for some truly heart breaking and tragic psychopaths and survivors. It's supposed to be a happy time for everyone and it's all ruined by this massive tragedy. But no, we get a game apparently written by someone who had no idea what Frank and the series as a whole was all about, and designed by people who specialize in dumbing down elements over expanding them.
@RevorDragon7 жыл бұрын
Richter Matthias Wow, you're right. I loved the stories behind the survivors and psychopaths in dead rising one and even 2. 3 killed the whole saving survivor s thing by replacing half of them with generic people who run off and are never seen again, and the other half, while you can actually get them to follow you around and help, I never did after I saved them because it was easier just to go alone. I miss the notebook that had all the info on people you met. also, it feels like the games got progressivly more unrealist and silly, in a bad way. like the crazy wepons combos or welding two cars together in like 5 seconds. but not just that, how the characters acted too. the survivors in one usually acted like they just witnessed some horrific tragedy, but they could still be fun and goffy on the side. same with the pyschopaths. the moves they did in battles were over the top but that's ok. they alsi got rid of a main safehouse where everyone you saved would stay. and there was like ONE sad moment in 3 with the old lady and that was it. they had the tragic ends you could find and they tried to play sad music over them, but then at the same time there would be some snarky pun onscreen too so idk how they wanted you to feel then. I haven't played 4 yet but I can only imagine it's a thousand times worse. I probably made like a million spelling and grammar mistakes but I'll fix them later because I'm half asleep.
@retrogamelover20125 жыл бұрын
Yeah. I mean, there could've also been an interesting spin on the veteran psycho boss in the first game, too. Like for instance, the idea of having one psycho be an old WW2 vet, who originally was going to have Christmas dinner with the family. But, when the zombies happened, his PTSD and eventual senile induced insanity caused him to start gunning down anyone in his territory, thinking that they were Nazis. Also, along with probably having the guy use something similar to the Blitzkreig in prior games for the boss battle, he could also lob grenades to not only broaden the moveset, but also kind of set-up for a subversion of expectations. For, I could imagine the scene when you beat him being him pretending like he's coming back to his senses, and as the player tries to embrace him, he pulls out a grenade he was hiding in his jacket with the ring taken off in an attempt to blow the player up along with him, and starts cackling, saying something like; "Oh, you Nazis are all so predictable. And you all wonder why your precious Furher is losing this war, eh?", before the player escapes seconds before the grenade detonates.

I think Vick could’ve worked as a semi-antagonist to Frank if the game was written more competently. Like, okay. Have Vick look up to Frank and respect him as a journalist but still trick him into investigating the facility, frank says he’s out of the game but Vick convinces him, they uncover the secrets and the semi-zombie patients which angers Vick like in the game, She’s young, impulsive and easily swayed by her emotions because she’s just a student with no real experience, so she puts the zombie lady down and does some more impulsive reckless shit which frank admonishes her for, telling her (like he does in DR4) that they’re journalists, they get the news out there and report but this further angers Vick, she feels betrayed by Frank and sees him as a hypocrite because as she sees it, he totally got involved with events and actively did shit in the events of DR1 and DR2: Case West. This would lead her to disappearing and Frank, seeing it as his responsibility, goes to get her out safely but this ends up with him having to figure out and solve the conspiracy as well. Throughout the game, have Vic basically try and do Frank-like things, like she gets a safe house and tries to rescue people but because she’s so emotionally invested in saving people she lets in some people that turn and gets all of those survivors killed except for her since she escapes. Have her do something reckless that pushes someone over the edge creating a psychopath that could have been saved if not for Vick messing it up, have her intentionally destroy evidence just to screw with Frank because she believes all he cares about is the story and fame. Then, much later in the story Frank would confront Vick but at this point she’s basically broken, she tries her hardest to do the right thing (In her mind) but she keeps messing things up, she gets people hurt, she ruins any chance of the truth getting out and at this point in the story, she feels like all her are gone and the story is lost. it’s too much for her and she’s genuinely remorseful for her actions. Frank sympathises with her but ultimately tells her that she needs to own up to her mistakes and that the only way that either of them can get out alive is to work together, so for the rest of the game, Frank and Vick bond, she opens up about herself to him and Frank teaches her the lessons he’s learnt himself over the DR games as well as just general life stuff. Vick becomes more capable and they even manage to find more evidence that could expose the truth together. Now then, this culminates with the ending and what would be overtime mode. The chopper scene happens but instead of Frank falling, it’s Vick. Now we play as Vick instead, she’s plays like a more basic Frank with a few basic skills unlocked but we get to see the newer side of Vick first hand, we see a scene of survivors trying to escape zombies and instead of rushing in, Vick calms herself down and thinks through the situation and actually manages (albeit with difficulty) to save the survivors, she then goes on to help some other people, find out an important clue using the things Frank taught her and meet back up with Frank and together they best the final bad guy, get the truth out there and ultimately survive. Frank comes out of it realising he can’t keep running away and that he needs to keep exposing the truth about all these events and Vick comes out as a more matured journalist, weathered by the storm of the outbreak and a lot of near death but ultimately following in Frank’s footsteps of journalism and together they’re gonna get the truth out regardless of who wants to stop them. Him trying to laugh away the pain, and act as the zombie killing quipping main character seen in movies. But slowly throughout the game that facade fades revealing what Frank really is before slowly regaining some of his facilities and old personality as the zombie invasion, and being back in the mall again works as important exposure therapy to help him recover.

I just want to point out to people that removing the timer doesn't just make the game easier, it fundamentally changes the gameplay formula. The timer was integral in the first game, not just "hard mode"
@velocilevon3 жыл бұрын
Without the time limit, Dead Rising loses like 90% of its challenge. The only reason bosses can be scary is because if you underprepare, you'll be put in a dilemma: do you risk fighting him as you're right now and risk getting annihilated and losing lots of progress, or do you go back and lose lots of time, which will probably cost you some scoops, but at least that'll secure you a guaranteed victory? Now you can just leave at any time, what stops you, lol? Zombies will definitely become less of a problem. Time limit and zombies synergise extremely well, too well actually, they're practically inseparable: without the former, you can take the safest and longest routes, you can take as much time as you want taking zombies out safely, you can still rush through them and tank some hits, except you can go into any nearby area where the healing items are and restore yourself, because once again, you have no reason to hurry. Map exploration wouldn't be as rewarding: it's not only about finding useful items and weapons, it's also learning the layout in order to know the most optimal routes and when to take them. Escorting survivors would become a complete pushover. You'd have no reason to put them in serious harm's way.
@oddmanout86923 жыл бұрын
@@velocilevon Is it possible to find a middle ground? It seems like with the timer it's a lose-lose scenario. You either lose progress or scoops.
@velocilevon3 жыл бұрын
@@oddmanout8692 There's definitely a middle ground, it's entirely possible to complete everything in time. I'm maybe just a tiny bit more skilled than an average player, but even with multiple screw ups I can still kill the bosses and also rescue the survivors I need (there are some that are way too much pain in the ass to save for a not great reward, so I skip some of them). There will still be some free time to do other silly stuff before the next case begins. I was just making an example. Time limit is well designed in DR 1 and 2 (and OTR too).

in the Sandbox mode in Dead Rising 2 Off The Record, there is no time limit and tbh, i got so bored after an hour of just running around and killing zombies. The time limit makes the game a lot better imo as it keeps you focused.

@@velocilevon If anything the only change that you could totally make to the timer is give the player a tiny bit more time, not a ton more but enough for new players to handle it easier and not too much more to where legacy players feel like it's too easy. Near 43:30 you mention how random goons can kill a boss for you. Thing is that in the original Dead Rising, boss fights have a failsafe AGAINST this for the couple of occasions you actually have an ally with you. Incredible how a game from 12 years ago based on a failed Gladiator beat 'em up manages to solve an issue that would only become apparent a decade down the line.

Dead Rising 2 was really good and I had quite a lot of fun in it especially with the co-op mode and they even took the extra length and added a multiplayer that got you money for your single play/coop playthrough. They didn't have to add multiplayer, but they did anyways and it was pretty silly fun for a bit. The third game....I really disliked for the most part. Finished it really fast for a Dead Rising game and was just really boring (might be because I prefer the vibrant colors and tone of the first two games). The Dead Rising 4....I played not even half of the game and just quit. Was not a lot of fun and those damn camera sections got me very pissed off. Plus not co-op was a huge disappointment and a terrible multiplayer just couldn't save the game. And can we talk about the fact they are trying to sell us at $10 mini golf mode?! You can really tell this game started as a darker, more adult-oriented story, but then partway through they opted to make it way more goofy and kiddie. So you have dark characters like Tom and Calder, but everything else is totally zany and dumbed-down. You can find concept art of the Evo Zombies where they originally looked WAY more gruesome and scary, and I'm sure they toned that down (made them look way blander) when they decided to focus on a younger audience. There's also a line about the Santa guy, saying that he's eviscerated a bunch of people and stuffed their corpses full of presents... but in some copies of the game, that line is removed. That really shows that the developers started out dark, then changed their minds partway through production.

Though since there is a dlc where Frank turns into a zombie, you can twist the ending around to how they purposely left him there to die/sabotagued his placement on the helicopter or something).

The animated intro of DR4 has a perfect horror tone that could've made this outbreak the most tragic one of the series due to the Christmas theme, and they wasted it.

I was mainly doing stability checks on entire game and I remember that I was able to finish games twice per 8h workday, Most of bugs we reported were put to "we eventualy maybe fix it someday" bucket. It was a disaster.

I've said it before, and I'll say it here - Capcom hit their zombie zenith with Off the Record. Not only did it keep good old fashioned TJ Rotolo non-jerk Frank West, but it had a sandbox mode that was actually really fun. It had pro-wrestling moves, it didn't have any power armor, and the camera actually felt...it wasn't GREAT, but it was a lot more fun then this slog.

I'd say it was the last great Dead Rising game. It did everything extremely well with fixing the minor issues from DR2. Like it was a direct thank you to the fans cause they acknowledged what didn't work from 2 and fixed it. TIR Multi-player was axed in favor of Sandbox Mode, which was an improved Infinite Mode

I've only played Off the Record, but damn Frank is incredibly mischaacterized. I never saw Frank as a cold hearted asshole, at least in OtR he was pretty level headed. I never saw him obsessed with killing zombies, it was just something he had to do. This Frank is just a shitty knockoff Nathan Drake wannabe.

Yeah, that's the problem with Dead Rising 4. Even if they did try in some places (I mean, despite the whole heavy-handedness with Frank's character, I still like the idea of a guy trying to channel Bruce Campbell in the Evil Dead franchise.) it still ends up coming off as rather bland and unengaging at best and at worst, a focus-tested mess of a disservice to what the Dead Rising series stood for, and probably another reminder of how unhealthy of a method this Triple A market is using, when sustaining a respectable entertainment industry. And usually having different people produce the game wouldn't bother me (I mean look at the shift in devs between DR1 and 2.), but the problem lies in the direction they were given, since when Blue Castle games were put in charge of DR2, they had some of the original devs supervise them on how they should go at things so they don't fuck it up, considering how their previous work involved a bunch of baseball games

I want there to be a Dead Rising 5 that takes place directly after Dead Rising 4's Frank Rising Ending shot, where it zooms out to reveal that it was all on a movie set, with a movie being made about the real frank West and his real adventures. The Frank on Dead Rising 4 was an actor, while the Real Frank voiced by T.J Rotolo is over seeing the production of the movie and calls it crap, walks out of the studio and the game begins.

The voice actor for Frank sounds like he's trying to be a cut-rate John DiMaggio reading off lines written by a cut-rate Joss Whedon, and is also trying to outshine Bruce Campbell in the one liners department. It's painful....

DR4 feels like a typical case of modern capcom overmilking a game with market research amounting to "hey people like Frank and he's a meme, our DR2 remake with Frank sold decent, and the prologue and epilogue too, so let's make a frank game" and tasked a team with like a 6 month deadline. As such, they had to hurriedly play mix&match with script scraps and try to play out "Frank lost his mind" or something. I sometimes think Dead Rising 4 is a patchwork of various game ideas, including DR spin-offs "projects" that were thrown in a blender because Capcom's management and business decisions are sometimes just absurd. And if DR4 and its expansions bombed, you can rest safely. If a game does not sell enough, be it good or bad doesn't matter. Capcom will axe even an underselling good game. Instead, they'll release RE remasters and Street Fighter seasons and anniversary compilations forever and will stop caring, if they ever did.

I remember Rebeecca Chang as a crazed survivor in Sandbox mode in Dead Rising 2: Off the Record was difficult because she ran around using an LMG. I used the same method that was used to defeat the Cult Leader by just hiding in a resturant nearby and waited for zombies to grapple her to death while she stared at me through a wall.

So, basically Dead Rising made the same mistake Saints Row did. Misunderstanding what made the first games great and just focusing on the wrong thing + going over the top too hard.
@TimedRevolver6 жыл бұрын
...Saint's Row started as a generic GTA clone. And not a very good one. It didn't suddenly get over the top. It gradually went that road, and it made sense in a world that idolizes gangs like them. I don't understand the hate DR4 gets. It got rid of time limits (which I hate) and kept everything else. So what if Frank looks different? It's clearly a different engine, so they couldn't use the same models. It's like people whining that Chris Redfield doesn't look roided out in Resident Evil 7. The engine uses realistic models, so he looks normal. That's all this is. They tried something new. Sure they stumbled, but the effort is there. Still people whine. And yet, if they'd kept it like the old games, people would whine that Capcom's not innovating or changing anything. Everyone wants something new, but whine about it being different when new shows up. Then they wonder why nobody does anything new and just rehash older stuff.
@screamybingus7076 жыл бұрын
Timed Revolver "It god rid of the time limits (which I hate)" Well, good to know that only YOUR enjoyment matters, that YOUR opinion determines that of the whole community. YOU hated the time limit. Many fans, like me, liked it. But fuck us and our shitty opinions, right? "and kept everything else" Really? Like what? Engaging boss fights? Competent writing? Gameplay depth? Not vomit-inducing graphics? Comedic balance? Lmao they threw out pretty much every single defining feature of the franchise (save for zombies and survivors, but without those two the game would've had literally fucking nothing in it), and put out an on-the-surface idea of what they thought the franchise was all about all these years. "So what if Frank looks different?" Looks, sounds and acts nothing like any of his previous portrayals. They could've just gone for a new character altogether, and nobody would bat an eye. But they just had to double down on their "#frankisback fellow kids, amirite??!!!?!" bullshit. "It's clearly a different engine" Forge Engine, same one used in DR3. And in one of its DLCs Frank looks and sounds exactly like he did before. But nice strawman. "They tried something new" You mean ripping off every single fucking open world game on the market for the past 10 years? Is it called "trying something new" now? "Still people whine" Maybe because literally no one (aside from at best two dozen wimps like yourself) asked for any of these changes? The fans asked for a return to the roots of the first two games after the watered down DR3, and while two Canadian cucks were bullshitting people into actually doing that, we ended up with an even more watered down version of already watered down game. "If they'd kept it like the old games, people would whine..." See above. "Everyone wants something new..." Stop speaking for everyone. You don't speak for everyone. People already tried pushing this stupid narrative that "nobody ever liked the first game, wish they would remove the timer/make it easier/give me cheats out from the start, then I'd buy it". We know how that ended up: the game got mediocre reviews, sold like shit, two Canadian cucks left the studio, lots of people got fired, their next game cancelled, next DR cut in scope (thank god). All because the devs listened and catered to a loud minority and not their established fanbase. So yeah, good on YOU for enjoying it. Please stop berating others for having standards.
@TimedRevolver6 жыл бұрын
alienpsycho The pure fact that you use the word cucks completely invalidates any points you had, honestly. Because now you sound like some college frat jackass who wants people to think he's tough and edgy by using words he clearly doesn't know the actual definition of. Or, to quote Princess Bride: "You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means." Princess Bride is a movie based on a book, by the way. You know, those things that people who are smarter than you look at.

One thing I want to point out is that I found a time-sensitive mission. In the farm, one of the men gives me a mission to find his friend, you go to the location, find that the guy's dead, kill some goons, take a picture of the body and go back to the guy who gave you the mission. It was so short that it took about a minute.

This video is 4 years old at this point but I just wanted to talk about my experience I did compatibility testing for Microsoft on the Xbox One X, our job was to make sure every game in the library ran faster or equally to the original Xbox One. Dead Rising 4 was the first game I had to end to end test and it was the worst testing experience I've ever had lmao I found like 15 bugs in the first dream sequence alone and for each bug I had to reproduce them 10 times each so I did that intro over 100 times. They also had me write a bug because multiplayer took a long time to find a match, it wasn't broken just no one was playing so again 10 reproductions on the bug and it took 15+ mins to find a match so I would just watch movies while doing that lol fuck Dead Rising 4

The only problems I had was with Frank and the bosses/psychos. What happened to Frank's nose?! He had a big goofy nose and a beefy build, now he's all skinny and lost like 50 pounds! Also, the bosses where bland. The ones in the previous games where super idealized, creepy and unsettling, the ones in this game are just kinda "there". They didn't even get special cut scenes or fun death animations, they just died like all the zombies.
