You need to strap a small strobe light on your tripod to make it easier to find your setup in the dark. They make small lights for scuba diving at night so divers can keep track of each other

@@IMPACTSHOOTING Scuba strobes can be pretty weak in terms of brightness. You can get strobes that wouldn't be rated for being underwater but that are much much brighter. Bit bigger for carrying around though.

I've done some game recovery alone in the pitch black deep in wolf country with nothing but my phone to light me, and dragging a deer the 2km through deep forest had me spooked to no end. I imagine I'd be shitting myself if I were to pull a similar stunt with big cats around. xD

I had wondered about recovering game with large predators and scavengers about. We have a small population of black bears and the occasional cougar in my part of the US. But it's just not common concern here. Do you ever encounter wild dogs?
@1234tommmm2 ай бұрын
African Wild dogs (cape subspecies) are an endangered species and will be very rare. As far as I know you will mostly find them in reserves like Kruger it is unlikely that anyone with wild dogs will allow hunting in the vicinity as we compete basically for the same food sources. Hyenas generally do not attack humans. They tend to be weary, similarly cheetahs are afraid of humans for the most part (they see children as prey quite often). If you leave a dead animal alone for upwards of 4 hours you may get Hyenas and Jackal come in for a snack (even vultures but they rare due to poison). The predators learn what a gunshot means and have very good smell. Leopards is another story, they avoid humans mostly, but if cornered or wounded are deadly. Rooikat will also come and snack on a killed animal. We had a case where a shot gemsbok in the Karoo was lying in daylight for a few hours and the Rooikat had some a bit of surprise as there where eyes on the Gemsbok for the most part. There are exceptions when the animal is sick or wounded and can't hunt normally, same thing happens with mountain lions. Cubs nearby a similar story. For the most part predators in Africa will avoid humans. Puffadder is a notable exception it ambushes and likes to lie in foot paths. Winter months when most people hunt they tend to be quite inactive. Things like Buffalo and Hippos tend to be more dangerous than lions at times as they have bad tempers. Elephants can also be dangerous tend to be bulls in must but make no mistake an upset elephant will kill. Rhinos I have found to be more placid and skittish. I suspect in many cases people accidently get overrun. Buffs will gore and trample and stick around. If I recall correctly Hippos kill more people than any other animal.
