That was awesome! "What happened?" Thought the same thing, he wore that arrow. DIY hunting, the only way to go. Love the trend in hunting shows these days. You guys are ambassadors for the average hunter, we're not in it for the kill but for the hunt and the meat. All my hunting here in western Wisconsin is on public, with my first OTC Colorado elk hunt planned for this fall.

@@Slider6294 hey man, up in the Polk County area. There's better areas a ways south though if you're open to travel. Swamps and thick areas work best for me. Typically either really big and you can stretch out and find a spot away from people. Or really small and its over looked. I've had better luck with small out of fhe way spots. And you can speed scout through a bunch in a short period of time.

@@KDOGGER11 How ironic--I spend some time up in Iron River! Never hunted up there. My deer hunting was always around Shawano, at least growing up. Like Randy, I prefer public land but it can be challenging when you're not in the West.

I really like your reverence for the animals and your ethics. I was a Game Warden for NM and know a bit about ethics and the lack thereof. I would have loved meeting you "back in the day" I am 74 and My dad planted the elk in the Gila in the 40's. He was a warden for 39 years. L.A."Bear" Turner. Thanks so much, Fred. I tell my wife that if ever she tires of me and my hunting, she can forward my mail to Catron County. You live in a remarkable place. So many cool stories. I would love to know more about how the elk were planted in the Gila, as it would be cool to follow from the time Merriam's elk existed, were then extirpated, then replaced with the Rocky Mountain Elk you now have. What do you feed the pronghorn in that part of the world? I chase pronghorn every chance I get, but out on the Plains, the size of pronghorn is amazing. Thanks for reaching out. Thanks for your service to wildlife. Best of luck in 2018.

The main reason these elk stay out in the wide-open in hot weather is because of the flies, the flies can't take the wind or the hot sun very long. In Mo. even the deer tend to move out of the timber and into the open when the flies get real bad.

Wow, absolutely unreal! What an amazing hunt. I wonder, what do you do with the tag when you have to haul out multiple loads? Do you keep it with you at all times or do you leave it with the meat hanging in case someone finds it?
@Fresh_Tracks
@Fresh_Tracks 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks. That depends on the state. They all have different rules. Most say to keep it with the majority of the meat. That means keeping it with the hanging meat during the first load, and when close to the last loads, have it with the meat at the trailhead. My default is to keep it with one of the hind quarters. I've hauled dozens of elk in pieces and never had an issue.

In utah, we keep it with the largest portion of meat. To have less problems i'll hike out a hind quarter and choice cuts with the tag on it for my first load. That way if i'm contacted at the truck by a conservation officer, he can see it then. If he's in the field on the last load, i'd rather have him go with me to the truck to show it to him. either way you'll keep the other end of the tag with you.
@troywesterbur706

@@slcduckin I have always attached the carcass tag to an antler. I hual out the most meat and prime cuts first. With the head. Then keep the stub on me for the rest of the pack. I have been checked and that was ok for them. But dont forget to sign your tag. In Colorado I have had them tell me that they could have given me a ticket for not signing it. The only time that happened I hadn't gotten anything yet. He told me if i had he would have ticketed me.

Its 70 degrees out I'm at full draw on my front deck, I decide to too hot to deal with a deer that big by myself, and don't shoot. One friendly 14-16 point. Was in no hurry when it saw me. These elk are very transient. Look for the benches with the greenest grass and that is where the cows will be. The bulls will not be far away. There are lots of man-made water sources scattered throughout, so the grass is probably a bigger attractor. Don't be afraid to move. Be very mobile. I've seen bulls five miles from where I saw them just twelve hours prior. Good luck.

Randy- it looks like a drone was used for filming some of this. Though it makes for cool shots (and I am certain that it wasn't used as an aid in hunting based on listening to your podcast and watching your videos), were/are you concerned about getting grief for this?
@Fresh_Tracks

That was filmed pre-drone days. It was filmed with a helicopter with a huge lens. I did not have to pay for it, rather traded the footage/filming from that helicopter for some other services. That chopper and the $500K camera cost way more than my little production could afford.

At first I thought it might have been a helicopter but figured that it would have been a bit too costly. Must have been pretty cool, though! Great hunt and elk, by the way. I really enjoy your videos and podcast.

Does the sweating and elevation of body temperature make it hard to hunt

Yes, it complicates it. Easy to get dehydrated.

What unit is this Randy?

+David Dole - We have a policy of not telling people where we hunt, as it would negatively impact others who apply there. Hopefully it is suffice to say, Catron County, NM. Good luck this year.

+Randy Newberg, Hunter not a problem at all, I understand. I'm almost positive I know which unit it is, I was just curious. I was actually looking at land down in Catron County for a camping landing for possible elk hunting. We are shooting for Gila wilderness this year though. Best of luck to you this year.

Out of respect to other hunters who apply or hunt in those units, we don't give units of where we hunt. Hope that makes sense.

I really like your videos. But what I really like is your ethical attitude. I taught bow hunting for the state of Montana 22 years ago and that is what we stressed. I get upset nowadays with these bow hunting shows and people are taking 80 to 90 yard shots. So much can go wrong in that distance and you can lose that animal if you wound it. Just want to say thanks again for your great videos. I'll keep watching.

I saw that as well. Replayed it several times, and that's an arrow bouncing around. Someone is not telling the whole story....

What unit do you hunt in Arizona?
@Fresh_Tracks

This was New Mexico. Out of courtesy to other hunters who might apply for tags in units we hunt, we do not give out the units we hunt in. I hope you understand why. Thanks for watching and best of luck this season.
