consider Talley rings. they bolt directly to the receiver. lighter weight,cleaner and allows lower scope mounting. I removed the bolt and polished it with Flitz. it's now the smoothing cycling bolt gun i've felt. I went with the American Ranch in 300blk,similar ballistics to 30-30,short 16" threaded barrel,uses ar15 mags,very quite on the ears(unsuppressed) because of the small powder capacity of the case. I mounted a leupold 2.5x(5.5oz scope) in talley low rings. the rifle weighs 6.25lb empty. very nice short,handy deer/hog/coyote rifle out to 250yd or so.
@CaptainBerz3 жыл бұрын
Nope. These are aluminum, so already light. Lighter wasn't my complaint, just the height. Which means I just need to get lower rings. Just did not want to spend the money, so dealing with what I got. I've trusted my life with Badger, I will trust my hunts with Badger. Haha. I do like that Talley is made in the USA though! That is a great setup you got there!

Did the same to my ruger ranch 450BM bolt with some lapping compound in the receiver and adhesive lapping microfinishing film paper on a wooden dowel and it’s smooth as silk now. I also just bought the ruger American tactical which is 308 win with 16” heavy barrel and Magpul stock and will be doing the same treatment you did to it with talleys and Boyd’s stock like Berz.

Curious that you said that you got rid of a model 70 due to the bolt and then bought a Ruger American. They are good guns but the stock and the bolt are the weakest part of the gun. We can hear the grind when you rack it. It a great looking gun and I’m sure it will shoot well, but it’s hard for me to believe the 70s bolt was worse.

Love it dude! Hunting rifles depending on what spot im at. One spot ill take my ole Marlin 336 in 35 Remington. That has a leupold 1.5-4 with a custom ballistic turret. Shoot 200 grain core-lokt. Longer range spots ill Use my Tikka T3x in 25-06(most underated do all caliber). Droped it in a Bell and Carlson sporter stock. That I use 110 grain Hornaday Eld-x precision hunter. That projectile is screaming at about 3100 fps and I get about 18" of drop at 400 yards. Ive found that shooting from tree stands at longer ranges and at different "arcs" and angles the faster, flatter shooting calibers give me a higher percentage of getting that heart money shot with less math. Wind plays with it less also and recoil is minimal. I will also be using that exact scope this year.

CaptainBerz, Nice set up for Hunting. Agreed Wood makes a hunting rifle look better. I used to Deer Hunt with my Dad’s .303 Rifle. We used to use Imperial Shells (Canadian Brand) 180 grain. One year I found a store that had a whole pile of the Ammunition we used, So I bought it all. I came home with 4 bags of it. My Dad asked why so much? I told him it was on Sale it’s what we use so I bought it all. Since I no longer hunt I gave my Rifle and my Winchester Lever Rifle to my Godson. Great discussion. Two seasons ago, I hunted with my Mossberg MVP LR 308. I have a Patriot that I have not taken hunting but I put in an MDT chassis. At that time, Boyd's was not making a stock for Patriot SA with action screws 4.71 inches apart. So, I got a chassis. Now, Boyd makes those. Last season, I hunted with the TC Compass II .308 W in the factory plastic stock and it would average around 1/2 MOA and I put on a muzzle brake. A Falcon Strike recoil pad. And some cheek pad from Goda Grip and then some craft foam and vet tape to raise the cheek. But I really like chassis and I contacted MDT and the pointed to their subsidiary, Oryx. A bit less expensive and I am glad I got one. LOP is good with a Pachmyr Decelerator (Falcon Strike, the premier company for hydraulic recoil pads, does not make one for the butt stocks on these chassis.) Of course, adjustable cheek. Once I set that, I don't need to change it. And the Oryx has a scoop designed to allow removing the bolt with out undoing other adjustments.) So, yeah, choose what is comfortable for you. As for accuracy, I have been averaging .5 MOA with Federal Fusion 165 gr.

I use the Federal and Winchester 180 grain loads. Prints sub MOA! I harvested a big bodied pennsylvania eight point with it. Completely pass through and took out both lungs. The buck stumbled thirty yards to his death bed. Getting it ready for this season started in Feb. I upgraded to a Boyd's stock.. it's the forest camo laminate. Also.. installed a Glade's tactical bolt handle with knob. I love the looks of her now! Not sure the deer will like it any more than this past season though :)

*pre 64 And since 2007 the model 70s have gone back to controlled round feed like the old ones were. But even the push feed model 70s i own have nothing at all wrong with their bolt. That’s really neither here nor there though since the Ruger American is push feed anyway. So how’s its bolt better than the model 70? I like the Ruger American a whole bunch for a budget Rifle, but come on… better than the Model 70? Agree to disagree on that one.

Nice tutorial on your Ruger American rifle, looks really nice. I also had a Winchester model 70 chambered in 30-06 that I also sold. That was the most inconsistent rifle I ever owned. My first hunting rifle was a Marlin 1894 chambered in .44 I still hunt with that rifle using Hornady custom hollow point I find they are better with brush and pack a accurate punch compared to the polymer tipped Lever revolution. I recently purchased from GunBroker a 1979 Marlin 336 chambered in 30-30 for my new hunting rifle. And might I add that Marlin 336 rifle is a can’t miss tack! driver!! 50 yards out to 120 yards using Winchester Super X soft point 150 grain box ammo. I’m Deer hunting upstate New York woods so most shots are within 50 to 60 yards. I’m also interested in finding a 308 bolt rifle with a 16” to 18” barrel that will be easy to walk the woods with.

I recently bought a Bergara Wilderness Hunter in 6.5 Creedmore that I’m going to try this year on northern MI whitetail. Put a Primary Arms 3-18 with ACSS Apollo 6.5 reticle on it. The scope is more on the budget side but after using a PA 1-6 LPVO on one of my AR’s and loving it, i figured I’d give it a shot. Haven’t had a chance to break/sight in yet but I have a couple boxes of different hunting ammo from Remington, Barnes, and Hornady. I’ve been using a beautiful Rem 700 lightweight in 7mm-08 since the early 90’s and it’s been a great rifle but accuracy is a little lackluster. I hunt on a big private farm where it is possible to take shots out to 400-500 yards so I wanted to extend the range a bit. With my old Rem 700 I was never comfortable taking an ethical shot past 250 yards. We’ll see how it goes.

Great review, how’s the inletting on your Boyd’s stock as far as fit?, are there any gaps between the metal and the wood? I had a bad experience with my Ruger Hawkeye stock from Boyd’s (The AT one stock) , it had a lot of gaps and poor craftsmanship in the receiver area. I ended up sending it back and got a new stock, but with just as bad fit issues. Yours looks amazing! I now have a 308 Ruger Scout rifle with a 18.7 inch barrel. It is by far my favorite hunting rifle. I have a 2-7 leupold fire-dot scope mounted on it. I thought the firedot was a little excessive, but ounce I hunted with it, I was in love. It really draws your eye in and gives you a nice aiming point especially on pigs. I hunt with any 180 grain soft point mainly because the rifle shoots routinely ~1 MOA with them. I haven’t lost any game yet Deer, pigs, cow….yes cows, I’ve had to put down a few. I love the adjustable length of pull, light weight, and quick handling when climbing up, in and out of blinds, trucks, ATVs, and brush. It’s just a great set-up. I’ve got at least a half dozen Ruger Americans, Predators, Ranches………..they all shoot rather well, can’t complain and are great for what they are. Cheap, plastic, disposable turds! And, still American built. So, there’s that. However, trying to shine one up with a new stock, new bolt handle, new trigger ( me, not you) let’s be honest the Ruger knockoff Accu-trigger trigger sucks, is trying to turn a sows ear into silk purse. Better off just buying a Tikka, you’ll have nearly as much in the Ruger “project” before it’s all said and done! And the action still won’t be as nearly nice as the Tikka and the Tikkas has far superior magazines if you handload. IMO.🇺🇸

16inch 6.5 Grendel carbine length gas ar platform 3-9×40 Barska scope. Hornady SST ammo. Its a left over parts upper, non freefloat m4 handguard, cheap BCA barrel, and shoots about 2 moa. It works for m3 its light, and i have less than $300 in the upper. I dropped a large 6 point at 80 yards with it last year here in Kansas.

Nobody in their right fucking mind would sell a model 70 feather weight, I have the same exact rifle with a old ass weaver scope, I can touch 3 shots with a quarter at 100 yards, I just can’t Phantom nor justify trading it in for a ruger American I have had the 450 bushmaster in ruger American yes it was accurate, but it didn’t stand a chance when it came to the model 70, just blows my mind, that’s just my opinion
