0:47:40 Sub-launched SAMs are akin to derringers. A last chance weapon. On the other hand, knowing that - say - German subs MIGHT carry underwater launched Iris-T missiles WILL make Kamov crews nervous, a tad less eager to go closer and dip their sonars...

Larry Bond used this in his Korean War (2nd) novel “Red Phoenix”, with a KiloSS and a P-3 killing each other.

14:00 There is the factor, that submarines had a limited detection range (von Trapp standing on the top of the sail of U-14 has a far smaller horizont than your average surface ship with a crow's nest on the mast), so odds were, that they did not even encountered convoys, unescorted or not.

My old job...SH-2F and SH-60F Sensor operator. Operated RADAR, SONAR, MAD, Acoustic Processor(s) and FLIR. In addition I was also on Mk. 46/50 Torpedo load team(s). One of the first warfare disciplines that was highly scientific from the very beginning.

@karlvongazenberg8398 If you have an ASW aircraft on scene; why are you calling in a strike from land?

@@WALTERBROADDUS " If you have an ASW aircraft on scene;" yes, but do you have torpedoes left or even had any torps to begin with? Say, your standard aircraft loadout is 200 buoys and two torps. Having a land based, long range ASW strike capability allows you to load 300 buoys AND half a ton more fuel for a patrol. An option, which you can chooose - IF you have the capability.

0:11:40 Drone price vs interceptor missile price... True, that from the inventory the local commander has, it worths, even it is "a must" to launch even a multi million dollar Aster or Standrd missile to protect that tanker. But that is "tactical" level. On a "strategic" level one has to equip ANOTHER, multi layered defense against drones, be them UAVs or USVs, ie develop and load (up to) long range, cheapish missiles to kill drones. It might even be a "drone" itself, like a Hero-120 or Lancet against drones like the Geran and Shahed families as well as those exploding jetskis. Fortunately, they wont come with a multi-million dollar (euro, GBP, not even ruble) price tag, take up less deck space, with manually reloadable launchers, but yet another system warships must carry around and more importantly more functions your air (and surface) search sensors must be able to do.

Sorry but have to disagree. That tanker is not a tactical resource, its a strategic resource. How many missiles can you buy with the cost of replacing the tanker and its cargo of oil, or worse, refined fuel? How many missiles will that cargo ship laden with rare metals build? And its not only a raw ship and cargo cost if you lose a merchant ship. How long will it take to build the replacement? Until you have that replacement built you are down a merchant ship, so how many trips could that cargo ship or tanker have made if you had fired the interceptor missile? A sunk ship is not only losing you the cargo it is currently carrying, it is removing the ability for it to carry cargo in the future, so you are not only losing current cargo capacity, you are losing future cargo capacity. At least until the ship is replaced. If you lose say a tanker, and it takes an arbitrary six months to build a new replacement, lets say the tanker makes one trip per month, that's six future loads of fuel or oil you are not able to move because of the loss of that tanker. These days that is HUGE. I mean look at the SIZE of modern tankers. The smallest, and most common are Aframax Tankers that have a capacity of 80 - 120,00 deadweight tonnes. Thats between 500 and 800,000 barrels of oil they can carry. Thats 79.5 to 127.2 million litres of oil. For money, thats between 39.5 and 55.2 million USD per full load. And thats for a SMALL Tanker, carrying crude oil. People forget these days I think, just how BIG modern tankers and bulk cargo ships actually are, and how much stuff they can, and do carry.... So yeah, I think that for any situation, tactically or Strategically its worth a couple of interceptor missiles to save a Tanker especially.

@@alganhar1 "Sorry but have to disagree. That tanker is not a tactical resource, " Actually , you haven't. When you have only multi-million dollar missiles, you launch those. Untill you have the other methods, at which point you still might opt for the more expensive solution, but WAY better equipped for a saturation attack.

Q: Given that Wiki list even the 13 ton CB90 to be able to be equippend with deph charges and kartell "substance" submersibles ARE a thing as well as unmanned underwater vessels... You need to sanitise even your "brown waters". And then those German quad-packed Iris-T missiles suddenly get new areas of use.

They need patience and endurance. Which might involve large size or large numbers. If large size they need speed.

1970s-90s my day job was USN SWO ASW specialty. That was an interesting time for ASW with ~500 Soviet subs to play with, but the China problem today is also interesting. Your 60% solution today has to lie in the drone technology currently being developed in both surface and subsurface platforms. A drone to replace ASW helos is needed, and an update of the ARAPAHO concept is also needed.

No but if/when successive UK governments refuse to support and indeed degrade the terms and conditions of employment for their service personnel to the point when only a tiny proportion of the population would consider a military career it's really not surprising that so few ships are being built

Of course the dog is going to get a bed, water bowl and biscuts when going to archives. You sound surprised. You do realise a lot of those working there are animal crazy and let's not forget all the war hero animals. Downing street has the cheef mouser and there are alot of public institutions that have cat or dog personel on roster. As a dog dad you ought to know such things.
