Hunting the Most Powerful Production Airgun? (Hatsan Piledriver .457)

I recently had a chance to hunt with one of the most powerful production air rifle in the world! In this video I take the soon to be released Hatsan Piledriver .457 with me on a hunt in Texas. This big bore rifle is generating over 700 fpe, and provides 5 usable shots per fill, propelling a 525 grain up to almost 780 fps. The .50 caliber version is putting out over 800 fpe.
I used this gun to take deer and javalina, and the terminal performance was very impressive. I only had the gun for a short while and can’t wait to get it back for another outing and a more rigorous test day on the range.
This rifle was ergonomic, fast and easy to cycle, offered a high shot count (in the context of uber powerful big bores). But power without accuracy is meaningless, and I can report that this gun is also very accurate. Give the video a look, and if you have any questions, I will do my best to answer them.

Yeah. I bet Hatsan might even bring this gun into production for the general public. Did I hear Jim say you can get more than two usable shots? I hope it comes a repeater like my Hatsan Hercules in .45 seven shot rotary mag. I have had good luck with Hatsan products. I also have a Mod 130 .30 and a Sniper 125 in .25. Both strong and accurate.. Waiting for a AT-44 pump action. Love the videos Jim. No bias and informative. Thanks..

Thanks. It has changed a great deal. When I came back to the States in 1999 a confirmed airgunner, after almost 15 years living in Europe, Japan, and Australia, I thought I was about the only one in the country hunting with airguns. I found more like minded people in the early 2000's through online forums, and as I started writing online articles, then books, magazines, and eventually the whole video thing, I got plugged into the community and the industry in a way that was never anticipated. From this vantage I've gotten to watch and be a part of the innovation and changes in the world of airgunning, especially with respect to hunting opportunity in the USA and South Africa. Its been a wild ride so far, and keeps getting better every year, I really do think we are in the golden age of airguns!

I like that Texan as well, and don't think you can go wrong with that gun either. I did like the ergonomics of the Piledriver.... but need to spend more time before I can draw a direct comparison. I've got several Texans in different calibers, and I've taken a lot of game with them. But the Texan and the Piledriver, even if they had the same power, would be different guns. I think a lot will come down to which and individual prefers.

Your work there, goes to show that the UK laws are very onerous and unnecessarily so. For most deer, our laws prescribe .243cal minimum = >2000ftlbs !!! With that 525gr lump of lead, I bet you get far less meat damage than we do with our 100gr 3800fps ballistic tips! :-)

I have the kral puncher jumbo and just got the hatsan air max both 22 cal. They are both great guns, the kral is a lot louder then the hatsan. The hatsan is a powerhouse of a gun out the box. I’ve taken squirrels with both and birds with the kral. They both do the job, but when you hit them with that hatsan you know it. The loudness of the pop and them just hitting the ground. They don’t get back up!!!

I'm surprised not many people know about the Winchester 70-45 cal air rifles that have been out for years. It's a sub 700 to 750 ft-lbs PCP. AEA now has the 70 cal beast, I want to try it. Nice shooting sir, you knocked them all off their feet.
@americanairgunhunter
@americanairgunhunter 2 жыл бұрын
These rifles are private labeled by Winchester, manufactured by Evanix, marketed by Gamo. I have many of the Evanix rifles and find the quality good and performance solid. Haven't shot the private labeled guns which I understand have been manufactured to Gamo/Winchester specification. I think part of the issue may be that while Winchester is a legendary name in firearms, it carries no weight in the airgunning world, and there is a stigma about Gamo with many mainstream airgunners. I'll have to take a closer look, as I think Gamo shouldn't be discounted. The .72 caliber AEA Zeus is a very nice gun that I've done a bit of range work with. Taking it to Texas next week on a hog hunt, looking forward to seeing it in action!

The Bully .45 is generating just under 300 fpe, which is more than enough to hunt deer. The Piledriver in .45 is generating over 700 fpeand over 800 fpe in .50. That would give you a bit more reach and knock down power. Personally, if I had a Bully in .45 I wouldn't sell to buy the PileDriver (unless I intended to hunt hogs or other heavy bodied game). On the other hand, if I was buying one or the other for the first time, would probably go with the PileDriver.

Head to head against the venerable Texan LSS Carbon fiber. The numbers are basically the same. 750+ FPE. Mr Hollowpoint is getting over 800FPE STOCK!
@americanairgunhunter
@americanairgunhunter 4 жыл бұрын
Actually, the Piledriver in .457 is doing over 700 fpe out of the box, but has the potential to go higher, however the gun in .50 caliber is doing over 800 fpe. To be honest, unless your going for really large game, none of this matters much. I have several Texans and like them and use them a lot. I don't think the power difference between these guns matters from a practical standpoint. As a matter of fact I've had the barrels cut down on a couple of my Texans because I'd rather have a more compact gun and am willing to give up 100 fpe in this rifle to get it. But I stand by my statement, based on the specs released by Hatsan and Airforce, the Piledriver is the most powerful production gun. One other thing, none of this is to say I like the Piledriver more than the Texan, but I would put them both on my short list.

I never thought an air gun could compete with a rifle even at close range. but then the electric cars for moderate distances are competing with the gas cars. What a cool firearm. I've looked after watching the video to see the updated prices. Not cheap but very cool. Not sure where the bullets would be purchased.

I know that Hatsan has taken a thoughtful approach to this product, making sure they had production running before letting out any information, and getting an inventory in place before they start booking orders. So my expectation is that it won't be another Hammer situation.

Thats a very big difference in weight and is why these guns have alot of fpe 700+ to a .30 calibers 50 - 80 fpe. Just imagine this gun using a light weight 122gr slug from mrhollowpoint that would put this gun at 1100+ fps of muzzle velocity and still have around 350 - 400 fpe.

It has a fairly loud bark, no quantitative measure but it's about the same as other unshrouded BB's. My new production gun arrived, and after I get back from an overseas trip next week, I'll start shooting it and doing a detailed review. Over the next few months I'd like to cut down the barrel, try different suppressors, different bullets, and see what the gun can do.

I still think Hatsan airguns make great hunting rifles. I've got several, have used them for years, and they have continued to work very well on everything from prairie dogs to deer and hogs. Overall, I find them accurate, powerful, reliable, and shootable. My only real complaint is that they tend to be quite heavy..... but that is definitely not a deal breaker for me.
