I flew my drone in Detroit it's on my channel if you want to see haha, won't be going back, the day I was there 3 people were killed within 10 miles of me I found out later that evening. Never been anywhere quite like it. Would love to visit Chernobyl. Some people enjoy visiting run down buildings, I prefer entirely abandoned areas like the part of Detroit I went to

The scientists knew the design of their RBMK reactor very well, they were aware of the risks, it all came down to a balancing act between cost and safety. What caused the accident at the end was the negligent safety culture and the inherent unsafe design combined. - The exact composition of the control rods and the increased reactivity caused by inserting them into the core was kept from the engineers operating the plant. The Chief designer of the RBMK reactor knew that this could be an issue, because the reactivity was noticed in another RBMK reactor plant before, but nothing was done to remedy it. There was a widespread view that the conditions under which the positive scram effect would be important would never occur. - The authors who wrote the test procedure had no knowledge of the positive SCRAM issue, furthermore it was allowed to disable key safety equipment if it was according to procedure. - The safety test was supposed to only affect the electrical side and therefore did not need approval from the the chief design authority but it required disabling certain safety equipment from the reactor itself, which normally would require approval. - Due to the conditions of the reactor at the time, it was not possible to do the safety test according to procedure, so they took the more inexperienced night shift and forced them to do it anyway, manually by disabling almost all safety features. The computer system designed to monitor the plant could not be used because it was never designed to operate in these conditions.

The technology and the physics principals behind nuclear power generation are understood perfectly. They were understood then and they are still understood today. The Chernobyl disaster happened because inexperienced workers were entrusted with performing a dangerous experiment on a live nuclear reactor by a bunch of brainless government suits. Fukushima happened because, even though they'd been warned that the plant was vulnerable to tsunami, the corporation in charge didn't think it was worth spending the money to fix it. The problem with nuclear power isn't the science or the technology. The problem is human/government/corporate ignorance and greed.

I like VICE, and I love VICE News, but this was not a strong video. It was just two people getting drunk walking around Chernobyl and not much was actually explained. If this wasn't supposed to be an enlightening channel then it would be fine, just two people having a good time, who doesn't want to get drunk and walk around Chernobyl?
