I love your videos. Had an older gent local here miss a nice buck last season He didn’t know any better and had cleaned his gun and took it hunting right out the gate, no fouling the barrel. I educated him on this issue. Again love your videos keep ‘‘em coming. Thank you for your service too. I too am a 22 year plus active duty service USAF veteran.

James, thank you for your video's! You can mitigate the issue of clean barrel or cleaning solvents in the barrel by pushing two patches wet with Cigarette Lighter fluid, then dry patch. Best to always foul your barrel prior to hunting and do your homework on your barrel with chronograph with what ever method you are using.

Dang James, I haven't fired that many rounds over the Magnetospeed right after cleaning the barrel. I got some experimenting to do. Before hunting I would fire 2 or 3 rounds through the clean barrel. I need to be firing more than I do.

James I agree absolutely clean barrels compared to fouled in barrels are two different barrels. I found that barrels continue to speed up from absolutely clean to stable at about 150 rounds. A minimum of 15 to 20 rounds prior to hunting with a rifle is my standard after absolute clean I use a borescope and make sure that there’s no copper no powder no carbon at all zero the barrels are very slow at that point

For consistency from my 6.5/284 I need 8 rounds out before I go for record fire. I learned this the hard way during match 531 of 2003 National Long-Range Championships where I went for record after first sight-in shot, which was a pinwheel X. My first 6 rounds for record were 12 o’clock 10’s even though I adjusted elevation between shots. 7th and subsequent rounds all X’s but not enough for a win from my perfect 200 point score. As I recall my 200 x 14 performance was only good for 4th place. At any rate, I usually record all shots in my score book for a good understanding for where clean/ cold bore shots will go vs fouled/hot bore shots and I never go to a tournament with a clean bore or bore too washed out to hold X-Ring at 1000 yards. Some shooters don’t keep a score book I know them from their poor scores in CMP EIC and NRA High Power Rifle Competition. Bottom line is shooters should have a chronograph and a score/data book to better hit where aimed.

I have noticed cold clean bore first shot impact can be a couple inches off, Are you suggesting that say... you go to the range to check your zero on a clean bore, fire 8 or maybe 12 rounds, to just leave the bore alone i.e. no bore snake or wet patch clean for the season?

DOPE works with a clean barrel. But if you "foul" your barrel (usually 5-10 shots) you shouldn't have to account for first shot on target. First shot, last shot, cold, hot. None of that should matter as long as you don't change the consistency of your barrel after sighting in. Break in and sighting is totally different. I rarely clean my barrels to a point of stripping copper. That's only on my break in... (Edit) I leave the carbon and copper alone on those 5-10 confirming shots since it don't hurt the gun...

I’m not sure if your testing was enough to prove what you were going for. You have factory ammunition which on average is 50 fps spread is pretty normal. To prove what you are wanting to prove I would shoot clean for 10 rounds then shoot 15 rounds averaging every five rounds and then see what the results are. This is very interesting. I’ve never thought of this before.

@@jamesmooney5348 Let me ask you this do you believe that his test proves his theory? To me this test did not prove his theory but his theory has merit. I would like to see a test that proves his theory that’s it. I would love to see the results of a bigger test platform.

I agree with you, and it is a legit observation. For my hunting rifle I at least fire 2 fouling shots, the first clean/cold bore shot is usually a bit off. Next I will sit the rifle for a long enough time to let it cool to ambient temp and then fire three shots to confirm the cold (not clean) bore shot and two follow up shots impact where expected and group as expected.
