In the competition shooting world, Pistol Caliber Carbine (PCC) matches are all the rage. However, each passing year sees more models that fit the term, even when many are not built specifically for matches. In fact, a number of these short guns can be practical hunting options.

They cant even make one that cycles 9mm reliably even using the most reliable mags in the world designed by glock... let alone their own mags. What makes you think they can do it in a more powerful rimmed revolver cartridge? The Henry Homesteader is an 800 dollar paperweight

I have an acquaintance that takes pig with a .25 cal ppc air rifle. I don't think a 9mm will have a problem. I really like my Henrys. I have their pump action in 22wmr, and a big boy X in .45 Colt. Easily takes white tail here in East Texas. As far as this format, the Henry homesteader is really nice, but Ruger is getting my money. Thanks again!♥️🌹

What do you think about 200 grain .357 loads ? An old guy that lives near me with a lot of experience with old cartridges suggested I get into the heavier loads. I do shoot black powder and enjoy the slow heavy bullets for fun-target shooting. Curious what you think.

Thank you for mentioning legality. Here in Wyoming, the 357 Magnum is the minimum legal cartridge in rifle/carbine actions for big game, and then only with certain bullets (cartridge overall length must be at least 1.5" and/or it must deliver 500 foot pounds at 100 yards). However the 357 is not legal from handguns as it fails to meet the energy levels as worded in the regs. So to the best of my knowledge, the only semi-auto PCC legal here would be a Ruger 44 Mag.

​@@craigcook1571 The law here is that what are considered handgun cartridges must have a bore diameter of at least .35", an overall length of at least 1.5 inches, or that "generally delivers 500 foot pounds of impact at 100 yards" (directly from the regs). There are only a handful of 10mm loads that would meet the energy minimum when fired from a carbine (most 10 is watered down and barely faster than 40 S&W), and maybe two factory loads that would make it from a pistol with a 5" barrel, so a game warden could argue that it is not a cartridge that "generally delivers 500 foot pounds at 100 yards". If a hunter took a big game animal with a 10mm load that didn't meet the standards, it would mean a stiff fine, forfeiture of the animal, and loss of hunting privileges for several years. Safest to stick with 41 Magnum or up in handguns, and 357 Mag and up in long guns so there is no question.

What state do you live in. As far as in know right now is that my state is the same way. I have 2 PCCs in 10mm and I only use full power 10mm ammo. No FBI loads are used. Edit: Just looked up the ammo I use. Underwood 200gr. or 180gr. Sporting jacketed hollow point and their FMJs of the same weights. Great ammo for hunting deer if they'd let us. My state also goes by the 1.5 inch casing rule too.

The semiauto pc maybe for predator control. There is big different between a marlin in .44 mag vs a high point 995 in 9mm. The .357 and .44 mags are ok for deer hunting. The 9mm is not.

Can't imagine deer hunting with 9mm. Son bought CVA with scope for $279. Fun, accurate and deadly, so far up to 225 yd 9mm seems to be borderline. GREAT PRESENTATION!

I only use 9mm to kill hogs when running traps or something like alligator here in south Louisiana when they are on line and hook like you see on swamp people. I'd only consider deer 100 yards give or take a little with a 357mm 44mag or 10mm but only under 100.. I'm a big 45 acp fan and wouldn't consider it on deer unless it was around 50 yards or less..

In the bottom feeders 9mm or 32acp should work for small game. For large game 10mm would be the obvious choice. In the lever the world is open to you. Pick 327/32, 357/38, 44 mag/spl, 45 Colt, 454, 44-40, 38-40, 32-20, 41 mag depending on particular game.

Good video that was well put together on a subject often off the beaten path. After the Sandy Hook shooting when 22 rim fire was near impossible to find and you paid dearly for it when you did find it, found me looking for an alternative small game getter and pest control. I ended up with a Hi-Point 995 TS-FG for under 300 fun dollars out the door, tax included. Why in 9mm? At the time I could reload it for about 10 cents a round and I had a 55 gallon barrel of once fired brass which made it even more economical and of course I have a couple of 9mm handguns to boot too. Its a little too tacticool for my taste but its been exceptionally reliable, eats just about everything I have tried to put through it, the price was right and its minute of cottontail or raccoon at 25 yards all day long. Its got a lot more punch than a 22 rim fire and can be used for home defense too, just aint quite as cheap as 22 rim fire these days.

It has mixed reports on reliability. Alot of Henry firearms do . Some works great others need some help. That said if you get one that works it would be a really cool looking pcc
