Finally!!! Someone covers all the mistakes you shouldn't make and the ones everyone does when first learning to throw. I had to learn all these the hard way, so much respect for this video and what he's accomplished in his hunting practice.

Great video on the atlatl! I’m glad you touched on using only forward momentum for throw stability. Super important.

That was excellent Ryan. I noticed the shape of your atlatl has evolved. I’m interested in why.

I noticed that. They now have the leaf like look of a woomera, though narrower. Perhaps he created the wider groove to make it easier to set the dart's divot onto the spur?

I was very blessed to grow up with a father who started me on traditional archery at 4. So, I got to grow up using traditional projectile weapons . I also grew up playing baseball. Throw it like a baseball. Get a ball and glove. Play catch with your kids, grandkids. The motion and the Instinct for Aiming will never leave you.

I am still a newby at this, and the safest place to stand when I am throwing is in front of the target. But I think I have figured out the real undisputed reason the ancients used banner stones. I think it was because they could throw a longer dart well with a shorter atlatl. I have been working on the balance of my rig as you advise, and I have found that for me the longer atlatl required to throw the long darts in balance is a little awkward. I am sure I will adjust, but if you are an ancient hunter with different lengths of darts for different purposes, and you have your grandad's atlatl which you have used all your life, banner stones might make sense. Thoughts anyone? Or am I as far off in my speculation as I am in my throwing.

I think iv found another past time thaf not only is fun but also can put food on the table. Idk if this relates to this type of gear. But I throw knives and even when I throw a football or anything really. If I take the time and do a windup lock and throw or anything other than look and throw I will 9 times out of 10 miss. As long as I look lock and throw, I'm very accurate through out my power range. From a toss to a baseball fastball throw with a ball or my knives. Now I'll admit muscle memory is also a big factor in this as well. My release is the same my motion back to lock is the same. Now when I say lock. There is no pause between lock and the start of the forward motion. Any hesitation in this will also cause me to be off target, but only a few inches. I can get 6 out of 6 knives inside a paper plate and 3 or 4 of those inside a hands breadth and I'm working on getting 6 of 6 inside that hands breadth. It may sound silly but if I repeat something through the motion start to release and follow through which as in his throw Is ever so important to follow through. I played golf and so much of the most accurate golf swing also is due to muscle memory from start to follow through as well as when I shoot my bow amd arrow. I have a feeling each person must follow his rules of the throw but they must work within the limits of their body. Allowing their body to find that rhythm and posture to find that sweet spot that will make their throws deadly accurate.

I've had an idea recently and want to share it. Bamboo barbs on dart tips, hoping that they'll flex as the dart penetrates and slightly expand back to shape once in the animal..... Though, this may just be wishful thinking

How long would you make an atlatl for a 10 ft spear? I saw that it was very long but could you give the length? Also, would you say that you notice significantly more penetration in a long spear vs short spear without foreshaft?

(sigh) I am very discouraged. All I have learned so far is what does not work. I do not have river cane available in my area, all I have is golden bamboo. It is very stiff when cured and the 'big' end is way too heavy. Add that to the fact that I don't know how much of my trouble is my form and how much is my crappy equipment, and it is enough to make me abandon the whole idea. My spear flies, it even sticks. But it is sideways, or the tip drops, or the tail drops. My wife is rolling her eyes at the amount of time I spend on this, and when Mama ain't happy, ain't nobody happy. It has been three months now and I am getting nowhere. I can throw a stick, but I could do that anyway. Is anybody actually out there reading this stuff? Send up a flare or something! I don't expect to go buffalo hunting in the morning, but it would be nice to be able to hit a Styrofoam cooler three times out of five from ten yards. Thoughts anyone? Edit: 8/11/24 I am less discouraged. I have made several wood darts from Tulip Poplar that perform more or less as the ones I see on KZbin. Shout out to Paleoleo for his very concise video on the importance of equipment before the application of skill. The box I am throwing at is in some peril now. Before, in front of the box was the safest place to stand while I was throwing. My advice as a guy who has gone from never hitting the box to one who occasionally hits the box is don't start out with a seven-foot dart. Start with a five foot one, very light, and get it near the box. Five-foot darts are less accurate than seven-foot ones, but they are more accurate than I am. Someday I hope to throw a seven-foot dart just like the guy with the mustache! Look out Box Mammoth! Here I come! It is recycled shreds for you! Edit: 9/3/2024 Hehe! Plastic small Folgers coffee can lid with holes in it. Not a lot of holes, but definitely holes. From ten to twelve yards, I hit it now about one time in ten. I scare the heck out of it every time now. Just keep at it if you are as discouraged as me. I now feel confident enough to stump shoot, which is the next step to true competence.

You can use all sorts of wood. I suggest you look up the historical materials used on your continent and start from there. I live in Germany so I'm not allowed to hunt with my stone age weapons (nobody will know after the apocalypse, however). I use them for my job at a local open air museum however. Here it would be straight shoots of pine or maybe hazel. those things will work and are easy to work with.

While throwing you can feel the balance of the spear through the Atlatl. Focus on the target and with practice you can feel where you’re gonna hit.
