Thank you for the detailed report! Glad to hear some segments are open. But, one must also grasp the condition of nearby towns and roads before going there. And the info is not easy to come by. I heard some hostels ARE open and are frustrated by ATC's general statement about the southern 1/3 of the trail being closed. On the other hand, some hostels and stores may be damaged/destroyed. Also, you may not be able to hitch a ride or count on a shuttle service if the roads are damaged! And when you do reach an impasse, can you safely bail out, without taking resources away from the storm ravaged areas? In short, you may end up getting stranded. So, I think it's prudent to refrain from hitting the trail until more comprehensive info becomes available.

Thank you . Very helpful. I was on the AT near the N.O.C. when Helene hit. I came off trail and plan to pick up where I left off next Spring. The AT is the longest "footpath only" hiking path in the world - still - meaning bicycles, pack animals, and motorized vehicles are all prohibited. That is not the case on the other long trails. It is part of what makes the AT unique in the world.

Thank you for sharing this information. My late husband and I hike the AT and when I heard 1/3 was destroyed it broke my heart, so glad that was incorrect info.

Thank you for putting out the video. One small I think you meant to say that at approximately 2200 miles long, the AT is *among* the longest continuous hiking trails in the world, rather than it is the longest continuous hiking trail in the world. Within the US, the PCT is 2600 miles long and the CDT is about 3100 miles long. Other examples of longer trails include the American Discovery Trail at 6800 miles long and many others.

Thanks for the info! I believe the Appalachian Trail is the longest "hiking only" trail in the world. Some other trails may be longer but are multi-use trails in some parts.

I don't know if the Appalachian Trail is that is is quite that far west baby Spurs that hook into it but I would not be going back into that area for tourism for a while between North Carolina and Tennessee there is so much mess but thank you for this video because I feel like with most hurricanes most of the damage is close to the coastline the people leave and then they come back and they start picking up and it's just a long arduous process but the rescue and Recovery doesn't seem to take as long well when you have a storm that gets up into the mountains you have all this other stuff that takes forever because it's so hard to get in and out of and I think there's going to be a lot of Tourism spots there's going to be a lot of spots it'll probably be 10 years before anything gets back to normal in some areas

Some of the areas are reopening for tourism and others are still recovering

The bad part is from I-40 to Damascus, Springer to I-40 is OK, except, pollution flows down stream, water in rivers & streams could be polluted from chemical runoff and decomposing bodies. I am switching water filter to Red Cross filter because it has carbon element 3rd stage to filter out chemicals.

Well not to be harsh but hiking really isn't stopped due to a tree fallen across it or a washout because you are walking! It's easy to walk around or what not. If it's closed it would be something more than just washed out paths or downed trees! Someone or rather a group of people! doesn't want people walking through the area would be more the reason as to why it would be closed!

There may be risk of falling tree or landslides that need to be assessed
