Any vehicle can get stuck in sand. Driving in sand takes skill. If you don't know what you're doing then you can easily get stuck. Airing down, making sure you know how to use the 4WD system and maintaining momentum are key. Even more important is understanding the condition of the terrain. These are all things that the driver appears to have neglected. Parking a vehicle on saturated wet sand in the face of rising water pretty much guarantees the vehicle will get mired. Still there are various ways to get unstuck depending on how wet and saturated the sand was. This includes things like placing the floor mats under the tires which it does not appear like the driver had the wherewithal to attempt.

Yeah. Stock tyres on Grand Cherokees generally suck for offroading... especially ones spec'd for any trim except the Trailhawk versions. The first thing I do with a new Jeep is swing on over to the tyre dealership for new sets of shoes.
