Start a Mud Army! I live in Brisbane, Australia. About a million and a half people. The last flood we had, which looks like Austin at the moment, the city council asked ordinary people to lend a hand. The response was overwhelming. "We became The Mud Army. So many people who hadn't been hit badly got buckets, spades, tools, brooms mops etc and the council ferried them on buses to the worst hit areas. The worked alongside the army and the council workers with the heavier equipment. Others made sandwiches, and coffee. Others opened their homes to those who no longer had one. If you were injured helping out, you got free medical care. It was a massive success. Nearly everyone pitched in. Instead of expecting the city councils and army to do everything pitch in and lend a hand. Ask how you can help.

I honestly feel praying is kinda weird, in this context at least. If you believe God is all powerful and has control over everything, then wouldn't be in a way, rude (if you will) to plea for him to help the very people who deemed worthy of punishment? I'm very interested in hearing an answer :)

When the woman said that they didn't have the money to leave, that broke my heart. They couldn't leave because they didn't have the money but now they don't have a home and no money to rebuild. That would be me and my family but it's so sad to know that other people have to go through worse. When Maryland got that tornado on the Eastern shore I almost cried because I live in Maryland and I never thought that could happen here. Then to see Texis like this hurts even more. I want to help them so bad but I just can't 😭😭😭

If you have the audacity to make jokes about something that serious then you obviously have never been through any kind of devastating event like this. Shame on you. People are losing their homes and even their loved ones so before you make some kind of horrible comment why don't you put yourself in their shoes? I promise you you won't be laughing then. And not only do they still build new houses just with wood, they don't screw it together but just use nails. Its cheap, fast and looks good from a distance. But as soon as a little wind comes up, its all gone. And then all those who are strictly against regulations, because regulations are all bad, then beg for help from the government if they've lost everything. Having that said, its still sad to see people standing in the ruins of their existence. I hope they will get help to start over.

I honestly do not understand the excuse "because e didn´t have any money, that´s why I stayed" as a reason not to spend $50 on gas money and go to a safer town in a shelter that is free for a day or two. It simply has to do with people not wanting to be inconvenienced. I also dot accept the response some people do not have $50 because they have food in their homes that theys bought right before the storm hit, and I am sure it is at least $50 worth. Should have used that money to drive to a safer city shelter where food is free, and even the small towns have them for the homeless.

This is devastating and we will feel the same and say the same when part of California falls off into the ocean, or when the Arctic sends devastating cold from melting icebergs, sinkholes eat up Florida, and more ... we know it will we just don't know when! Like we know the south is prone to these tragic hurricanes - remember what happened to New Orleans! - we just don't plan very well hoping it will never happen to 'us'. It will... in time bad will happen everywhere. Because of this gas prices will go up and the poor will get poorer - where are our rich brothers and sisters when we really need them?! I know money doesn't get them out, but it will help get them rebuilt! Maybe if we stop spending money on killing others, we could have a contingency plan/fund for such catastrophic events such as this!

Houston, like all municipalities receives federal EMA funding and training for Emergency Management Response. They have a working plan for Emergencies including orderly evacuation if necessary by local EMA, LEO, CERT, CAP, and National Guard units who all have resources, and the city also has resources for emergency transportation. The EMA plan is federally mandated, planned, well organized, coordinated and rehearsed so that participating groups and individuals are prepared for the call...which came from President Trump and Governor Abbot Aug. 25. Governor Abbott clearly called for Corpus Christi and Houston to evacuate, and that plan should have been implemented by Mayor Taylor on that same day. Mayor Taylor instead ignored Gov. Abbott's call for evacuation and chose to tell Houston residents to weather the storm in place, even though he noted that the storm was unprecedented. I wonder if Mayor Taylor's family "weathered in place" or evacuated...
