I live here & had flood & roof damage, I was lucky. I want to give credit to our neighbors, Samaritan Purse, the donations from all over the country to get us back up has been amazing. Our country turned their back on us & had it not been for the ones I mentioned, including coal miners from WV & volunteers coming to help us we would be in a lot worse shape. You can’t even reach fema on the phone or in person. This has been eye opening to all of us in the area & we’ve seen who’s been there for us and who hasn’t

Don't forget all of us who have given monetarily. Your government turned their back on you, NOT your country. Our little church alone (and we are just one little church) raised 40k+. All for the relief. We have men up there everyday working. So, no, your country did not abandon you. The government did.

I have only great memories of Lake Lure and Chimney Rock from 13 and 20 years ago and seeing them like this now is so sad. I can't imagine these towns ever recovering from the devastation.

That old bridge was made into a beautiful bridge by the locals called “The flowering bridge”. They had thousands of species of flowers and herbs. I live close by in Rutherford County and I loved seeing this work of art every year. They had a “rainbow bridge” down below with pets collars that have passed. It’s all washed away.

The bridge was the flowering bridge! It was a beautiful walking bridge as well as a place for gardens. It also had the rainbow bridge. Makes me very sad. Visited that many times.

The bridge was the Flowering Bridge and it was beautiful. The people in the buildings are probably trying to salvage what they can. Some of these people have lost everything. I don't live up there but have been up there many many times. We were up there in July of this Year and I have a hard time realizing where I am. My heart really breaks for them.

I spent decades buying and rehabbing older, abandoned homes in downtown Durham. With much experience, wooden structures can be made plumb and straight working from the ground up. Some of those do look hopeless but you never know till you investigate

Been thru it unfortunately. Its about a 15 to 20 year process. Cleanup is the biggest issue and is a huge undertaking, consuming many years at best. The land will heal itself over time. But it will never be what it once was again. New buisness, New homes, New people and new memories made. Good luck to all.

Families have been more displaced than is imaginable. The poorest of the poor are likely hiding to try to keep their children from being taken away. While some things seem obvious to most of us, families that there already living with LESS than paycheck to paycheck, especially during this inflation, now have the loss of EVERYTHING they had. So, yeah, there are absolutely families hiding trying to avoid the worst destruction of all: family separation. We have to ask how to help well before we just intervene. Our intervention can harm children more than not “helping” sometimes. I work with two boys who most would remove from their home, but having spent time with them, it is clear that removing them from their mother would be a worse trauma than their current living situation.

Big water towers need to be hooked up to big sources. If water trucks were brought in, the people could get water until a permanent water tower is restored

I would like to see some Lake Lure cleanup videos of the actual lake. Apparently, all the debris flows terminated IN Lake Lure. I can’t even imagine the stored energy there that now needs releasing. So tragic.

I won't be able to watch this until later, but I'd actually been planning for a bit to visit the Lake Lure area the weekend after Helene -- it was when I'd have the time available. Obviously, it'll be a while before I get to go, now... (Edit: I'd been wanting to see, among other things, the Lake Lure Inn & Spa, where parts of Dirty Dancing got shot. It's from 1927, and did make it through well enough to reopen in mid October 2024 -- year included as futureproofing.)

Ironic isn't it that the carbon dioxide emitted by burning petroleum - that warmed the Gulf of Mexico to record temperatures - that strengthened a moisture carrying hurricane destined to the mountains of North Carolina is the same petroleum being used in enormous amounts in enormous machines to clean up those same mountain communities? So while rehabilitating those communities, more carbon dioxide is being spewed into the atmosphere to further the warming of the Gulf of Mexico. Doesn't' appear to be any escape from this cycle that is of sufficient size and timeliness to render our world future very positive. Tell your grandchildren that we did the best our immense ignorance would allow.
