We had our first hurricane (hurricane Fiona) experience at the cabin. Although we had completely different plans, the weather had something else in mind. Living this far out and alone there is a lot to think about being off grid in the wilderness especially in storm season.

Our Journey! How did we get here?
In the winter of 2019 we moved in to our self built van full time to begin living, working and travelling Canada. We quickly fell in love with chasing our dreams of adventuring off the beaten path, living off grid and being self sustaining. We drove our van thousands of miles through various countries-Canada, USA, Mexico & Guatemala. All of which we documented here on our channel, be sure to check that out! After many years on the open road we found ourselves 15 acres of remote woods on the East Coast of Canada where we are building a homestead and renovating our fully off the grid cabin. We are diving into this chapter of our lives in no experience, we're so happy we can bring you all along as we learn to do it all with our own two hands. Thank you for being here with us for cabin life, van life and all the in between!

Porter is a super hero. He has such a great attitude. I know the girls pay him, but he always goes above and beyond. I’m so glad the four girls are all okay. Respectfully, take it from this ol' septuagenarian these 'ain't girls; these are WOMEN!
@smellyolegoat150
@smellyolegoat150 2 жыл бұрын
@@JGW845 I know very well that these are women in all of the very best definitions of that word. I’m referring to the four of them. They refer to Bella and Izzy as “the girls”. I’ve heard them and their friends refer to the whole family as “the girls”. So I refer to the family of four as “the girls” as an all inclusive term of endearment, not in any way disrespecting their power, their savvy, or their unmatched capabilities. You don’t call female dogs women. I guess I could refer to the group as the ladies, but that’s not the terminology that they and their loved ones seem to use to refer to their little four member nuclear family. I do appreciate the respect you were showing Crystal and Jazzy by making that point though. 😉👏
@JGW845
@JGW845 2 жыл бұрын
@@smellyolegoat150 That's why I started out with "respectfully." I get that you mean it as an affectionate term. If I was to include the dogs too I would probably use the term "ladies" as they are such a class act.

In May 1953 my family arrived in southern Ontario! October 1954 Hurricane Hazel hit Toronto as an extratropical Category 1 storm! I was just shy of turning 7! I have memories of looking out at the parking lot next to our home! Since then I have many more memories of living through extreme weather! It is truly amazing to be able to look back in the immediate present afterwards. I've said it before! If you aren't a Canadian when you arrive, one year of Canadian extreme weather will make you one! It's what connects and brings us all together! Congratulations for surviving your first major storm! Peace

Right there is little water pressure and the power comes and goes. It was terrible, not comparable to hurricane Maria in 2017 but lots of damage was done. The island is about 80-85% with power. We live on a gulf island in BC and have tons of power outages here, so although we're technically "on grid" for electrical/phone/internet, we also have solar battery packs for our phones/computers, woodstove for heat, water cisterns and a berkey for clean water, headlamps, and always keep our 72 hour emergency packs updated and our pantry full. We also never let our car gas tank get below half. Doesn't hurt to be prepared, especially knowing we are long over due for a big earthquake here.

I lived and worked in the Cyclone corridor of the Pilbara in Western Australia for 12 years and experienced many cyclones, including a couple of CAT4. You did everything right in the way you prepared for the incoming storm and stayed tuned into the emergency services broadcasts. Well done. Good to see you all got through unscathed and was impressed how you and your community checked on each other and helped to clean up. Small communities are the best, and they care for each other in the rough times. .. .. You girls deserve a drink, and give yourselves a pat on the back for a job well done.. .. Looking forward to your next vid...

We lived for 20+ years in Florida so we know how scary and destructive hurricanes can be. Fiona was a bad one so very happy you were not negatively impacted. Count your blessings. Now we have terrible devastation to the southwest of Florida. Although we no longer live in Florida we have many friends and family so we are heartbroken for them. Love your videos.😍

We just made it through hurricane Ian here on the east coast of Central Florida!! So glad you girls made it through and had everything in order, as well as amazing friends like Porter to help you! I wouldn't have made it without my incredible neighbors, and of course my Jackery to get me through 48 hours without power! We got this girls! Prayers to you always! I'm so glad that you ladies did so well and only your firewood got soaked, which can be replaced. It's great that your shed arrived in time to store all your louse items in it. I hope Tyler and Tod were fortunate, as well.

That hurricane was super hairy and could have changed your lives in a terrible way. Thank goodness you guys and the dogs are okay. Great job preparing, and big shout outs to Porter. What a super hero. Seriously, you should get that guy a cape and a costume. He deservers so much more credit, Also shout out to the local community for looking out for one another. Your surrounded by good people, and it's inspiring to us all.

We were down that way during Hurricane Fiona, near Pictou in a rented 30 foot mobile home for a vacation. It was a bad as you showed, but everyone pulled together and we all made it work. Community, even among strangers, is a powerful thing.

We all need a friend like Porter 🫶 What a good guy. Glad you are okay. Must've been pretty frightening in a little wooden house in the middle of nowhere. Always lovely to see communities come together in times of need & look out for each other. A nice reminder of the good in this crazy world.

So glad that you had no major damage after the storm. Now you know the drill and will know what to do next time. We've just come through Ian here in NC, coastal area where I am had flooding but not much damage from wind. South of us in SC had the brunt of damage on second landfall. My prayers go out to all who are recovering from both storms. I still have damage to my home 4 years after Florence. Good that your neighbors are checking in and yay for Porter filling in that trench! Have a better week coming up and Yay Pack!!💛💛🐾🐾

Whew!! I am glad you four fared so well through the storm. As you were covering your woodpile I thought, those ladies have no ideaaaah. I was hoping you would wrap rope around the tarps but in the end, things didn't turn out as badly as I had feared and your wood at least basically stayed stacked. Most of your property seemed to do pretty well. Now you know if you should ever need to prepare, where you did well and where you will modify next time. I was surprised not to see shutters on your windows and everything else that was glass because here in the States when hurricanes are coming, shuttering up is a first line defense measure along with sandbags. Your windows seemed to be fine so I am happy for you and also that your puppy did okay in waiting so long to go outside and relieve her bladder. Have a good week and I hope you don't need to spend too much time cleaning up and doing repairs. I am thinking how cute your little cabin might look if you built shutters for your windows that you could use if every you have to deal with a storm again. See you all next Sunday and thank you for the update. Again, I am so glad you all are safe and your house is still standing and seeming unscathed. Kudos on the roofing job!

Having not been through a hurricane, other than the tail ends of two while sailing down the west coast during my time in the Navy, preparation is everything. As a suggestion while you are waiting for your solar system to be completed and you need to keep warm, it would behoove you to keep at least a three day supply of wood in your garage. This will keep you going until things dry out and you can always dry your outside wood with the heat from the stove and keep a steady supply of wood going to keep you going. I've used this trick on several damp camping trips and it keeps people more comfortable. Glad you made it through this trial by water and wind.

You both got everything done in good order prior to Hurricane Fiona. I'm in North San Diego, mild weather most of the time, summer was insanely hot everywhere, but no huge storms. And this past week, Hurricane Ian slammed big chunks of Florida, 3 million were out of power at one point, 23.7 feet of flood/surge water in some areas. 1000's of permanent RV's , travel trailers, mobile homes which there are many, all underwater. Some folks have even lost their lives. 😯😥. Yet many areas didn't flood, but sustained high winds. It's a lot to comprehending. You two are in a good spot, the forest around you protected you 💖🌈💖🌈💖

Impressive prep and calm demeanor. You're great examples of hard work and wisdom. I think it was pretty telling when you revealed"yes, we have power to make coffee..." Nice save of the tomato plants they won't forget it either. Luckilthe trench got done in time. Kudos dude working skilledly into the night by light bulb. He must be exhausted ! Gosh that Creek was raging. Keep an eye out for ice , snow buildup on sides near spring melt, erosion could test whole section of road away . The dogs were like 2 little kids, we made it thru storm...Zoom Zoom look look.Glad your ok Take Care
