It's good that you were lucky and did not get badly hurt, but now you know why you should use eye protection when working on anything. You never know when a damage might happen. Personally I had a grinder cutter running when the blade exploded and it spread sharp metal pieces all over, the only reason why my eyes wasn't hurt was because I was using glasses, but my hands and part of my body got spears by metal pieces. Why it exploded like that I do not know, but since then I have been very careful about it and especially whenever anything that might be dangerous like power tool, chemicals, paint and a lot more. My glasses that day had a crack and a huge rip on the surface so I know one of those piece would have hit my eye. The cost that day, was basically new clothes, some bandages and new glasses which for me costs a bit more than 1000$. Both my mother and my brother has both had their own accidents like that, my mother got blue threads going through her fingers as a result and my brother got part of a finger ripped off because he wasn't paying attention why working with powered machines. I have a bunch of horror stories like that which happened to either someone I know or something I saw before the place got closed of by the cops. It's never pretty when something goes bad or someone do not show the tools the respect they deserve. So wearing some safety gear is always the smart thing to do.

You should have gotten an Adjustable angle finder, with one of those angle cuts gets a lot easier to do. True wood workers has all the nice tools to make things easier, but one of those angle finders are very usable when doing stuff like what you are doing. Great work even so through. :D

I saw this step latter that lay flat against the wall until they pulled it out, then if folded outwards to become a full stairs. if the angle is right and the distance it good enough, you could do the same and make a stairs that almost vanishes while taking up nearly no space while not in use. Sadly I can't remember what such solutions is called.

I hope the roof under the steel panels will hold and won't rot. It could cause problems down the line. I wold strip the old stuff off check the wood and do plastic foil + the seet steel panels just to be safe.
