The part where the eye pass over is SO COOL!!!! I can just feel the calm and probably extreme humidity of the scene. It's almost like the sun is going to come out.

I was in Ft. Myers and that was pretty intense to go through at 'only' a Cat 1/2. Irma was a BEAST. This is spectacular footage and great coordination with the radar as it hit.
@markpalavos37426 жыл бұрын
It was like that in Clearwater.
@tvold92044 жыл бұрын
It was a high end 2 but I think the official estimates for intensity were a bit low. I would say that in ft Myers, it was probably a 115mph cat 3 Edit: I think ft.myers intensity was valid, but landfall was probably a bit stronger.
@tvold92044 жыл бұрын
@@markpalavos3742 no it wasn't. Actually it was worst in naples which this is in marco island. Edit: Worst was east of Naples.
@MoMoMyPup104 жыл бұрын
@@tvold9204 yeah no way it was like this in Clearwater, but I don't know what else we can go by then what the forensics tell us. 115mph (sustained) Cat 3 were only recorded in Marco and south edge of Naples. It was weakened by the time it got to Ft. Myers.
@throwbiegd66273 жыл бұрын
@@tvold9204 actually that is false, Marco island got the worser winds and Irma was at around 110mph when it’s eyewall started impacting Naples

Yep Irma was a beast and we aren't even in FL. We are above ATL and that dang thing COVERED our state in size, and was merely a tropical storm as it moved through but we defintely don't get to experience hurricanes this far inland and that was rough. All the big oak trees toppled over in our yard around the house. Very frightening and went without power for at least a week. Dorian is very similar but they claim it's gonna hug the coast. I beg to differ. There's ALWAYS a last minute change that devestates a region people took a sigh of relief from being effected.

Chris, do you think in the final report they will up the winds at Marco Island landfall to maybe 125-135mph range? 115 was a joke at that time IMO. SFMR data supports a higher intensity at that time since surface winds were actually higher than flight level winds at that time. Naples airport had a 142 mph gust before failure and a storm chaser recorded 99k sustained winds as well at final landfall. I know the dry air did a number on the eyewall, but the half eyewall was pretty intense, and right before landfall the eyewall was actually getting stronger on radar as the storm seemed to be making a comeback. I think Irma was 130 at final landfall and on the Keys as well. Some say the final landfall should be a strong 2 due to flight level winds but no way in hell that was only a 110mph storm at Marco landfall. It was probably 120-125 over downtown Naples when it got there. The tree and shrub damage and footage on Marco looks like a weak 4 or strong 3. These post Andrew buildings hold up better hence only minor structure damage. How would you compare it to Charley that you were in?
@patrickstar92377 жыл бұрын
in downtown naples it was a cat 3 with winds to 120 to 115
@katmcpheestlfan7 жыл бұрын
Technically when it was over Naples at 5pm advisory they put the winds at 110mph due to weakening on land. I think over Naples 120-125mph is right. Tropmet youtube page has good eyewall footage from downtown Naples. No way this was that weak there. At the peak it looks kinda Charleyish too in the eyewall almost. I'm going with 130 on Marco Island. There is just no way this was 115 at Marco Island based on watching your footage from Marco Island as well. With the eyewall rebounding right before landfall, I wonder what the intensity would have been if it would have been 20 miles west and stayed just off shore and made landfall on Sanibel, Pine Island if it would have got even stronger. I don't know why NHC didn't us SFMR to keep Irma stronger when it was hitting marco. I emailed Stacey Stewart to get his take on it but yet to hear back. When the Katrina debate was going on I emailed him about Katrina landfall intensity and at the time he felt it was still a weak cat4 at LA landfall.
@patrickstar92377 жыл бұрын
well katrina was a low end cat 4 or high cat 3 when it made landfall
@katmcpheestlfan7 жыл бұрын
On the final report NHC lowered the winds to 125 first landfall and 120 MS landfall.

At the southern tip of Marco Island, I would estimate near 130 MPH. This is high end cat-3. Pretty major.

I do believe it was hurricane Wilma that for the first time in my life I seen that eye, andthe sun peaking through. But on the other side of that storm was crazy! We lived inland. Wasn't this strong though. I still have family and friends there and they went through Irma. My brother said he will never stay during a hurricane like that again.
