A recording of this warning (and the news clips of NOLO mayor Ray whatsisname) were posted on a web forum the day before Katrina hit. I was like man, that sounds kinda dire

If you can find the web forum with the recording, please share it with us, thanks. If you can’t that’s fine too

I still have the paper version that came up on the AP wire back in 2005. It's yellowed and weathered, but damn if it isn't still relevant.

Very different circumstances. Florida is built to withstand hurricanes. New Orleans is like a bathtub waiting to be filled with water.

"No one ever anticipated the breach of the levees" 💀

I think the NWS does a great job, but let’s not act like their predictions came true. The strongest sustained winds in New Orleans were 95mph, or a strong category 1, since the eye passed about 25 miles east of the city. Katrina was a very large and destructive storm, but if the levees and flood walls in New Orleans had held, I don’t think it would have been nearly as memorable, in New Orleans at least. Their predictions ended up looking very accurate, but they never predicted the flood protection system failing.

Yes but at the time of the warning it was still expected to make a direct hit on the big easy
