What a shame. I couldn't believe that the radio station was playing Oh, Babe one morning while I was driving my husband to work. I hadn't heard it in many years. I got all excited, turned up the volume and went back to a simpler time in my life. Towards the end of the song it dawned on me that they must be playing it because Norman passed away and I was right. So very sad.....thank you for the happy memory, Hurricane and RIP.

Norman 'Hurricane' Smith - RIP thankyou for your contribution to the good things. Wrote to him once in the 90's and got a very nice reply regarding his own work and his work with The Beatles and Pink Floyd amongst others. Norman Smith, record producer, was born on February 22, 1923. He died on March 3, 2008, aged 85

I remember the song "Oh Babe What Would You Say" back in 1972 / 73. It brings back some fond memories of when I was only 13 years old. But I never heard this song "Who Was It" until just recently but I very quickly clued in that it was Hurricain Smith because I thought the voice of the frontman sounded familair. Good old Norman Smith.

Was a trumpet player in high school when Hurricane Smith hit the Rhode Island airwaves. He was like the British version of an Italian Sicilian mobster vocally...the kind of Jimmy Durante tone that mellowed with loving words and lyrics. Crooners par excellance. He is still one of my most cherished of performers.

March 7, 2008, The Independent. "Joining Abbey Road, the EMI studio in London in 1959 was the making of Norman 'Hurricane' Smith. He rose from lowly apprentice making tea, sweeping floors and pushing the odd button to tape operator, assistant engineer and then engineer on hits like Frank Ifield's 1962 UK chart-topper "I Remember You". He was also present when the Beatles auditioned for Ron Richards and George Martin on 6 June 1962. "I couldn't believe what louts they looked with their funny haircuts. They didn't impress me at all," Smith told the writer Brian Southall. Still, the engineer went on to oversee an estimated 180 tracks for the group, taking in nine UK No 1 singles and the six best-selling albums Please Please Me, With The Beatles, A Hard Day's Night, Beatles For Sale, Help! and Rubber Soul.
