This and the line a verse or so before it paint such a dark and horrible picture. "If this must be, then burn with me. Anything. Just don't leave" Basically, he doesn't care what nonsense the mother is screeching. He'll burn if it means his child is still alive.

Exactly. This song describes what happened in Kansas a few weeks ago. A mom killed one of her two children for Jesus. Wow. BTW, I'm not religious, and this is one of those reasons why. I understand not all religious people are like this, but the ones who are get me so infuriated.

I was folding my clothes when rapture came on and I went from concentrating on mating socks to literally quiet awe for the 5 mins this song was on. The buildup and that final scream at 4:41 gave me the most intense chill from any song ive ever heard to this day. Still A song I lose myself to while driving...and mating socks lol.

My son's mother held back telling me she was pregnant with my son, it took a friend of hers to tell four months later. She told me she was giving him up to adoption and that I should move on as if his birth never came into existence. As a passive and caring person for the life I wanted to start with her, I made the trip to be there at the hospital and to take him home with me. Mistake or not I love my son, she chose not to even try. She got to go see Hurt for free, which made me feel like niether my son or myself shouldn't exist. She had an easy way out of a life we were making with lies and silence. Her excuses wieghed over my reasons why I still loved her and that she needed to be around to see her son. Even though some verses in this song I can relate to. It was a mistake to keep contact with her knowing that what she had done to have it her way and the freedoms she had while I took responsibility. It was the kind of heaven I took for granted to see it as my hell and prison. I now see clearly and will never involve my son and myself with a selfish person claiming to care but shows no effort to express her words into actions and be there for my son. She is free to do whatever without consequence and without shame until the rapture comes to meet us.

I've looked into this song a ridiculous amount. What seems to be the truth is that he had an affair with a married woman, she got pregnant and after the baby was born, which he could have possibly not known about at that time, she killed it because she couldn't live with herself and her husband with another man's baby. The feels. That's why he said, "find in me, room to breathe"..he never had a chance and she never told him.

Just wanted to toss in my two cents here, but... Yes, obviously the woman in the song is very religious - to the point of insanity - however, I don't see that the lyrics necessarily mean she is a married woman having an affair. "Why are we stuck in this pantomime, fearing a God who died, one who would not deny lovers" ...to me, this line seems to strike more of a tone of two people who are unmarried and having an intimate relationship, and "If this must be, then burn with me, anything, just don't leave" ...to me, reinforces this idea, as it seems that he is begging her, despite everything, not to leave him. And my guess is that maybe she was not crazy when their relationship started. It could be that they were young, and she was brought up in a family that was very religious but having a sexual relationship outside of marriage was her rebellion. For whatever reason, she didn't have an abortion, obviously, as the child was born; thereafter, she was either driven crazy by guilt, or possibly - over the timespan of the pregnancy and birth, up to when she killed the baby - was constantly verbally berated by her parents and other people of her church until she went bonkers. Also, I would guess that the child didn't live very long at all, given the words of her explination at the end of the song where it sounds as if he never got to see the baby.
@baileymoran8585 Жыл бұрын
I took it to just mean the baby was born out of wedlock. Christians act like that’s the worst thing you can do, outside of being something other than straight. Sexual ‘sins’ are often weighted as on par with murder in more extreme churches. Not so much sex crimes, but anything outside of a straight marriage. I don’t know if the band ever clarified or said anything to suggest there was an affair, and a part of me really wants this to be really well done fiction, but you are correct. It doesn’t have to be an affair. Just two people who had sex outside of marriage.

The song is using the term rather ironically. It’s about a woman who’s so deeply immersed in in christianity that she ‘hears the voice of god’ tell her to murder her own baby because it was born out of wedlock. Hence the whole ‘yes I would if I could destroy your god’ part. Idk the band’s stance on mainline christianity but it’s clear they don’t like he fundamentalists who do batshit things like this.

Damn... The first time I heard the full thing (the ending lyrics having been cut from the music video) - I've had two miscarriages and the ending cut me deep...

I listened to this song for more a long time, and I loved it. Then I read the lyrics and now I only listen to the song to effect suffering unto myself... to devour my tear stained heart.

"So she walked in the baby's room, knowing what she should do leaves me in absolute horror she put her hand on its lips and gave it one last kiss and sang some tune that went. Until your rapture falls to pieces, till your rapture falls to pieces find in me the room to breathe simple things like suffering" She swore she heard the voice of Jesus, telling her it was wrong to keep it and one more thing it looked like me. Back when it breathed, rest in peace until the rapture comes to meet us" Wow.. I felt that, Rest In Peace. Poor baby.. 💔
