Actually if you remember the 16-bit days, making cheap garbage is a true return to form for Mad Catz. It's the TE2 era that was anomalous.
@AvengerII
@AvengerII 2 жыл бұрын
To be fair (OR to REMIND people), when Mad Catz launched their classic Tournament Edition line of joysticks in 2009 to coincide with the arrival of Street Fighter IV, it was discovered that the PlayStation 3 versions of those joysticks had a USB circuit standard that was obsolete and incompatible with most Windows PCs manufactured after a certain date. At the time, I had both a PowerMac (long since retired) and a PC running Windows XP (that PC has been gone for at least 3 years now). No matter what I did, I could NOT get the Mad Catz TE Rd 1/PS3 edition joystick to work on the Windows PC but it worked with the PowerMac (OS 10.4). Unless I wanted to buy a PCI card with the "correct" USB standard to make the TE work, I couldn't use it with the PC. Fastforward 13 years, and those of us who still have those Round 1 TE joysticks (PS3 version; the XBox 360 editions were licensed and had the PROPER USB standard for maximum compatibility), have to either retire the joystick (which is heresy; the Rd 1 TE joystick case has a nice form factor; like the Rd 1 better than the Rd 2 case), remove the original Mad Catz PCB and install a third party PCB (generally a Brooks board or MC Cthulu), or buy a Brooks adapter that WILL enable the original Mad Catz PCB to work with a modern PC and current-era consoles. The adapter is the cheaper, easier solution until the original Mad Catz PCB breaks. The TE PCB's (most generations of Mad Catz product but they were particularly bad in the Rd 1 joysticks made for both PlayStation and XBox) have a reputation for breaking. There are other issues with the early TE joystick cases (Rd 1 and Rd 2; not mod-friendly unless you do some plastic cutting on the inside) but the PCB breakdown is a real thing many people have experienced. It hasn't happened to me but I don't play in tournaments with a ton of other people or lug my joystick controller halfway around the world! Mass-market joysticks aren't built like tanks and they sometimes break despite the best attempts to armor and protect them...

@AvengerII
@AvengerII 2 жыл бұрын
@@seigejet The compatibility issues of the Mad Catz TE/Rd 1/PS3 for PC, later PS3 models, and PS4 has been addressed by Brooks. Their system adapters work for the early model Mad Catz joysticks (TE, Brawl) for the PS3. It's a cheaper solution than installing a new PCB although for some people they had to install a new PCB anyway. Mad Catz has never been known for long-lasting reliability. The way some people treat their hardware (they live and act like Homer Simpson or Dave Lister) inevitably leads to damage! Safer to buy new than to buy from people you don't know...!

Mad Catz would have been so much better off just re-releasing the TE2+, or cutting the EGO's price by at least $60. I grew up with Mad Catz being kinda notorious for making bad 3rd party controllers. When they started making decent arcade sticks, I had to eat my words. Now it seems like they're returning to form.

I bought the Gamesir C2 and it is one of the best purchases I have ever made but considering the following: - I don't go to face-to-face tournaments and I feel very comfortable playing fighting games in arcades and online from home - I'm a PC gamer mainly - I want space inside and facilities to modify both the art of the arcade stick and change the lever and buttons - It doesn't bother me to go to my friend's house very occasionally who has a PS4 and have to connect a dualshock in parallel to play with it. If all these conditions are met, l say that the Gamesir C2 is fully recommended, in addition to also seeing it at a discount. The Arcade Stick has a premium feel, feels heavy and the internals are Sanwa as far as I can tell and with a lor space inside. However, as this KZbinr says, do not buy the Madcatz since it is exactly the same control and just because it is Madcatz it is much more expensive. Im happy with this stick so far.

Good video. Gotta share my story though, this is wild. I have a Nintendo Switch, and this thing is supposed to work natively. NOTHING in the instructions, or the MC website, mention the Switch even fuckin once, but says NSW is supported on Amazon. So I tried for HOURS to sync this thing, even bought a NS pro controller and tried following the XB/PS4 instructions, different sync modes with that press-and-hold horseshit, different power-on-plug-in combinations. Nothing, wouldn’t recognize at all. Then, about halfway through some random rambling YT video abt this controller, the guy casually mentions “Oh yeah, if you want to sync this to your switch: 1. Make sure you Power off your Switch first 2. THEN plug the controller into dock USB port 3. Hold the A and X buttons on the EGO 4. THEN Power on the Switch 5. Keep holding A and X for at least 2 seconds once your Switch comes up 6. Then your controller should be recognized And that worked. I mean WHAT in the LIVING FUCK is that, and WHY in the CHRIST would that not be in the fucking instructions, or really ANYWHERE on the internet. I mean that’s some serious Alice In Wonderland shit. I mean what did the company expect me to do, just randomly fucking TRY SHIT until I million-monkey-typewritered into the correct button-press sequence? Unbelievable. Edit: Oh, and idk if this is normal for console fighting games, or maybe just NSW, but the fuckin thing feels laggy as hell. I’ve only played SF2 at the arcade, but compared to that, the input lag is palpable, and the square “track” of the joystick is AIDS to me.

in my country the Mad Catz EGO is literally the only arcade stick available from local suppliers at the equivalent of 117 USD with free shipping. I might have snagged one of these if I hadn't already spent a fair bit of money importing a Mayflash F300 Elite. I'm happy with the F300 though. Used it in many online tournaments. Ok, maybe it is not as easy to open as other brands/models. And only for console players, you need to plug-in an official controller. But it has Senwa parts and it is as heavy as it is needed for table players or people that can actually feel confortable with that. It is also easy to add your own skin. I wouldn't say "Do not buy the Mad Catz EGO Stick". In my opinion I would just say that for a stick that has to be plugged into a console's controller to be "compatible", it is overpriced. But I don't think it is a bad stik. Just overpriced for being a mere clone that, as you said (and I completely agree), is using Mad Catz branding to make you feel it is the best one in market. Unfortunately in my country it is difficult to buy Qanba or Razer sticks, also you need patience to buy parts like the Brook's Universal Fighting Board, as they will take lots of shipping take time. This is quite a good option in these situations. But I understand you, for the price, it is really upsetting for console gaming. I hope I did understand correctly your review.

As long as it's working I don't see why this isn´t a good choice for an average gamer who has at least two of the three gaming systems. A mayflash needs to be modded and the other arcade sticks you mentioned are usually over 200 usd the one with Sanwa parts, plus you need an extra pcb board so it will most likely cost at around 100 usd or more then the Ego/Gamesir to get them to the same sales group. That struggle you had could happen even with a dual shock so it seems you´re missing the point with this stick unless they really are breaking apart/faulty which I can't find in this review.

So I had the Dragon Slay and tried to change the Face plate, checked the buttons (indeed Sanwa Denshi parts) and what I saw there was leaving me speechless. I know some of these Quick Connector Cramps can be tough to change but I had proper connection pliers for fine electrics and they had been a struggle. Mine where completely dented (not like they usually are down the center but horizontally, huge indents like someone tried to rip this out with a wire cutter) and one of the quick connects wasn't dented at all but looked like it was soldered on for some reason. (It wasn't solder, at least it didn't melt on my heating mat but looked like what you'd get if you did that). Needless to say, that one broke my Sanwa button while trying to remove it. Insta return and now I bought a Hori Fighting Edge, maybe that one fairs better, given my extremely limited choice of Pads I can buy off off my amazon.

Sanwa is ridiculously overrated. A short throw Sanwa stick is a great choice... On paper... For MANY, FIGHTING games. But, in practice, for ALL fighting games, not to mention platformers and shooters, a Seimitsu, Crown or IL (if it's your thing) solution feels infinitely better. They just have the highest market share because a few high profile machines use the parts, they've been around a while, and that name recognition alone sells people because it means "hey, it's not cheap Hori or Unbranded crap!"

I didn't find this review until after I ordered this fight stick and man do I wish I would have found it before. Thank goodness for Amazons good return policy. I tried syncing it with a PS4 controller at least a hundred times, and it only worked twice and only in the PS menu screen which it unsync'd after selecting a game both times. Firmware updates didn't work either. If you are only going to use it for PC and you find it for really cheap then I may say it's okay but only for like $60 or cheaper. You would be better off getting a Mayflash or something. Before I sent it back I took the thing apart to see how well it could be modded and if I could stick a Brook board in it, and it surprisingly has room for it, but the problem seems like it would be trying to get the top buttons (turbo, options, etc.) to work with the Brook setup. I haven't seen anyone try to mod one on KZbin, but hopefully someone will because the case is quite nice and large.

That's just pathetic. For a 150$+ to require a gamepad to be plugged in is laughable, especially from a company that made quality fightsticks in the past. Most people don't even need the "compatibility" aspect- a PS3/4 TE2 works on Steam no problem; all X360 sticks work on Windows without any emulator. Just buy an old MC stick for a fraction of the price of an Atrox/Panthera.

This stick doesn't interest me anyways, Madcatz branded or not. On top of that, I'm more familiar with Madcatz being synonymous with crappy prephreals. Madcatz was stinking it up when the Dreamcast was around. I made the mistake of buying a 6 button Dreamcast controller, and one of their craptastic rumble motors. Ever since then I avoided Madcatz like the plague. It was always odd that Madcatz was highly regarded for fightstick. But it's kind of funny that they couldn't capitalize on that success and keep the company afloat. This new Madcatz is back to less than trustworthy and to be avoided.

Hey, I agree with you that at $180 that is too expensive. I can get one of those in my country for 110€ ($120?) shipped (Amazon has them). Would that be a good deal? Also, for the same price I can get Mayflash F500 with Sanwa parts (it's the Elite variation). The F500 has a little dongle (Magic Boots) you can plug instead of the PS4 controller. I found a used one under $10. What would you think of that setup for my first stick? I really like the all-metal case of the Mayflash although the color is still ugly AF.

I think the Panthera Evo is the best thing you could get, it's not much more than others but the quality is far superior. That was my first stick about six months ago and I absolutely love it.

The mayflash sticks are nice because of the fact they're moddable. but that'll cost more money to do. If you are in the budget of 100-180 USD then look into the Qanba Crystal, Hori RAP's like the HORI Real Arcade Pro N Hayabusa are generally like 160 ish. If you are thinking of saving up just a bit more then I would suggest either a Qanba Obsidian, Pearl, or the Razer Panthera.

For $180 and having to deal with that? No thanks, I rather get the MayFlash F500 which basically is this, but better because is the same but cheaper, a lot cheaper, is a slight upgrade from the F300 for a more "aesthetical" thing like adding art, hell, there is now the "Premium" one with Sanwa parts. For $180, I made MY OWN stick, and with a couple of things and more money, I ended up adding a Brook UFB and I don't have to deal with that method of connecting controllers, buying a PS2 adapters lets me use my PS2 again even. This thing is not worth, especially with that dodgy marketing and way to trying to sell something cheaply made, but, what else could you expect from China... lol

Legacy controllers are controllers that were made for previous gen systems (like ps3 and 360). Some games let you use them by building in a "legacy mode" in the game. Not all games have that feature however

Last I heard he went over to work for Victrix and their line of arcade sticks. As for this video and the subject matter, it caught me by surprise. I was starting to think these Madcatz "sticks" weren't being produced due to backlash, so it's interesting they're still peddling these knockoffs. Sad to see.

Razer has some good options with the Panthera/Atrox and Qanba is good with the Obsidian (or dragon if you're looking to spend for a premium stick). I personally use the Victrix Pro FX and its amazing with the features it has included (detatchable sanwa stick, easy modding capabilities, aircraft aluminum, supposedly the quickest legal response time etc.) I hope this helps!
