In addition, he holds the record for the most songs by a solo artist to hit number one on the Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, with seven. Mellencamp has been nominated for 13 Grammy Awards, winning one. He has sold over 60 million albums worldwide, with 30 million in the US."

Kenny Aronoff on Drums... NO one does it better! He is a legendary Drummer!
@samuelgraham1465
@samuelgraham1465 12 күн бұрын
For anyone who doesn’t know, the drummer on this song is Kenny Aronoff and if you listen to the drum fills closely you can hear the hi hat still being played during the fills. This is because John Cougar wanted Kenny to change up the beat he was playing, so Kenny played the whole song open handed (left hand on Hi Hat and not his right hand like normal) and he also kept his left hand on the hi hat for the fills. Anyways still a great song!

The musicianship of his fellow players and the production value on many of his songs is top tier. I've been banging the drum to get you young squires to give John a listen for a while. Interestingly, his first charted success came in 1978, with "I Need a Lover" in Australia, where it charted it's highest at No.5. This was his first chart success anywhere in the world. It came as a result of being pushed heavily by Australian rock guru Ian "Molly" Meldrum, on his national weekly music programme, "Countdown", which was watched religiously by pretty much everyone aged under 25 here in Australia. That made his American label sit up and take notice and after that it was upwards and onwards for him. He has always remained a hugely popular act down under.

This is a great song, I'm glad to see you guys get to this one. I always took the meaning lyrics as here's a guy who was most likely in a long-term relationship that recently ended because it just simply fizzled out, which often happens, because the excitement they had at the beginning was no longer there at the end which caused them to split. And people just simply change over time as well. And here comes a girl, who's clearly a little younger than him, that reignites those feelings he had when he was younger. Those feelings of excitement that you get at the beginning of a relationship when you're getting to know that person and all the fun you have in the process. Sometimes people get stuck in rut of the same old things everyday and they forget to live. That's what I've always took away from the lyrics.

Songs backstory: “I literally dreamt up that song in the shower in my house in Bloomington,” Mellencamp wrote in the liner notes of The Best That I Could Do (1978-1988). “I was still dripping wet when I got dressed, walked out of my bedroom, and said to my old songwriting friend George Green, ‘Hey! I just thought of a great chorus.’” With the spark lit, the two immediately pounced on the idea. “We thought of it as like a Shel Silverstein thing-it was really just a joke,” Mellencamp said in the same 1982 interview with The L.A. Herald-Examiner that the opening quote from this article came from. he explained that he and Green “exchanged lines back and forth between each other, and laughed about it at the time. Then I went and picked up the guitar, and within seconds, I had those chords.”

When John Mellencamp first got started, the label made him use the name "John Cougar" because they felt his real name wouldn't sell many records. When he became successful, he phased the name out. I highly recommend you listen to ""I Need a Lover". Pat Benatar had a pretty sizable hit with it, but the 5 minute intrumental intro before John starts singing is crazy. Then John just knocks it out of the park.

Hurt So Good came out before Jack and Diane, and I tend to prefer it. My favorite one by him though is Cherry Bomb, which is slower and more of a ballad. He added his last name Mellencamp later in his career.

As a drummer I find it odd when people react to the lyrics more than the music. The drummer, Kenny Aronoff, said in an interview that while rehearsing this song with Mellencamp he decided on a whim to ride the hi hat with his left (weaker) hand rather than his right. The sound had a sloppy, slightly out-of-control sound that John liked, so they kept it and that's what we're hearing. To me, that is far more interesting than anything the song is about.
